So, for those who followed Sonic comic books and the news recently.

After over 275 issues and spin-offs, Archie did NOT renew the license with Sega to continue the Sonic the Hedgehog comic franchise due to bunch of legal settlements and also wanted to focus on the Riverdale series earlier this year, leading to the official cancellation around June. But a couple of days after the announcement, another statement came that Sonic will be returning to the comics next April, now being published from IDW Publishing!

At NYCC'17 today, we found out that veteran writer, Ian Flynn, will be returning, along with Tyson Heese, who drew the successful (but suddenly cancelled by Archie despite sales) Sonic: Megadrive series and the animation for Sonic Mania's opening.

Here's the Q&A:

So sad I have many of the old comics as well I just hope that we don't lose a tone of characters that we have all come to know a love from the comic, but I also fear that is what may happen.

One thing I found out is that Sega will be less restricting with IDW than what they were doing with Archie. Archie was a mess (ex-writers suing and claiming characters based of a video game, which doesn't even make sense and then the company lost the paperwork because of an fire accident many years ago and then one of the ex-writer want to sue Sega because of a game that was inspired from but none of "his" characters were used...) I know Sega was getting tiresome of the mess. This is the better option. Yes we lost tons of characters, some good, rest was not even needed (parents of major characters, all of those echidnas, etc.) but I'm glad that Sega does care that comic book publishers care for Sonic since he was around for many years, outranking other video game comics like Street Fighter and Mario.

So had to google who Penders was, and boy did he try to royally screw over the Sonic Multiverse. I expect Archies will be making sure contracts are not misplplaced in the future.

After reading that, I can't blame Archies to cut it's losses, and for SEGA to start a fresh with IDW.

Wouldn't the writer;s contract specify who owned the characters? Do you usually have to vomit up that copyright when working for a corporate entity? it's not legally required, but I figured it's be a non-negotiable term for them for reasons like this.

I heard that they are wanting to do a joint project with Kishimoto.

Ok....I made that last part up.

When it came to it (at the time when the ex-writers/workers were doing the comics), they stated that ALL characters were owned by SEGA. Archie was the ones negotiated the contracts (since they were contracts-for-hire workers). However, all of this started because of the reprints and Archie wasn't giving out royalties after those workers left/quit. And then we got into the legal messes right after Sonic Chronicles came out for the Nintendo DS.

... and please, Nate, that is a horrible joke you did there.
