#973340 SHOKUGEKI NO SOMA

Posted by harry4e on 28 June 2019 - 03:47 PM

The first chapter in the epilogue might actually be better than the accumulative content of the entire previous arc. The schools moving in the right direction, Erina is behaving like you expect her to behave, Megumi new found confidence is clear for everyone to see, and Souma is doing what I expected him to do years ago.

Maybe this was what the original plan always was, and it was the editors that pushed the new direction that sucked. Next chapter we finally get to get a more detailed look at how Jouchirou met his wife.

Artwork look different though, everyone looked younger and softer(?), not sure what to make of Erina's new hair style though.

New tales game was finally reveal yesterday at MS's conference, I'm liking the new art direction the game is taking, while I will miss the anime look of the previous games, they've been using the same style for over a decade now so a change was due, though I'm not sure I'm happy about them dropping the ia at the end of the name, should be Tales of Arisia.

Hopefully we get more details seen, the characters look like Ludger from xillia 2 and the female lead looks like Laila from Zesteria., hopefully we will find out more during the Tales festival if they are still taking place in mid June.

Only three more chapters to go, even though it does appear to be the end for the manga, (though it could be the end of the arc, they do sometimes pull these kind of stunts.) I can't say I'm all that surprised that it is ending, but at the same time it feels like they left plenty of unfulfilled potential on the table, the grown of pretty much everyone seems half baked, even Souma who despite being the number one seat never felt like he really should be there.

Who knows maybe it will return as a monthly manga or something, oh well let's hope the mangaka takes his time to plan the long term direction of their next manga better  and not just run itself of a cliff like Souma did.

So, remember last chapter where Asahi had that weird shounen spirit guidance from all those cheif he defeated? Well...Souma got his this time from the various servers and mentor he had from working in restaurants telling him to keep going.

I thought that part was acknowledgement from the mangaka that he knows how stupid Asahi's ability is with him gaining the original users skills b stealing their knives.

I liked this weeks chapter, it was probably the best one in the arc so far, though it doesn't take much to be that. It was back to basics. I wonder if this is going to be the final arc, with Asashi it feels like they've painted themselves into a corner, and it will be difficult to continue with any other challenges after this.

So what I got from this weeks chapter, All development from the past two plus years of reading a crappy arc was undone in one chapter, and we are back to the beginning, the mother may have an alternative reason to pushing her daughter in this arc, and Asahi is still lame and somehow manages to make Azami look like a genius level antagonist.

Really stating to regret not dropping this manga a couple of years ago, and now I'm too invested in it to drop it.

When you think the manga could not get any more ridiculous, they somehow manage to surprise you further.

Best chapter in months, mainly because they just skipped all the BS. Hilarious how the previous two chapters made a big deal about the difficulty of this stage, and this chapter just brushed past it like it was round one of a local bake off.

Has the mangaka forgotten his own characters this arc? First we have Momo getting outsmarted, then we have a team with Shouto and Tenya scrape a draw, then we have Bakugou working well in a team, and now we have Deku who we've seen this entire manga analysing everything in his little book, coming up with such a basic strategy that the opponent will easily figure out and counter. They were even told earlier they were at a disadvantage as the opponents knew more about them than the other way around, so would need to up their game.

Have to say I'm kind of disappointed with this arc so far, Team A are coming off as muscle heads with no real plan, where Team B are not only coming out to be the better organised and smarter, also some of their quirks seem more OP than most of Class A.

Anyone else think this weeks chapter all but confirmed that Dabi is indeed Touya? One of the biggest arguments against it was always that Dabi has blue flames that are more intense, so he couldn't be the weaker older brother, but this chapter counters that argument by explaining the situation. Touya is similar to Deku in that sense, both have more strength than their body can handle, and inherited the power from someone who were almost perfect vessels for the power.

Well looks like they've skipped atleast a week, and for some reason we still don't know what has happened to Erina, This a kidnapping for crying out loud, don't just push it aside like it's a minor issue, has Erina been returned? Why is no one panicking regarding the situation? these things need explaining. The kidnapping itself was ridiculous as it was, but the manner in which it's been handled is one of the worst piece of writing I have seen, and I've read Naruto.

And nobody seems to have noticed the headmistress has gone missing, not Souma and co, not even the school personnel including the bodyguards (Assistants?) have noticed. I expect no one will have any idea until we see poor little Hisako being hysterical she can't get in touch with her beloved Erina-Sama, poor girl just doesn't get a break, first gets demotivated after she lost to Hayama, then again when she gets fired as her assistant, then again when she got expelled for losing against the Elite 10, and now if Erina remains missing will be in a worst state ever as she'll blame herself for not being with her at the time.

