It certainly has been a while since I've done one of these, and I think the time has come for me to resume reliving the journey with the Volume 18 highlights:

naruto-3053.jpg

naruto-3054.jpg

naruto-3055.jpg

naruto-3057.jpg

One of the key things of progression in Volume 18 is Naruto's rasengan training atleast when it comes to the second stage of it, and what I really appreciated from it was the flashback in the academdy where Iruka brought up the symbol of the leaf and what it represented. What made it work for me was how it correlated with Naruto's training as he thinks back to it.

naruto-3057.jpg

This one is kinda small, but I also like how Jiraiya recognizes the amount of hardwork Naruto has been putting when it comes to the training at this particular point. Despite wanting moving onto the third stage, Jiraiya insisted on Naruto that they held it off as they were soon about to run into Tsunade.

naruto-3060.jpg

Of course we also get Orochimaru reappear before Tsunade after what took place during his battle with Hiruzen (The Third Hokage), so that his arms may finally be held.  His manipulative tactics definitely made him stand out as a great villain for the series when it came to Tsunade and resurrecting the dead more specifically her younger brother and Dan.

naruto-1566710.jpg

naruto-1566716.jpg

Here we are finally introduced to the third stage of Naruto's rasengan and the meaning behind where Jiraiya's been taking it ever since the knucklehead ninja begun it. The way how it was explained was done well and flowed naturally within the story as far as exposition goes, and with how it belt up the rasengan's introduction into the story had defintely made it one of the biggest moments in the story even for Naruto as a character and his determination.

naruto-3113.jpg

naruto-3114.jpg

What the volume also highlights is the reunion between Jiraiya and Shizune.  It wasn't just like hey what's up how are you doing? all happy go lucky,  it got down to a very serious matter right on the spot as soon as Jiraiya and Naruto are able to spot her. Despite showcasing how determined Tsunade is as a character you can also see how Orochimaru has tested her into a corner when it comes to the decision he's laid out for her, and how that conflicts her with the idea of being Hokage as requested by the village elders.

naruto-3143.jpg

Of course shortly after she badmouths the meaning of Hokage by representing her grandfather and the second hokage for being loosers how died while their dream was established brought an upsetting look on Naruto. That would later cause Tsunade to challenge him to match in order to see how he stands out and ultmately she manages to pull through and succeeds. of course given the character Naruto is he pulls out the rasengan as a surprise to Tsunade who knows that only the 4th and Jiraiya are the ones to know what the rasengan is and the ones to master it.  Which is where we get to a point where Tsunade wagers the ultimate decision between her and Naruto regarding her necklace and the set up that's established for a moment waiting to have  been made.

naruto-3150.jpg

naruto-3151.jpg

Another thing to appreciate from this volume is the peptalk Jiraiya makes to Tsunade about the decision that she's ultimately going to make. It showcases not just what a great master he, but also what a great friend he's trying to be to her given their past history as the legendary sanin and being the same time serving under Hiruzen. What can also be taken out that he knows how far to go when push comes to shove for the village and the decision Tsunade makes will ultimately decide what Jiraiya will make and eliminate her.  It gives his character more spotlight and sign as to what the volume presents itself.

naruto-3158.jpg

naruto-3159.jpg

The significance of the Necklace of Death was a really interesting concept, and did it deliver regarding the history it's had on the people that've worn it. Obviously, given the circumstances that took place with Tsunade's little brother and of course the love of her life Dan showcases why that is to be the case. Now of course one can argue that the outcome of the necklace happens to be just a mere coincidence, and I get that. However, in terms of Tsunade's character and what the volume showcases it works because the significance of the necklace and the death of those she cared about ultimately set her up on a path to becoming a great medical ninja.

naruto-1566755.jpg

naruto-1566756.jpg

Before I forget, Shizune's character is handled greatly in the volume's showcase. It's quite understandable that she's the student of Tsunade, and like her master she isn't necessarily a push over.  When  things like this take place it really makes her character stand out as earlier in the volume you see her thinking that Jiraiya is the only one that can help her, and she comes to Naruto's aid after the amount of training he spent which completely wore him out.  She knows full well what her master's strengths are, and what her weaknesses showcase.  It's important to not that like Jiraiya she wants to do what's best for Tsunade, and despite that she ends up falling unconscious as Tsunade makes her leave.

