#987114 The Great Naruto Discussion Thread

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 25 May 2022 - 11:58 PM

I'm positive of one thing... Boruto's biggest flaw isn't actually the pairings, though excuse me when I say I do think they suck. Nah, it's the fact it's trying to, more or less, tell the same tired story Naruto went through while discarding all the characters we grew to like on Naruto's journey. Boruto and company, just by existing, are exponentially more powerful than Naruto, Sasuke, etc. all because, well, they're the "NEW" generation.

I'd like to compare it to the far more successful for the time but now seen as a meh series due to the series now having a "true" successor, Dragon Ball GT. At least with GT, when it decided to continue the Dragon Ball storyline, it knew exactly who everyone was rooting for and focused on. Goku, while definitely portrayed as a completely different character and also plot devised into de-aging and maybe given way too much focus, was still the main character. Compare that to how the story treats the title character of it's predecessor, Naruto. Dude literally takes all the L's imaginable despite being god of the ninjaverse. Oh and Kaguya, who was already a plot device used to defeat Madara, she was the weakest, uhh Ōtsutsuki?

Seriously, we went from ninja's with the ability to basically do magic... to kittening aliens. And the sales are going down? Who'd a thunk it lol

The thing is they had a solution to this in the story that if they had focused on Boruto may have actually been successful. Focus on Sarada's journey to become Hokage. Naruto's journey was pretty much abandoned and replace for the chase after Sasuke, and then killed by the last. So, this is a story that the audience didn't really see but they know there is interest in. Instead a repeat of the SNS conflict with a bit more build up, but is so blatant that no one cares about it.

I generally dislike comparisons to Dragon Ball because its status allows it to get away with things that other series can't. I haven't read Borotu in sometime, but the parts I did convinced me of the same things. That it was just Naruto's journey rehashed with new characters (and the old ones hanging around).

The GT team likely knew that from the experience Toriyama had in Z. Toriyama initially tried to end it with Frieza, tried to tank it with an out of nowhere pairing in the Cell sage, tried to kill off Goku permanently to pass the torch, tried writing an arc initially centered around Gohan, and still brought Goku back. My understanding is that fan backlash was so bad that they felt compelled to bring Goku back in the Buu Saga. So, by GT they knew it was Goku or bust.

That said, I agree generally. People can and have done successful next gen stuff, but its both hurt and helped by its predecessor. Yeah, you have a built in audience, but that audience is attached to the previous characters. That attachment hangs over your attempts to create new characters. Avatar was very much like that for me. I liked Aang and Co and since they weren't going to be in Korra very much my interest was already low (some unholy fights in the fandom I saw killed off even that mild interest). For me, I'd be watch muching the same show without the characters I liked.

For Naruto it was the same bit with less likeable characters and worse writing, so I stopped.

As for the powers: yeah, that problem lies at the heart of the Shounen story structure and Hero's Journey form it uses. Dragon Ball wisely abandoned any concept of objective power level by the time it got to Cell because it couldn't be done without being ridiculous. For the most part, power is now relative between characters. But shounen uses has the arc of hero getting ass kicked, getting powered up, and defeating villain. Do that enough times and it's hard not to lose control of ever increasing power levels. Kishimoto's early attempt to focus on strategy and tactics was a good idea that I like, but was abandoned (especially in Part 2) and he lost control of their powers. It a shame because the initial fights were interesting because those kinds of ideas just got lip service it started to move toward who could fire off the biggest jutsu.

EDIT: I'm not sure it about them being the new generation per se. If Boruto was facings the same level off stuff 12 year Naruto did, you always have Naruto and Sasuke able to swoop in an take care of it by farting in the enemies general direction. Those two ended stupidly powerful by the end, which meant you needed threats and circumstances sufficient that they couldn't just waltz in and fix everything (or at least leaving the audience wondering why they aren't doing that).

People have a misunderstanding of Toriyama and Dragonball.

