For those of you who are residing in the US, I am pretty sure that you've caught wind of that certain Kentucky case: Like the title of this thread states, county clerk Kim Davis was put into prison after having refused to issue two same-sex people their marriage licenses (and two straight couples, too, for reasons I am unaware of) as this act strongly goes against her Christian beliefs. After five days of imprisonment, Kim Davis was released. She intends to continue her job despite repeated warnings that she is violating a court order.

This instance is pretty much a result of the fairly recent Supreme Court decision in the Obergefell v.Hodges case, in which the court declared marriage b/w same-sex people to be constitutional.

The clerk seems to not understand that she is an elected government official and civil servant. This means that personal views and beliefs must be kept to yourself. Her position as county clerk means she has responsibilities to provide an unbiased service to all citizens in that county. She is required to perform her duties in this manner by law, reinforced by the country's constitution.

No one's telling her she can't believe the way she believes, that is her fundamental right under our constitution. However she cannot impose her beliefs on others through her office. That would be infringing on the personal civil rights of others. Basically she can openly state her stance on same-sex marriage, but she can't force her stance on same-sex marriage on others.

Exactly my thoughts. We have a similar situation in my country where some doctors refuse abortions or tubal ligation even when there are medical reasons for it. It's alright to have beliefs, but that should stay a private matter and not mix with a job you have trained to do.

I know it's a stupid comparison, but imagine a supermarket cashier who won't sell you any meat or dairy product because he's a vegan. He'd probably get fired right on the spot.

And another thing, it is also my opinion that, if your religion prohibits you to get married to a person of the same sex, then don't get married to a person of the same sex! It's as easy as that. You don't need to ban the whole world from doing it.

She should've just gotten fired. There's no reason to jail her, and she's already admitted she'll continue with this in the future. The focus should be on preventing her from being actively homophobic, not locking her up in a futile attempt to teach her a lesson.

Yeah not that I agree with her actions at all but Aren't you fired or removed for this type of professional and civil misconduct rather than jailed? I don't think it's worth jailing someone for doing something like this but also I don't think she deserves to keep her position after that. Either way it wasn't her call

Her "christian belief" should also go to herself seeing how shes been with 4 men and got divorced 3 times.

Seeing how her beliefs are so strong.

Thx for the replies to you all. My polyscience discussion class happened to be addressing this incident, and while watching the video clips I just became infuriated with Davis' behavior.

I pretty much all agree with you that it would have been better to just permanently fire her, but since she is a government official she needs to be impeached by the state legislature in order for that to happen.

Her "christian belief" should also go to herself seeing how shes been with 4 men and got divorced 3 times.

Well, to be fair though, she didn't convert to Christianity, or at least did not become a devout follower, until 2011 or so. All those divorces and getting pregnant with someone else while being married happened a long time before that.

She is wrong, completely

As many here said, her personal opinions shouldn't affect this type of job where she shouldn't make a distinction between clients

She's crazy and anyone who supports her is too. We live in the year 2015, it's unbelieveable that some people are still this bigoted. Of course she has the right to hold these beliefs, but just because she is religious doesn't give her the freedom to take away the rights of other citizens.

As long as she is barred from returning to her job, I don't care what she believes or has to say.

Yeah, same here. I chuckled a bit when I found out about this... It's borderline hypocrisy.

She's an idiot. I will say though, I laughed when they released her and she walked onto a stage to "Eye of the Tiger". Kinda funny for some reason.

A person's right of religion should never be used to interfere with or hinder someone else's civil rights, period. She should resign if she can't do the job she was elected to do because it conflicts with her religious beliefs. Freedom of religion does not mean you should try to force what you believe on anyone else.

I mean I wouldn't either, I don't blame him at all. I wouldn't want to be associated with something like that in any way, shape, or form.