That is if erina remains missing, because I'm not convinced she will remain like that, as often you see the kidnapped person return and somehow return brainwashed.

So finally gave in to my curiosity and decided to read the manga, have to say it takes a while for it to get going, I would say it wasn't until chapter 71 that I started to change my opinion about it, I didn't like the hothead, he's still someone who I don't get, he's like Sasuke with his jealousy of Naruto's growth, but he lacked any of the charm, or the backstory to justify his reasoning, I also found it amusing why he couldn't understand why All might didn't choose him as a successor when anyone with any sense could get it, even his own mother understood that he was a spoiled kid used to getting his own way. (It also pissed me off how him bullying Deku for years was dealt with, he doesn't feel remorse, instead he doesn't even seem to think he did anything wrong, and even the manga tries to brush it off, to the point that Deku even respects him, really don't like him much.)

Deku  took a while to grow on me, for pretty much the first third or so I was convinced the kid was suffering from depression, and was suicidal, but he grows as a character, hhim not being a idiot is a refreshing change for a Jump battle manga.

I'd say I liked the one character I thought I'd hate the most, and that was Todoraku? (I read the whole manga and the only names that stuck are Defu, and All might, ever other name literally have no clue.) he was pretty much the Sasuke of the manga, but he actually grew up, his faults were not ignored (though that is the same for all charracters, which I find refreshing when it comes to a manga talking about geniuses.) though as the manga progressed he kind of got boring.

The villain group is not in all honesty not that great and if anything I come away thinking the Hero organisation is run by a bunch of idiots that can't solve anything, they need more brains in that organisation, because they their actions seem very predictable and the Villain group manage to easily stay one step ahead of them.

I'm liking the manga right now, the arc to save the girl was well written, and the last battle with flame dad wasn't bad, also I like how the manga takes it's cues from One Piece, in that each chapter has plenty of content andisn't like Naruto and Bleach were at times you could read the entire chapter in a minute.

I know it does seem like I don't like the manga, yeah I don't think it's as good as Naruto in it's hay day, or even Bleach, and doesn't come close to One Piece, but I can see it getting better, though I'm not sure how I feel that the manga has lefts markers in, where if the mangaka decides to go that route, the face hugger and Deku could be related to All mights predecessor, by All might mentioning how Deku's mother reminded him of her, in personality and looks.

We can tell Souma lost this battle just from the stakes. That's one of the major flaws with a manga like this, if the stakes are high the hero cannot lose, but if the stakes are non-existent or of low value, you know out Hero is going to lose.

This manga is just becoming a comedy as each new manga gets released, this week was hilarious, and I'm not sure if it's intentional or not. So I wasn't completely off, Souma reconfirms it is Erina he wants to cook for above everyone else, though he still hasn't realised the true reason for this, he still thinks it's acknowledgement.

The reveal about Saiba's other son was anti-climatic, I thought there might be something more to it, but at least they didn't go down the route of him being a illegitimate child, didn't think that would be the case but you can never be sure.

I'm starting to think this whole thing might be a set-up from Jouchirou to test his son for some unknown reason, maybe he feels that reaching the number one seat will dull his sensors, and he'll get complacent. who knows.

So they went down this route? Out of all the possible outcome, this one was probably the worst they could have taken. You know the manga is hitting an all time low when they make a shocking revelation and your reaction instead of surprise or intrigue is 'Really? This is the old trope they decided to go for.'

This is what happens when you introduce a big boss too early in the series, and your MC is obviously not even close to defeating him, and instead of building them up and delaying the final confrontation you go straight ahead with their confrontation. this is the same problem Bleach suffered with, they went straight from revealing Eizen as a OP boss to a arc where Orihime is kidnapped so Aizen's confrontation could not be delayed any further, and by the end of it, Ichigo had to be OP'd to a point it made no sense and any boss afterwards would pale in comparison.

They've actually gone for the worst route as well because Jouchirou was meant to be the final boss (or second to last, depending on where Erina fell in to the mix) but having Jouchirou defeated now, means that once Souma defeats Asahi, he's surpassed his father by defeating someone who is stronger than him, though it may be that Jouchirou allowed himself to be defeated because he wanted the two kids to meet, and hoped the younger brother could teach the older brother a lessen. It's another popular trope so it wouldn't surprise me

I also wouldn't be surprised one bit if we find Asami making a return as someone who helps Souma and friends after he has a change of heart. Because if you are going unoriginal idea's might as well throw in the old, enemy is now a ally trope in there as well.