Toriyama wanted to end Dragonball at the first arc but was convinced by his editor to continue. He wanted to end it after the Red Ribbon arc, but was convinced by his editor to continue. He wanted to end it with KIng Piccolo, but was convinced to continue by his editor. He wanted to end it once Goku defeated Piccolo Junior, but was convinced to continue. He wanted to end it with the fight with Vegeta, but was convinced to continue. He wanted to end it after Freeza, but was convinced to continue. He wanted to end it after Cell, but was convinced to continue. He wanted to end it after Buu, he did, finally, but the anime staff wanted to continue with GT which he allowed. Then years later, he got embarrassed by the Live movie adaptation of Dragonball to the point he revitalized Dragonball and made Dragonball Super, which he then passed onto a successor.

Toriyama always wanted and planned to end Dragonball on the arc he was on but was convinced by his editors to continue the manga. So, nothing outside the first arc was planned from the start. However, the foundations of the story built by previous arcs worked enough to build the manga we know as Dragonball. Also, his constantly planned ending the just become concluding the arc got him very used to resolving the story. So, when it finally ended most people where fine with it, but also allowed for the story to continue.

Naruto's story was abandoned at the last minute for Hinata so her son could be the true main character of the franchise. No satisfactory conclusion to be built off of.

Oh the power scale in Boruto has been broken from the start. Generic no name villains are S-Rank missing ninja. He is often fighting Kage level threat on his own or with his team tagging along.

On another news, latest Boruto volume sold only 67k for first week (7 full days).

That's about ~6% of what typical Naruto volume sales in the same time span (1st week, full 7 days) prior to vol. 64.

A good proxy to indicate 90% - 95% fans have done mass exodus, moving out of the franchise.

The last two volumes of Boruto sold less than 100k before it's thrown out of the top 50 list. The best part? Kishimoto's name was officially on it, replacing the previous editor. lol. As if slapping Kishimoto's name would solve the declining sales issue. It actually accelerates it.

Hinata and NH have practically killed the series. It's clear that Boruto is as good as dead the moment they moved it to VJUMP. It's basically KTLO (keeping the lights on) from that point onwards.
We're probably going to see sub 20k sales in first week within 3-5 years if this trend continues. It won't get cancelled. It'll just continue to be the sunken cost for the producer.

By being on that offshoot magazine they lost the ability to attract a new young audience besides the anime being on Sunday. But has anyone seen its competition on that day recently. Which means those declining numbers are the diehards. The "not continuing the contract of Kodaichi," really firing him was a clear sign that this manga was a failure to anyone who realize that.

It just shows the one big flaw of Studio Pierrot's Hinata bias-- they couldn't tell a convincing way for Naruto to fall for Hinata legitimately, so they go out of their way to retcon kitten, ruin Naruto’s relationships outside of Hinata, and turn Naruto into the ultimate Scumbag in the process by stupid crap such as he don't understand love in spite of how empathic he is by having made Zabusa, a heartless killer, break into tears!

The problem is that SP refused to allow Hinata to be Naruto's second choice when the story says that what she would be if she ended up with him. If they had done, Sasuke falls in love with Sakura. So, Naruto stepped aside for their happiness and married Hinata instead. They would not have this problem or at least not to this extent.

I'm sure Sarada has the intelligence to get into politics lol but obviously the political aspect would be no fun to watch. Besides rule of thumb is that that the Hokage is supposed to be unparalleled in strength generally since no-one bothers with meetings or negotiations unless it is relevant to the plot, and Sarada is not supposed to overtake Boruto in that department since she is technically his "arm-candy" quote, unquote. That said It'd be cool if she learned something like Kirin, as near impossible as it is.

Not really. What they should do with Sarada and the rest of Neo-Team 7 is the same thing they should have done with Naruto and team 7. Have them go on missions during those missions they discover a problem in the ninja world, have the one who seeks to become Hokage question why the current system is like that and resolve to change it. Do this a few times while eventually building toward some idea of what they are going to do. This impresses the rest of the team to slowly support them.

In Salad's case its go on a mission with three option. One, is to show how one of Naruto's policies has changed the world for the better, feel admirations for Naruto and resolves to become just as good as a Hokage as him. Two, show a current problem that Naruto is working on and Salad resolves to continue his work. Three, a new problem or one that Naruto hasn't addressed which Salad declares she will once she becomes Hokage. All the while Bolt watches her with admiration and gets an increasingly stronger desire to support her.

Also, some arcs aren't them going on missions but spending time in the village learning about how their system works.