naruto-1566761.jpg

naruto-1566770.jpg

Finally, the volume comes to a close with Jiraiya reuniting with Naruto and Shizune after being drugged by Tsunade, and tells Shizune to let them know the whole story behind what Orochimaru and Tsunade had before their arrival and ultimately what set her on this course. Shizune ultimately filled them in on the whole story along the way, and they all know the choice that has to be made, and for Jiraiya it's tough since he might have to kill her.  While the final pages showcase Tsunade and Orochimaru meeting with one another once more as she begins to make her decision regarding Orochimaru and ofcourse the ones she cares out.

Side note: I know it's a really long post, but I wanted to include as much as I can that made the volume stand out, and considering it's been a while since I've done these highlights so cut me a bit of slack, not that i'm complaining .

*Sigh* The old days when things could actually be cool, tense, more developed, and so on...and no (present) romance in sight.

It's been a long time since I've been on this thread, and I guess I've been putting off the reread for personal reasons.. Though I am gonna continue the re-read again sometime in May.

My goal with the reread is gonna be completing Part 1 before summer comes to an end..

As far as Part 2 is concerned I think that will be a big challenge for me.. so don't be surprised if I take a break again before jumping into Part 2.

Dude I've been doing since last year going through all 72 volumes and counting all the chapters and number of chapters and how many pages there are and how many pages hinata shows up on, right now I'm on volume 58 so I'm also done with the series. So I'll probably post my findings after I get 72 done. And I saw they did an English dub of the day naruto become hokage but didn't watch it cause I refuse to for now.

Hey everyone it has been a very long time since I've tackled one of these, but having revisit this thread with me re-reading this series during 2015 has really motivated me in picking up from where I left off (as one of my mantras for 2019 new years resolution).

So every Friday & Saturday I will be diving back into the Journey of Reliving The Naruto Series starting Friday March 8th.

Expect about a Volume or 2 each weekend.

Incase anyone needs a reminder of where I last left off, Tsunade is about give Orochimaru his arms again (or that's what it seems).

This is the material that's going to be tackled 5 days:

Oh I can not wait to delve back into this again!

This is another parallel to Sakura trying to kill sasuke in the land of iron(the difference being Sakura had feelings for the person she was trying to kill so she couldn't and forgot poison wouldn't work), she also incapacitated her friends before acting on her own. It's pretty ludicrous that she could be replaced as heroine or even be compared to hinata

The time has finally come everyone for the return of me reliving the journey with the Volume 19 highlights (it's gonna be a long one):

naruto-3216.jpg

naruto-3217.jpg

naruto-3219.jpg

naruto-3221.jpg

naruto-3222.jpg

One of the many prominent things about Volume 19 is Tsunade's decision of healing Orochimaru's severed arms from the invasion of Konoha which resulted in Hiruzen's death. What was also really rememberable about this revisting of the story was just how much of a manipulator Orochimaru was as an antagonist seeming as if he was pushing Tsunade's breaking point of desperation of seeing her two loved ones again Dan and Niwaki. Despite that, she realizes that wishing for such a thing would only make her foolish after reflecting back on the entire matter at hand. Furthermore her recognition in seeing the wills of both Dan and Niwaki being passed down to Naruto in terms of their lifelong ambition to become Hokage before they died.

naruto-3225.jpg

naruto-3227.jpg

naruto-3228.jpg

And then this moment right here when the cuffs are finally loose from both ends of the spectrum in particular with Tsunade who makes a stance of no longer sulking around (wow I just picked up that connection to Sakura) and taking on Orochimaru and Kabuto.

naruto-3238.jpg

naruto-3240.jpg

naruto-3241.jpg

naruto-3244.jpg

Not only are we able to see what Tsunade is capable of doing in a battle for the very first time, but just she's able to stand toe to toe against Orochimaru, and more specifically using her intellect against Kabuto was just truly one of the most satisfying things  to bear witness too.

