Ok, I just want to make sure on this. I want to use something similar to the "bell test" that Kakashi made Naruto and Sakura go through in order to become ninjas. What's different about my test is that my characters MUST get the bells in order to prove to their mentor or teacher that they can handle the training. I would like to make it to where their teacher ties them to a tree and forces them to watch him eat his lunch, but I'm pretty sure that would be stealing an idea.

Please help!!

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Just because you want to do something similar to Kishis training with Naruto and Sakura doesn't mean your "stealing" his idea. Dont forget this idea has been done plenty of times. One that I think of right away is from the second TMNT movie. Taking bells from a tree without making a sound was one of the tests someone had to pass in order to join the Foot clan. I think that since you are changing things up its fine. Most every idea comes from some where or someone else has a version of it, good luck.

*Sigh* That's a releaf. Thanks! I don't pay attention to any other series, and I've almost dropped Naruto, so I don't really know about anything XD

If you were making monetary gains on his idea then yeah, otherwise, it's cool imo.

Are you a professional?

Besides, you're writing novels or something, that's completely different from a manga. tongue.gif

You're using his characters, setting, etc. You are already using his intellectual property at this point, so I wouldn't sweat over the bell test for that reason. If there is anything to worry about it, it is that it's an adjust that is rather lacking in originality; like you are trying to be different, but not trying all that hard. A distinction without a real difference.

As a reader, I'd have to know more about the characters, context, etc. before deciding whether I like it or now. Why make such a minor change? I know why for your characters, but ask yourself: Is that change really necessary to prove that point or how necessary is it to prove that particular point (as opposed to the one Kakashi sets out to demonstrate)? If it truly accomplishes something that the original test does not then it may be worth it, but again, that's why context will matter.

Alas, copyright law doesn't work like that. It matters a lot less than people think it does.

And when a company DOES try to stop un-approved use of their content, more often than not, it is only because they want to control the public image or reputation of their product/series/character. So it's usually not a money issue to begin with.

For example, I know someone who made a screen print of Smurfs doing...inappropriate things...and when he started selling the prints, they got really popular. Eventually whomever own's the rights to Smurfs sent him a cease and desist notice and when the guy talked to the company, they said it wasn't really a problem that he was making money off the prints, but that they didn't want people to see Smurf's performing these kinds of "inappropriate acts."

ANYWAY...

As for worrying about "stealing" a plot idea. Don't worry about it. Really, just ask yourself if it is really the best way to accomplish what you want to with the scene. If so, awesome.

Okay I just want to make sure about this. I finished writing a book that I'm hoping to publish, and it has naruto influences in it.

1. Book starts Main character finds his parents murdered one night, finds the killer, but he gets away. He notices a sword with wording covered in blood saying "Be lucky I spared you". He severs his ties with his friends in order to get stronger to kill the person who murdered his parents.

2. The world I came up with are sentinels, people who can use techniques to protect The Island they live on. This includes protecting other villages from any possible threats that want to cause havoc. Note: sentinels can only have one element type, and only create techniques based on that elemental type. There are other techniques like energy clone, but a sentinel is only limited to one. They also have a different color aura, like if your in a society then it's blue, if your a medical type then you're aura is green, and a sensory type is orange. That's all they can do.

3. There are also creatures similar to tailed beasts, but there are only 3 and are considered myths. One of them is sealed into the main character of the story I want to tell, however unlike kurama, it likes to help out whenever it feels like it.  He can use it's powers to enhance his fighting skills, but he can't transform into the creature or use any of it's abilities.

4. This is the last thing. There is a society who can use something like the sharingan only they can trap people in illusions, and ehance their fighting skills against threats. That is it does in my story.

Would any of these things be stealing kishimoto's ideas? I just wanna make sure before I go with publishing it.

if its influenced by him then no its not stealing , because Kishimoto has stolen ideas too and changed them around to his own its not stealing if its not entirely the same .