Even if the anime is doing something like this for right now. They are doing it for Bolt who doesn't need it instead of Salad who does.

From this panel here I saw on twitter https://twitter.com/...iNKMxk3v4A&s=19

Also I believe chatte said kishimoto isn't writing boruto and that they are just using his original drafts

Ah, you right. I must have glossed over that twice. Thank you. I tend to gloss over conversations in this story some times if they are too long if I understood the gist of them.

Well, that part first. The village is a mercenary ninja village that sell themselves to settle conflicts. No conflicts. No contracts. No money. Naruto should have come up with an answer for this but never did, and even if he didn't this should be something already mentioned and Salad should be pondering that hinting that something she will solve. Funnily enough, I was thinking about that awhile back.

I don't know who is writing it. If its Kishimoto, if it Ikemoto, or someone else is ghostwriting. I tend to say if something from kishimoto if I feel its from him, and the main feeling I get is from him is trying to cut off the pairing conflict by sticking the anime staff's favorite with someone before they start demanding she gets with the main character. Who already has a love interest.

Looked a bit through that twitter. It's funny that the anime actually has to have Naruto act emotional over Kurama dying because the manga can't be asked to make him emote. Also, Boruto has finally failed to hit its reliable 100K it always got in sales.

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 22 May 2022 - 05:37 PM

that actually sounds nice that the writing problems were being addressed... If the plot itself didn't sound so boring

Really, if you want to get into it, the biggest problem of Naruto more then anything else is lack of foundation for the story. Pick anything in Naruto and wonder why things work the way the are story-wise and often you just gotta shrug your shoulders.

Why is so important that Sasuke return to the village? It just is or bonds, brother-bonds, & teamwork.

Why does Naruto want to be Hokage, what makes it so important both to him and the story, and what does Naruto want to do once he is hokage?

How was Naruto raised, who took care of the orphaned infant?

How is the village structured socially, Naruto wants to be the leader of the village so that's kind of important?

Why did Naruto never learn about the Uzumaki clan? Why did no one ever bother to tell him about his own family history till he literally meets his parents' spirit remnants in his seal? Why was he never taught anything about sealing techniques?

How will Naruto end the cycle of hatred?

Naruto because of this lack of foundation is a very simple story; that struggles when it tries to be deep. Which it had to do after the Pein arc when the story was lengthened. It is a its best, when it just goes from one arc to the next with a few nice but empty speeches.

The problem with Boruto is that the story is only setting up the Bond of Bros, nothing else. Everything else was push to the side to the point they might as well not exist. So if you don't care about that bond this story has nothing of interest. You know they aren't going to focus on Salad's desire to become hokage or her working towards it because they don't care about it and if you do it just pisses you off. The anime, I will admit is likely better than the manga in this because the endless filler they to do means that they might focus, expand upon, or establish stuff to fill up their episodes.

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 21 May 2022 - 08:52 PM

Can the eye see the future, just to be clear? Kawaki X Sumire is meh, and Kawaki's plot point REALLY sounds like a recycled Sasuke story except non-Naruto parties are being more proactive in trying to at least nip the problem by the bud but obviously Naruto will show his double standard compassion. Sasuke or any Sasuke like character? He'd fight tooth and nail plus would go through the 7 hells for their pardon versus anyone else he couldn't care less nor puts in NEARLY as much effort in their defense.

...No it didn't say if it could. Only what is happening and even in the past; which was suppose to be the impressive part when Madoc explained it. Then again that was with her left eye, maybe her right eye can...oh god that might be a stupid shock reveal during a fight with her.

A lot of Boruto comes off as repeating Naruto, but trying to fix some of the problems the manga had. The Heroine Sakura was hated and seen as useless? Well Sakura 2.0 is involved in the plot, is the main character's goal, and clearly in love the the MC. No signs of teamwork despite that being a early lesson in the story? Team fights, like every shounen manga has now a days. The SNS chase doesn't work because there is not enough foundation for people to care about a story that goes on for years about bringing him back? Well, all of part one is building up the 'Bond of Bros' Bolt & Nail have. And now what there is a side character the anime staff is obsessed about and wants her to replace the heroine as the love interest? Have her fall in love with the rival instead.