naruto-3247.jpg

And just when it looks like things are looking bright for both Orochimaru and Kabuto during the battle against Tsunade it is here where we get the arrival of Jiraiya, Naruto, Shizune, and Tonton (lol) just in the nick of time. I almost forgot that Naruto and Kabuto are meeting up again for the first time since they met up in the Chunin Exams, and man things did not sit well for Naruto that's for sure.

naruto-1566779.jpg

naruto-1566782.jpg

naruto-1566783.jpg

naruto-1566796.jpg

Man I remember when this encounter was going down for the first time I was there at the edge of my seat going "Oh god it's about to go down" the revelation of Kabuto not only being a spy to Naruto, but also him finally being able to Orochimaru for the first time given how Sasuke and Sakura were the only ones on his team from Chunin Exams to even bare witness to what he even looked like.

naruto-1566804.jpg

naruto-1566813.jpg

naruto-3269.jpg

Of course I can understand Naruto using Shadow Clones to even the odds in supporting the fight, but Jiraiya warning him about the wastage of cakra he'll only do by doing such a move especially when you have Orochimaru there. Not to mention this scene over here when Jiraiya gets ready for the summoning jutsu, and instead of Gamabunta he gets Gamakichi in his placement because of the poison Shizune had slipped from earlier haha. At the same time, it didn't necessarily work in Naruto's favor either who summoned Gamatatsu instead which was even more funny.

naruto-3274.jpg

This one I actually kind of forgot about, but Shizune was also putting in some efforts for the fight against Orochimaru and Kabuto as well. Yes, I know it was mainly for support though credit should be given where it's deserved, and this is definitely one of them.

naruto-3277.jpg

naruto-3279.jpg

Also  this encounter was definitely one of the most legendary (pun-intended) ones in the series because wow the intensity whether it was the anime or the manga between these two shinobi was something out of this world for certain.  Though, for Tsunade seeing Shizune and Naruto knocked out really did drive back the memory of her fallen brother and lover in that moment.

naruto-3280.jpg

naruto-3281.jpg

naruto-3282.jpg

naruto-3283.jpg

Of course you can't help, but get behind this iconic moment right here when Orochimaru was trash talking about Naruto being worthless for Jiraiya to take as opposed to taking on a genius talent ninja like Sasuke.  That only felt rather when it came to Jiraiya's side of the spectrum, and the important thing about being a shinobi is the will to never give up as we see Naruto standing up to Kabuto punching the headband protecting his forehead.

naruto-3295.jpg

naruto-3297.jpg

naruto-3298.jpg

naruto-3302.jpg

Thus leading us to this epic moment right here where Naruto uses Rasengan for the very first time in combat against an opponent such as Kabuto, and it was certainly another of those moments that just really sticks out. I mean the shear damage alone with that attack can only do so much back then.

naruto-3305.jpg

naruto-3306.jpg

naruto-3310.jpg

naruto-3311.jpg

naruto-3316.jpg

AHHH man this one too holy shi... so many feels coming off from this battle alone is unbelievable especally when you look back in retrospective of the series from the point of the story we're currently reliving in this journey.

naruto-1566776.jpg

naruto-1566777.jpg

naruto-1566792.jpg

Even taking a blow to the chest by Orochimaru, Tsunade returns the favor for what Naruto had done for her because more than anything now she believes he'll be the future hokage of Konoha, and she'll do whatever it takes to protect that village as well no matter what.

naruto-1566798.jpg

As she now takes the reign of becoming the successor after the passing of Hiruzen Sarutobi  claiming her title as The Fifth Hokage against him, but importantly summoning Katsuyu, as Jiriya does finally with Gamabunta, and Orochimaru does with Manda.  The chills man ahh I mean getting sucked into this series with revisting these moments man it's something special even to this day.

naruto-1566802.jpg

naruto-3338.jpg

Looking at this page more closely, it really does foreshadow in a subtle way for what would be coming later on down the road for the series. It's just kind of neat to see this particular page, and think about the one we got in chapter 632 (which we'll get to eventually).

