Naruto--No.

Sakura--Yes.

Naruto: As cringe worthy as the Last was about his feelings for Sakura, Naruto's character was already a mess by then. His worst moment as a character was gloss over Obito's numerous crimes. As much as I hate the Gedo Mazo, at least Naruto struggle with letting Pain live. It took the matter seriously (even though it bailed him out). However, after that Naruto became a person who saved and redemeed people and that's just what he did. He held no on accountable and was willing to glass over some pretty awful stuff rather than have to grapple with any of the counter arguments. It's was one-sided and became a stale, direction-less, self-parody. He could have been with Sakura or Hinata and this elephant would have still been standing in the room. I also have no faith that had they stuck with NS, the current writer;s would have just written the same story line with workaholic Naruto. There is nothing about Hinata or being paired with Hinata that is dependent on any of his behavior. I have no reason to think that the writer's would have done anything different had it been NS and even if they had, it's the reduction of Naruto's ethos to parody that ruined his character long before he got paired with anyone.

Sakura: In Sakura's case, yes it did. This is even true is you overlook the numerous attempts on her life and the fact that she was the one who saved Karin after Sasuke left her for did. I could ignore all that an SS would still have completely ruined her character. To make SS happen the had Sakura subordinate herself to him and repeated, straight, her weakest moment in the manga. Her ineffectiveness in stopping Sasuke (and Naruto nearly getting killed in furtherance of it) were what resolved her to change. When the scene repeats itself in 693, she's reduced to the same feeble, ineffective girl she was in 181. What was the point of her character journey, if this was going to happen? Usually, when you parallel a scene like that, the character overcomes their initial weakness and is able to now stand when they previously fell. But Sakura? Nope. After the Pain arc, she, like Naruto, seemed to lose her role and got sidelined. This was an issue, but nothing compared to rendering her character journey pointless. She wanted to stand with them, but whilted in the face of Sasuke. Again. The quick thinking medic-nin who had saved a dying Naruto was replaced with the same ineffective girl from 191. If Naruto had not been so willing to gloss over Obito's murderous past and decision to start a world war, 693 would be the worst chapter in the series.

I agree with a lot of this. I think a lot had already happened with Naruto's character and the whole NaruHina business was just a microcosm. I've written about it before that what I liked about Naruto was his underdog narrative. I was able to accept him having powerful parents and still keeping him somewhat an underdog who has to have a long climb, but when it was introduced that he was the whole reincarnated thing and blablablah, On top of that, there was the BS with Naruto forgiving Obito. In the whole war arc, I was hoping the man behind the mask wouldn't be Obito because I figured he would get a lame redemption. Sure enough, it happened. I haven't watched Boruto and have no intention to, but from what I've heard Naruto's character has gotten even worse. Once again, I don't think it's really tied to Hinata.

Sakura's character on the other hand was absolutely crashed because of her relationship. I think all of us NaruSaku fans early in the series had plenty of experience in standing up for and defending Sakura. When everyone else kept yelling that she was nothing but a fangirl, we said no, she's a growing character, she's maturing and is becoming a strong woman. Then it was all wiped away, we were proven wrong. The progress was eliminated in the final chapters, Sakura goes googoo eyes over Sasuke and just lets everything he did slide. I don't often like getting into the whole Sakura hits Naruto thing, but I was kind of hoping Sakura would deck Sasuke in the same style for everything he's done. Nope, not only does she instantly forgive the guy, but offers to travel with him.

Many of us also expected Sakura in her older years to be the head medical ninja in the village once all was said and done, surpassing Tsunade, becoming unrivaled. But, the epilogue shows her just cleaning, still clinging to Sasuke even though he's gone, seemingly with no drive.

Naruto -- Dunno

Sakura -- Of course, what else would be done with her character? Good things? Pfft. The girl's got no self-respect, and of course (like the entirety of her canon pairing) it's tried to be shown as a good thing. Blows my mind, honestly, even if it was expected by me for a long, long, long time. And makes me laugh.

The only thing they destroyed was the ending.