I'm not completely sure that is what happening but from remembering Samurai 8 and his ten chapters of "I'm not changing the love interest," that's the feeling I have is going on. It could also be they are just making a love triangle with the three of them.

Kodaichi when he was around only used her once and that was to establish both she exist to appease the anime staff, and their is a love triangle with her, Bolt, and Salad. Since, Kishi took over she has been having a lot of scene with Nail. Nothing really romantic but when has that ever stopped shippers.

Naruto is obsessed with saving Troubled Ikemen?

Yes, he's the one who concocted that sexist BS(mostly to cover his ass), not the Japanese fanbase.

From what I recall, that's what people (his editor/sp) told him when he questioned about her moving on from Sasuke. So, it didn't originate from him, but the people around him. Though the fact that it somewhat convinced him enough to used it as an excuse does say something.

#986961 Boruto: The NeverEnding Prologue Chapter 69

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 06 May 2022 - 10:16 PM

Indeed, I know you didn't mean that it wasn't that Sarada Mitsuki and Sumire shouldn't have reacted as they did, but that from what the manga showed their bonds weren't given the focus and spotlight to show how close they are are so the feeling you get from their upset  is kind of off set by the lack of showing their friendship, because they were all sidelined for the Naruto X Sasuke 2.0 dynamic with Kawaki

Pretty much. Shounen have these moments to show other characters devotion towards the main character in return for the actions they had done for them. The two most common lets call piccolo and straw hat.

Piccolo (taking the bullet) moments are used to show that a person that was previous aloof to a person actually deeply cared about them due to a moment of kindness. Naruto has two famous moments in chapter one with Iruka, and Sasuke during the fight with Haku. These were to show that people do care about him and he has made friends/bonds; which is important for a kid that was alone and hated his entire life before that.

Straw Hats are statements of belief despite risk of death. Often for them the crew stating their belief that Luffy will be king of the pirates: Usopp vs the mole woman, Zoro & Sanji with Kuma, Jinbe against Big Mom, and recently Nami with the headbutting dinosaur woman.

I would put what they said in the second option despite no risk of life. But again it feels hollow because we haven't focused on their bond with Bolt at all.

#986958 Boruto: The NeverEnding Prologue Chapter 69

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 06 May 2022 - 02:53 PM

Isn't it kind of telling that Sarada and Mitsuki have a more realistic and understandable reaction to Boruto almost getting killed than Naruto does. father of the year we have here but back on topic. It is true, whatever bonds Boruto has with Sarada, Mitsuki and Sumire is TOLD NOT SHOWN, from what I remember for the most part. so while I appreciate them reacting as Boruto's kitten father SHOULD HAVE DONE, it is unwarranted from a story telling stand point. The double standards of Sasuke always fry my brain so no comments there.

The thing is by comparing Nail to Sasuke the manga is saying, "he shouldn't be hated for this."

Agreed. If a friend of mine died or nearly died but survived due to come contrivance. I Thank God they lived, and give the person that nearly killed them a good decking. My problem with his friends isn't they shouldn't be feeling this way, but it feels unearned.

Ultimately, the fact that this is even brought up in the manga should make clear what is going on. Naruto can't handle tough questions like this, both the story and the character run and ignore these tough question because they don't have an answer for them. Hell, one of the best examples of this happened just a few chapters ago, where Naruto told Shikamaru to shut up because he couldn't answer the question of instantly forgiving the person who killed his son despite the beliefs he preaches to everyone says to. What is going to happen is, when Nail turns evil the fact the anyone held a grudge against him for killing Bolt, even if for only a second, is going to be used as a major reason for why he fell.

#986957 The NEW NaruSaku Debate Thread

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 06 May 2022 - 02:11 PM

When Sakura said Naruto's feelings for her were false and he only wanted to win her as a trophy girlfriend over Sasuke and Naruto SAID NOTHING. An absolute insult to their friendship and everything Naruto stands for, FORGET the romance being tarnished, Naruto saw Sakura as a a victory medal and his rivalry with Sasuke was shallow enough that he had to take ONE fan girl away from him to make himself feel superior. DOES THAT SOUND like the compassionate selfless Naruto Uzumaki we've been following for 15 years?