I do believe the overall scale of the battle between Legendary Sanin really needs no words for explaining because it was pretty damn awesome,  and you could argue it continues to do to this very day.

naruto-1961767.jpg

naruto-1961769.jpg

The aftermath of the battle was also a moment that really stuck with me when I was first reading this series for the anticipated reunion that would ensure for the legendary sanin. Even knowing where we got towards the finale, how can just simply ignore this declaration that was made by the central antagonist during this point in the story, and I know I've said it before, but there is a reason why a lot of fans opt for Part 1 over Part 2 and this is why!

naruto-1961773.jpg

naruto-1961779.jpg

naruto-1961781.jpg

naruto-1961783.jpg

Of course after Naruto wakes up from the exhaustion from the fight that was taking place with the three legendary sanin, this particular moment was pretty humorous indeed. In many ways I can actually kinda side with Naruto's view in a more joking manner lol Especially when he unleashes that hot quick temper and firey spirit that even freaks Shizune out, and yet Jiraiya is like oh boy here we go lol.

naruto-1961787.jpg

naruto-1961789.jpg

When it looks like the second battle between Naruto and Tsunade falls under the same conclusion to his belief, but Tsunade ultimately kisses him on he forehead which catches up him off-guard...  I mean who wouldn't when you're standing toe to toe against one of the strongest female characters. Not only that, but the amount of detail that Kishi put into this page was just absolutely beautiful in my opinion, and continues to be one of my favorites too.

naruto-1961791.jpg

Especially when it comes to the vow Tsunade entrusts to Naruto who smiles happily ahh man so deep it just knows when it give it. Part I man there's just no way I can show any resentment towards this like wow it was touching and emotional at that  .

naruto-1961793.jpg

naruto-1961795.jpg

Finally, the volume itself comes to a close with Naruto, Jiraiya, Shizune, and Tonton returning back to The Hidden Leaf Village (man I haven't used that name in forever).  More than anything, this volume also brings a close to the Search for Tsunade Arc which I want to say began back in Volume 16 (midway through at the very least). It had a lot that just tugs at your heartstrings whether its when you read it for the first time, or come back revisiting after so long which after everything's that happened it managed to bring me back in.

Side out: yeah it's a pretty long ass post, but given how long it's been I'm gonna cut myself some slack, and because there was just a lot of things that this volume had to offer for the series at this point, and especially what's coming up next. Oh boy, it's finally gonna bring us to this point within Part 1 especially when a certain knucklehead reunites with his two teammates.

It's incredibly bad to know that Orochimaru is still running around in Boruto after all he did and Naruto allows it. Naruto is a terrible Hokage.

I really really looking forward for the day Sakura stand up and beat Sasuke to hell , the day of her independence , the day she finally freed from him. Just like Tsunade beat Orochimaru , i think for sure that is foreshadow , when Tsunade finally overcome her fear of blood. But i guess i was wrong and that that will never come ...

An out of control man needs a strong woman to control him.
And even a violent woman will become soft and tender to the man she love.

I forgot to mention this a couple posts back, but currently I'm on break from college for the week, and the only thing I got on my end is work.  Which means I'll probably tackle 3 or 4 volumes for just week only which means the highlights will be covered on more days outside of just Friday & Saturday.

Like I said it's only going to be exclusive to this week that I tackle 3 or 4 volumes & on be very frequently throughout the week.

My highlights on Volume 20 will be up either later tonight or sometime tomorrow.

Thanks to my lovely time off from College for the week (SPRING BREAK FOR THE WIN!!) I'm giving you guys the continuation of the Journey with The Volume 20 Highlights (Don't worry I'll be sure there's not a massive overload like the last one lol):

naruto-1961799.jpg

naruto-1961801.jpg

naruto-1961803.jpg

naruto-1961805.jpg

naruto-1961807.jpg

Oh man there was a lot from this volume that are just great even within the first five pages with Tsunade becoming The new Hokage. The comedic banter from Naruto's thoughts on Jiraiya being poisoned was pretty damn funny, and his run in with Shikamaru about Tsunade being the 5th had me laughing quite a bit not gonna lie.

naruto-1961811.jpg

Sikaku makes a pretty good statement about girls keeping the guys, and many of us can relate lol.  If anything I do believe Kishi was really pushing for something here when it comes this part that Shikaku says to Shikamaru during this point in the story.

