Favorites?

Obviously Sakura Haruno

Kanami Chidori, from the awesome full metal panic series is another funny one.

I think this may be better suited for the Otaku Square section.

Off the top of my head, my favorites would probably be:

  • Sakura Haruno - Naruto
  • Anna Kyoyama - Shaman King
  • Asuka Langley Soryu - Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Kaname Chidori - Full Metal Panic
  • Helga - Hey Arnold (Does that count? XD)

Sakura - Naruto

Maka - Soul Eater

Kallen - Code Geass

Alice - Pandora Hearts

Seems kind of like there might be one I'm forgetting. :headscratch:

I'm not sure about favorite but these two are the first tsundere characters I saw in anime :

Bulma

Chi-Chi

I think these two are the reason why so many shonen battle manga these days have tsundere heroines.

Not even going to bother listing the obvious one, Haruno Sakura (oh, wait, I just did... oops).

Lina Inverse (Slayers)

Akane Tendo (Ranma)

Miyuki (YUA)

Videl (DBZ)

Yuriko Star (Irresponsible Captain Tylor) if she counts; I haven't ever seen her referred to as one by anyone else, but I think she meets much of the definition.

Rare, entirely non-comedic example who meets the definition: San, from Princess Mononoke

Kisara Nanjo, aka Valkyrie (History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi... or however you translate that title)

Chidori Kaname (FMP)

Skuld (Ah Megami-sama)

Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I actually don't like her because she's a tsundere, more so because of her past and, you know...how messed up she is mentally. She was a major b*tch. I'd say maybe even thrice as kitteny as Part 1 Ino and Sakura, Though as kitteny as she was, I actually had the most sympathy for her out of the main cast. By far my favorite character from NGE. Also, she went out in such an undeniably badass way:

I actually didn't like Asuka at all until the end - she went out like a champ no doubt. I do like her more in the Evangelion movie remakes for some reason.

Yeah, Asuka was hard to like, I think technically, though, she made herself that way. My take on it, Asuka had the "Hedgehog's dilemma" the same way Shinji did. However, unlike Shinji who pushed people away by closing up and going in a shell per say, Asuka did it with anger and force. Similar to Shinji, she does it to prevent being hurt.

for me its biri-biri Misaka from Toaru Majutsu no Index. her tsundere-ness is acceptable and cute.

as for Haruno Sakura, she's my favorite and all but sometimes i don't see her as a tsundere.

she's probably more of a type B tsundere nowadays. she's actually pretty nice to everyone even Naruto, as long as

he doesn't act as an idiot or a perv to piss her off.

- Sayaka yumi from Mazinger-Z. She set the standard.

mazinger-z-manga-sayaka-yumi-204063.jpg

- Jun Hono from Great Mazinger. And here went when the trope got darker. She was an orphan with abandonmet issues. People picked on her because she was a half-foreign, half-black girl. Her adoptive brother was a blithering idiot -when he was not an utter jerkass- due to abandonment issues and a lack of self-worth she was well aware of, so often she was torn between  killing him and pitying him (have we said she was in love with him?). Aaaaand her adoptive father treated her like a soldier rather a daughter, not helping her with her troubles. Add to the mix the constant tension and distress of being fighting for her life against ancient monstrosities from below the Earth, and it was not a wonder she suffered mood shifts.

205191.jpg

- Kyoko Otonashi from Maison Ikkoku. The trope under a realistic light. She was an adult, mature woman, who did not get violent but DID get mad because she was surrounded by idiots. Or jerks. Or overprotective and overcontroling parets. Or wimps were abused by jerks. Or crazy people. And nearly nobody got the hint of she was not planning get married again so soon after her husband's death.

kyoko18.gif

- Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road. She came across like harsh and cold at the beginning because she had got a very lonely childhood, but when she warmed up to you, she was the loveliest, most charming, kindest girl you could meet. And how can you not love a girl loves jazz?

1373282172-ayukawamad-o.jpg

- Kaori Makimura from City hunter. She was just so hilarious.

kaori.jpg

- Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2.

akane-corto.jpg

- Lina Inverse from Slayers. One of her sentences DEFINES badassery: "You made two mistakes: you got a lot of people killed to achieve your goals... and you started a fight with ME."

lina2.jpg

- Asuka Langley Soryu from Evangelion. I liked her from the beginning; actually she is one of the few characters I liked from that series.

Kawapaper_NG_Evangelion_0000057_1280x102

- Sakura Haruno from Naruto, obviously.

Sakura-haruno-496541.jpeg

Meh. I never found hard liking her. From the beginning I found her hilarious. And you only had to pay attention to her first appearance to realize her bluster and "arrogance" was only a facade (when she fits her plugsuit before fighting Gaghiel and tries encouraging herself). But yes, it is pretty much like you told: she was afraid of getting close to someone and being hurt again, so she pushed other people away. Her "mean" person was not her real personality but another mask. She showed her real self with Kaji and sometimes with Misato or Hikari because she trusted them to NOT hurting her.

I think she had some slight moments like that with Shinji, too. There's a short scene after she finishes a phone call with relatives in Germany. Right after that she starts talking to Shinji and for a split second she shows who she really is and opens up a bit before pushing him away again.

Oh, definitely. She had got soft moments with Shinji (and often people forgets Asuka wanted to befriend Rei when she met her, only for being coldly brushed off). Although, to be fair, that partially was his blame, too:

- For a brief moment she stops pushing him and opens up to him, allowing herself being vulnerable.

- He misses the hint because he can not believe she is interested in him (among other things because she constantly pushes him away).

 - She mistakes his cluelessness like rejection and a lack of interest, gets angry at herself for opening up, and pushes him away more harshly than before.

And so is like you brew a huge mess.