That scene was to destroy any feelings Naruto ever had for Sakura. Because as always they can't stand Hinata being the second choice. However, in order to do that they had to destroy Naruto's character. Since, no one should disagree that Naruto was attracted to Sakura; he says so -internally- in chapter three if nothing else. As well as Naruto constantly self-sacrificing to make Sakura happy; the promise of a life time being the most well known scene of this.

Of course when you say all those scene he didn't have real feeling for her, he was just faking it, and it was always about just being better than Sasuke. Than looking at those scenes and how convincingly he lied makes him come off as a complete sociopath/psychopath as well as the worst scumbag.

SS fans don't mind as it implies that Naruto understood that Sasuke always had feeling toward Sakura.

He wasn't showing showing he was madly in love with Hinata either, until "the last". What's their point? It is a SAD SAD day when these same fans imagine Naruto and Hinata sucking face every 5 seconds, but Naruto wanting to know Sakura a little better is sick and wrong. BTW, WHEN has he tried to get to know Hinata to that sort of detail? True love, my kittening kittens

Again, they want Naruto to only love Hinata to have only ever loved her and no one else. They can't stand him caring about anyone else; with the exception of the children they had together.

As I recall, Hinata didn't either. Again, What's their point? And it is not only that Road to Ninja one-shot by the way, Hinata never hung out with Naruto IN THE MANGA on her days off. if they really want to go there how about they actually show Naruto and Hinata on a date during Naruto's run? tick tock, tick tock. Naruto ghosted Hinata ALL THE TIME and these fans can try prove me wrong if they can. He even ghosts her now when you think about it

"But. But. But. She at least thinks of him and its the thought that counts. Sakura never thinks of him and never cares about him. Only Hinata does."

Hinata spent 16 years barely interacting with him, yet always thinking of him apparently. Yet, she is the closest person to him and the only one with a bond of love. Ignore anyone that interacts with him, and acts especially Sakura since they don't care about him like Hinata does. Virtue Signaling is a thing her fans probably believe in strongly. You never actually have to act on what you believe, just saying it is enough to prove how morally superior you are to everyone else.

#986940 The NEW NaruSaku Debate Thread

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 04 May 2022 - 02:36 PM

The 'Sakura never hanged out with Naruto' came in part from that Road of the Ninja one-shot where Sakura went to the hot-springs on her day off instead of spending time with Naruto. Of course people read that then assume Sakura never hangs out with Naruto, clearly never heard of "Me days." Also, it destroys the Narrative of Naruto if that was the case.

Remember, that the closest thing to a justification of why the story spent TEN YEARS chasing after Sasuke. Is that Team 7 Sasuke and Sakura are the people closest to Naruto, they all have a deep bond with each other that no one else can come close to, and Naruto cares so deeply about this bond that he spent years chasing after Sasuke to restore it. Destroying that means that the story of Naruto is a waste of time. Which is one of the things that helped kill the franchise when they did it.

Shikamaru and Hinata basically spilt Sakura's old roles the love interest and Naruto's strongest/closest supporter.

#986920 The NEW NaruSaku Debate Thread

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 03 May 2022 - 01:06 PM

he didn't try to kiss her, he wanted to tell her what he thought of her(forehead comment etc), except as himself he couldn't get up close to her. so he transformed into sasuke, whom she wouldn't shoo away. then she tried to kiss him. he froze, not knowing what to do. pointing this out cus some people actually claim assault for this kitten.

besides the most obv thing about all this is kishi saying 1. the last was narusaku's goodbye/them realizing they're not compatible, and 2. he wanted the manga to end and the movie was the studio's idea. so was prolonging the franchise to a sequel.

1+1=2 and narusaku got scrapped.

He didn't plan on kissing her nor did he plan on telling her how he felt. He disguised himself as Sasuke to ask Sakura what she felt about him (Naruto.) So, he can learn, "this is what she thinks of me, this is why she doesn't like me, and this is how I can get her to like me." However, while he was disguised as Sasuke he felt a confidence boost of both anonymity and she wouldn't reject him to give her a compliment; the exact compliment she always wanted to hear and made her fall in love with Sasuke. Then, when she went in for a kiss, he forgot he was disguised, tried to go along with the kiss, but he felt the spoiled milk he drank that morning bringing him back to reality and needed to run to the restroom.