naruto-1961821.jpg

naruto-1961823.jpg

Which brings us to the point where Sakura and Tsunade meet for the very first time, and it was pretty cool, and ofcourse Naruto coming back with her as Sakura shows a genuine smile at him after showcasing a sulky look about Sasuke's condition.

naruto-1961827.jpg

I'm not sure if this part was in the anime, but it was a neat little moment with Team 8, and man back when Hinata was still decent that hurts. Not gonna lie, but it would've been cool to see her find her hobbies because that would've fleshed out her character in a way.

naruto-1961829.jpg

naruto-1961831.jpg

This was a nice little tender moment between Sasuke and Sakura I will say that in context with everything's  that happened after the whole Itachi incident. I also really liked how Naruto decided to give the two of them so space even though he holds something for Sakura, maturity is one way to put it, and that's even something Tsunade takes notice of with his sensitive aspect as well.

naruto-1566814.jpg

This one was really tough because I remember despite what happened in his fight against Gaara , Rock Lee continued to train then to see this moment here wow does it really drive home the message that he's probably gonna never recover into being a ninja. Even though, him returning to the field was pretty damn cool to see once we get to that moment.

naruto-1566818.jpg

I will say it was great seeing Iruka and Naruto playing catch up throughout the story of Part I, and it really does make me wish we got to see him a lot more during the post-timeskip stuff.

naruto-1566820.jpg

naruto-1566821.jpg

naruto-1566822.jpg

naruto-1566824.jpg

I just love how immediately after a nice moment of Sakura hugging Sasuke earlier, we get this right here. The hate was certainly strong and completely rejuvenated after his little run in with Itachi Uchiha, and not only that, but that jealousy towards Naruto at that. More than anything, this was Sasuke saying I don't give a damn about the apples you cut back off lol!

naruto-3423.jpg

naruto-3424.jpg

naruto-3426.jpg

naruto-3427.jpg

Oh man does it show the second Naruto walks into the room that stare  I mean chills crawling down a spine is one way you could describe it back then? Hell, you could argue it still has that feeling in the sense of Part 1 alone because of what it built towards.

naruto-3429.jpg

naruto-3430.jpg

naruto-3434.jpg

It was nice to seeing Sakura trying to stop a fight between these two from taking place even though it didn't really have much weight in the long run. Though, I will say it was really seeing that little foreshadow Kishi threw in about Naruto leaving a scratch on Sasuke's forehead given what occurs later on in the story of course.

naruto-3441.jpg

naruto-3442.jpg

naruto-1961839.jpg

naruto-1961841.jpg

God damn it man there was so much weight behind the fight between Naruto and Sasuke here even though it was a "sparring match" on the rooftop of all places. Rereading this now I still get that impression here, and more than anything the hand to hand element was there it was very ninja basics compared to the type of battles we get later on in Part II.

naruto-1961849.jpg

naruto-1961851.jpg

naruto-1961853.jpg

naruto-1961855.jpg

Just when Sasuke thinks he has the upper hand on Naruto from what happened with the tank, he takes notice of the damage Naruto did with the other water tanks furthering the jealousy he has for our hyperactive knucklehead ninja. I also really how Kishi kind of subtly calls back to this later in Part II.

naruto-3469.jpg

naruto-3471.jpg

naruto-3472.jpg

naruto-3482.jpg

You know it's also really interesting seeing Kakashi give a talk down to Sasuke about the value of comrades,  and then seeing him having second thoughts about his value for team 7 and his hatred for Itachi, and it's kind of sad with what happened later in the series because Kishi could've better utilize this with Sasuke throughout Part II.  Then we get to the part where the Sound Four finally make their way to Sasuke himself which yeah we know where that's gonna lead.

naruto-3494.jpg

naruto-3495.jpg

Then we see him going ham against each one of them which I'm not gonna lie still holds up to this day, but it still kind of makes me sad seeing where the fight choreography went later on in the series.

