Highly recommend.
Durarara is also pretty cool.
upcoming anime "Kill La Kill" from Gurren Lagann director Hiroyuki Imaishi and the writer Kazuki Nakajima
Yeah, I really liked Durarara. Neat anime. It's a shame they never made a second season. I heard a lot of kitten goes down in the light novels.

Durarara and Suzumiya Haruhi are 2 anime series that I wished continued with the stories from the light novel.

^ Agreed. I wonder why they never continued those series? They're both pretty popular so it's weird that they didn't milk these series for all they're worth haha.

My favorite manga is REAL by Takehiko Inoue. I just can not imagine a series that would top it in terms of character development AND art AND the general "feels". It's a drama with elements of sports manga - and I hated both genres before I started reading this. So yeah, I highly recommend it.
As for anime, it's Fullmetal Alchemist (the first series from 2003). Very emotional and really thought out, not to mention well animated. The only thing I didn't like was the ending, and by that I mean the end of the movie. I picked up the manga after finishing it and was shocked how much less dramatic it was. I know that it may be too early, but I dropped the comic after the 4th volume, because I was really pissed about the use of Nina Tucker and Hughes. I just couldn't believe how bland their stories were in the manga when compared to the anime... It seemed to me that Bones made a great story out of a good one.
Special mention goes to the Death Note anime. It's a pretty original story for a big Shonen Jump hit, especially with its protagonist, and the animated version added a lot to it imho. The music, the colors, the original dubbing - all very fitting and making it almost impossible to not enjoy the show.

Wow, haven't posted in this thread in three years! O_O
If I were to post now, I would add the anime series Golden Time. An emotionally charged, well paced, heartfelt romcom that will give you the feels. I loved "Golden Time" and now consider it one of my favorites.

I think I posted here a few years ago, but my tastes have changed somewhat since then so I guess I'm doing it again.
Fav manga:
Pandora Hearts -- Always number one for me. Truly a brilliant work that fully deserves to be called a masterpiece. Story, characters, plot, art; everything is virtually perfect.
Chrno Crusade -- Admittedly, it's not perfect, and I can't help feeling it really should have been longer to expand on some of its plot and backstory which have so much potential. But regardless of some shortcomings, I remain incredibly fond of the manga's lead characters who very much drive the story. And they're my tragic OTP.
Akatsuki no Yona -- Yona's character growth is just so well done and really carries the manga forward. Pretty much all the characters are likable, and the story has a balanced mix of action, politics, humor, and a progressively developing romance. (Hak/Yona ftw)
Deadman Wonderland -- God did this one put me through the emotional wringer. It has some really great characters and surprising, well thought out plot twists.
Kekkaishi -- This series was part of my early introduction to anime/manga, and I still hold the manga especially dear.
Fav anime:
Mushishi -- There's nothing I don't love with this series. It's visually breathtaking and the storytelling is masterful. Some may find it boring, but to me it's just relaxing.
Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World -- Kino is, quite possibly, my favorite female lead in any series. She's tough and independent, and never made out to be overly sympathetic (I would hesitate to call her a heroine, because she's very morally neutral) nor is she portrayed as especially feminine -- which for me, being a female who is not particularly feminine, is very refreshing. Story-wise the series, both anime and light novels, is unflinching in its handling of very heavy and at times greatly disturbing topics. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.
Hunter x Hunter -- At one time I was actually hesitant to try this one, and now I can't imagine why. Both the 1999 and 2011 versions are excellent in my opinion and it's one of only a handful of series that I've felt so emotionally invested in.
Ergo Proxy -- This anime is seriously underrated, though I can understand why. It's not something for everyone and it's really weird at some parts. I had to watch it three times to actually 'get it' and it requires patience and the willingness to have your mind challenged. It's deeply psychological and the characters are all very interesting and well-rounded -- even if they are not always likable. The plot is brilliant once you get your head around it, and very multi-layered.
Natsume Yuujinchou -- It's really just a straight-forward, simple premise of a coming-of-age story centered on family and belonging about an orphaned boy who just so happens to have the ability to see spirits. The simplicity is part of it's charm however, because a story does not always have to be complex to be moving.
Special honorable mentions to Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist (first series and Brotherhood), and Steins;Gate.
