Poll: Kishimoto Bad At Developing Female Characters? (99 member(s) have cast votes)

Ever since the start of Naruto Kishimoto hasn't been that kind to female characters, especially Sakura. Even now as Sakura has shown amazing development as a ninja not since the Save Gaara arc has she really done anything. Is Kishimoto unfair to women in his manga?

I dont know about that. Shes actually been very forceful, to the point of calling Sasuke weak when the deidara fight was over. and insisting that they fight itachi together. Shes even objected to madaras plan and to their going after the Kages.

Im not certain she could have been any more forceful without using actual force.

Considering how single minded and obstinate Sasuke is, I think physical force might very well be necessary. wink.gif (Even Naruto thinks so. Heh)

Now here i do disagree on a couple of points. for one the implications are pretty clear given the development weve seen that she is not and never was following Orochimaru at all. In point fo fact the implications seem to support that the one she came to the Sound with Orochimaru for was Sasuke.

No, Suigetsu asks Sasuke (while he and Sasuke are on the way to the hideout Karin was a prison guard at) why he wants Karin, that unlike the two of them, Karin was a loyal follower of Orochimaru. She didn't meet Sasuke until some time after she had been with Orochimaru. Now joining the Akatsuki definitely wasn't on her agenda and it was definitely only because of Sasuke that she did.

but so far we havent seen much beyond that. this leaves the door open for sakura to do exactly as you say and open her up to saving Sasuke from the darkness that even she is beginning to sense.

Yeah, even after being with Orochimaru for some years this is too dark and disturbing for her, but unlike Sakura or Naruto she knows and has worked in some level of darkness, so she can relate to Sasuke better than Naruto or Sakura can on that point.

Yes very much so. I agree with this statement whole heartedly and think we will see variations of this. including I now am want to believe a talk between Shikamau and Naruto along those same lines.

I'm hoping that will happen- ala his showing Kurenai to Naruto. Shikamaru does seem to like and respect Sakura as a friend now- he's really grown up since part 1 with his attitude towards females. I think he would understand her motivations for the tactic she used to try to get Naruto to let go of his painful obsession about the POAL and Sasuke, even if he'd probably comment that "only a woman" would chose that method- reveal her true feelings for Naruto and use an emotional approach to try to get Naruto to let go his obsessive bond to Sasuke.

Im beginnig to think it may be a team efort here to bring him back from the brink. Naruto understanding his pain is one part, Sakura clearing up her feelings for him is another, and Sakura reminding Sasuke of the bond they ((team 7 )) shared is another.

Lastly Karin is going to be crucial. Shes going to have to remind him of his goals, remind him of who he is. shes going to have to be that centering mechanism. kind of like a planet that a rogue moon is orbiting and keeping that moon from flying out into space and getting lost.

good metaphor and I agree it could very well play out that way. I think Kakashi might play a role too.

yes it was. but we must not dismiss the influence the effect the men in her life have had on her as well. It was not Ino and Tsunade who she thought of when thinking of getting stronger. it was Naruto and Sasuke. and when she silently renewed that promise again during part 2 it was naruto and sasuke she thought of again.

while Tunade and Ino had wonderful influences on her yes. It was Naruto though who had arguably the most influence on her. pushing her to want to do better.

I was thinking in terms of the practical work part of it. Naruto was the spark, yes, but Ino and Tsunade were the ones who taught her how to follow through on getting stronger and centering herself- Tsunade especially, but Ino helped Sakura build the groundwork that allowed Naruto to spark her desire to become stronger. This kind of support system that exists amongst women in real life isn't really seen at all in shonen manga. Takahashi is one of the few that even hints at it (in Inuyasha in particular) and Takahashi is a woman. The main girl being inspired to get stronger by one of the main male characters isn't that unusual in shonen (or shoujo for that matter) but emphasizing the other is unusual in shonen, especially when it's played out realistically and not in a sexually suggestive way.

the implications in question actually are that Sasuke was there when Kabuto and Orochimaru found her. Loyalty to orochimaru in ways would have been a survival mechanism more then anything after all how many disloyal servants did Orochimaru have.

Untill Sasuke came along. the implciation makes more sense when you think that I cant see Karin willingly going with Orochimaru a man who would probaly with her ability creep her out completely

howeevr if we conclude that Sasuke was with them at that time for whatever reason. THEN I could easilly see her trusting Sasuke,a dn with that shared pain begins the bond that would lead him to say what he said to Suigetsu in return.

that being that hed allways planned on recrutiing her. which means he recognized her abilites even then. also the implication is that he helped train her in being a Ninja as well. thus further cementing the bond.

this makes sense when we take into account the trust Sasuke shows her on multiple occasions.

you are however totaly correct when you say she only joined Akatsuki becuase of Sasuke. Shed stuck with him so far I didnt see her leaving him then.

very much true and as I said it is ebcause of that and their shared pain that will make her a much bigger part than many think she will play.

In a twist of irony Shikamaru was very much in part 1 a mysoginist after a fashion in his attitudes towards women espeically troubelsome women suchg as Ino and Sakura. but as you say he has grown up thanks to his talk with Shikaku and his encounters with Temari.

Interestignly Poor Kurneai wa ssomeone I had not considered in my thought processes. She pretty well vanished with the rasenshuriken arc, and only reapeared once for Shikamaru to use to motivate Naruto.

she may very well reapaear briefly with the baby and may very well have her own opinion to give to naruto on the subject as well.

true enough though i would still posit Naruto also had a positive effect in that regard as he and Sakura both share that same hard work ethic.

Even if its true that Kishi isn't good at developing female characters I think he has done a good job developing Sakura's character. She has gone from a selfish annoying childish fan girl to a mature independent skillful medic ninja who is destine to surpass her teacher some day. Also her behavior around Naruto how it change little by little throughout part 1 from disliking him to gain a lot of confidence and faith in him considering him a true friend who will go to great lengths just to help his friends. And now her character development is reaching her turning point if she meets up with Sasuke again until it reaches its climax we have to wait and see for future manga chapters.

But until then.