naruto-3496.jpg

naruto-3497.jpg

naruto-3498.jpg

naruto-3499.jpg

OH the date!! The NaruSaku date scene in the manga man does that tug at my heartstrings cause I remember watching the anime where it's at IchiRaku Ramen, and then I seeing the manga version I was like oh wow it's at the bench... THE BENCH SCENE from chapter 3 that was pretty damn subtle. What makes this moment pretty amazing is how hearing Naruto's words really makes her happy and blushing at that.

naruto-3512.jpg

Then after taking a beating from the Sound Four, and getting their opinions on what Sasuke should do which is when he remembers what Itachi did where he finally decides to make his stance.

naruto-1566849.jpg

naruto-1566872.jpg

Finally the volume itself comes to a close with Guy ensuring Lee that he should take the surgery because he has that much faith in him surviving the process in being a Ninja again, and it was very touching to understand why he has so much faith in Lee because that was his Ninja way. There was a lot that this volume tackled in terms of the characters for Naruto, Sakura, Shikamaru, Sasuke, and Lee, and so much that leaves you wanting to know more about what's going to happen. After all, this is the only the prelude to what would become known as The Sasuke Retrieval Arc.

* Fun fact  The series had only entered its 4 Year Anniversary when this arc had started so 2003 (Akira Okubo mentioned this), and you could say this was Kishi in his prime days compared to where we were during the last four years of the manga's run.

The time has now come for the Volume 21 highlights (the beginning of The Sasuke Retrieval Arc):

14.jpg

17.jpg

18.jpg

19.jpg

So we're starting off the volume with this huh... Well isn't that just a great feeling.. Sasuke is about to leave the village with the sound four, and who is it that cry's her heart out to stop him initially, but our favorite heroine Sakura Haruno. Ah yes this should be very exciting to see lol Okay in all seriousness, was this moment kind of touching in the sense of Part 1? Yes I will say that, but in terms of the overall narrative it does get referenced quite a lot and ugh... unfortunately paralleled later on in the series. I remember the first time feeling bad for Sakura when this part happened, and part of me still does.. However it's just when you think about the story as a whole it's shame just what level of importance this was for her, when it should've been something else.

18.jpg

The assembly of the Sasuke Retrieval Team man does this really take me back to the time when the arc was just starting off, and more importantly the level of excitement in terms of Part I is still there I will say. If only each of the members of this team realized the outcome that would entail them for the future of the story.

12.jpg

13.jpg

14.jpg

15.jpg

AHHH MAN GOD F**NN DAMN IT  THE FEELS THE DAMN FEELS THEY'RE STILL THERE... Not only that, but the Bench Scene! it makes an appearance here.. Man my heart it sinks hard at just seeing this, and it was beautiful.. How the hell is this suppose to be a red herring Kishi? looking at this from a retrospective now as oppose to just Part I because it was deep, but sighs I think ya'll know the jest. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED??

5.jpg

Thus brings us over to the beginning of Sasuke's incoming cursed mark evolution, and his "death" initiation.

6.jpg

Shizune also gets some spotlight momentarily in this volume which is kind of cool! It is pretty minor in the overall arc, but I just figured it's kind of neat to take notice of even from a retrospective.

6.jpg

10.jpg

16.jpg

10.jpg

Thus the onslaught now begins  between the members of the Sasuke Retreival Team and The Sound Four, and it was really truly something especially when it comes to a certain Akamichi getting ready to engage in toe to toe battle with Jiroubo. It surely is and was a fight that was worth keeping an anticipation for as to what it is Choji was going to do.  Not to mention the flashback fo Choji really makes you feel bad for him in terms of how people viewed him, but it was pretty cool to see how Shikamaru and Choji met.

16.jpg

Finally, the volume itself comes to a close with Chouji dealing what looks like to be the finishing blow to Jiroubo who is honestly in fear with just what it is he can unleash after using the pills. There was quite a number of things that this volume had for the series be it the last moment Sasuke and Sakura have before he knocks her out, and the of course the memorable promise of a lifetime, and the send off for the Sasuke Retrieval team to bring him back from the Sound Four before they can get to Orochimaru. Not to mention, an amazing fight that really showcases why Chouji is no slouch in combat, and boy was it an explosive way to not only begin the arc officially, but also see how the team is working together too.