This of course made Sakura think 'Sasuke' was just being shy. Then when she saw Sasuke again she wanted to get back to the kissing. However, Sasuke was on the hunt for Naruto for one to get back at him attacking him, and two to question why he transformed into him. Sakura thinking she was about how she was about to get it on with the making out with him didn't want to talk about Naruto so she bad mouth him to end that. So, they could get back to the kissing. This made Sasuke who already held her in contempt to be outright disgusted by her.

You can't really trust or believe that Kishimoto planned nH all along in-secret because nothing else he has written shown he is capable of keeping a long term of a plan like that hidden in the story.

It's also because they project themselves as Naruto and want it to be that way with NH because it's how THEY want it to because hey just project themselves onto AND dint give a damn about how he really feels, or how realistically their pairing win is simply a runner up that "won" a Pyrrhic victory based on pity.

Boy think they are Naruto. Girls think they are Hinata. What they think is what matters not what others feel or think; that is how they have always lived.

It also further agitates them after the one of the latest episodes had Hinata confirming that Naruto is hardly ever intimate with her and romantic gestures from him are rare.  A far cry from the man who used to shower a certain pink ninja with affection and appreciation whenever possible.

Ah, so they are still doing it likely to make you pity her and hate Naruto; since they rather you hate him than her as well as feel some from of pity for her. Also, again it was what they were given by Kishimoto when he was writing them as a married couple. While they can soften and downplay the negatives they are still stuck with it.

#986912 The NEW NaruSaku Debate Thread

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 02 May 2022 - 01:31 PM

I just realized that H stans are really trying to say Naruto wasn't obsessed with Sakura. The revisionist history...like we all didn't' want this boy turn into another person to try and kiss her. Its eating them up inside to this day that Hinata wasn't Naruto's first love/crush. Like....your girl is married to him now...relax. No need to twist history to fit your ship in your head. wtf

Again, its the same thing as the Last, they don't like Hinata being seen as Naruto's second choice/sliver medal.

In their minds' Hinata is the ideal woman everyone should wish for. The fact that Naruto spent nearly two decades looking at her going, 'meh, not interested,' and instead chasing after Sakura makes them seethe like nothing else can. Not helped by the fact she is the exact type of girl they hate. Even in the manga---hell sometimes even in anime, its clear he only ended up with Hinata due to her liking him and Sakura already being taken; with clear signs that he isn't that attracted to her despite being married for years.

Yet, the manga ended with nH winning. So, they try to convince themselves it was always intended and Naruto always loved Hinata, only loved her, and loved only her because they are obsessed with true absolute devoted love. Where you never love anyone else but them and the children you have together.

#986907 Bail o' Lies Nickname of Boruto's character for the summaries.

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 01 May 2022 - 12:16 AM

One thing that bothers me is that there's a character named Denki Kamanari in this series... the same exact name from My Hero Academia.

Oh and James, good one for Chouchou! Now I need to know who is Penny, LaCienega, Zoey and Sticky (well he's gone from the new Proud Family series).  :hehehe:

Sticky is Nail. Zoey is the Clone. LaCienega is Bolt. Penny is Salad.

Denki Kaminarimon Its almost the same name. My guess is that the Boruto anime staff came up with the generic name for train boy then realize My Hero already had a character with that name. They were too lazy to come up with a new one so they just added "Mon" to it.

#986893 Boruto: The NeverEnding Prologue Chapter 69

Posted by Bail o' Lies on 25 April 2022 - 01:59 PM

"We need some ideas for Boruto. Let's hear them"

One writer: "Let's have Naruto's and Sasuke's kids switch places. Let's have Boruto behave like Sasuke...gives no kittens about anyone, but himself and have everyone fall in love with him. He can also gain all these hax abilities with very little effort. As for Salad, she is going to be like Naruto...obsessed over Boruto for no reason. Probably would go to the ends of the earth for him and also make all of her development a waste of time."

And then someone went. "Wait. She is a girl. She can't be important to the story. Let us put her aside, create a new Sasuke for this manga, and have a repeat of chase after Sasuke story from part two."

if Sasuke is becoming hated then maybe Kishi is finally coming to his senses.

...No. Sasuke is not hated from what I've seen in this manga. Besides Salad, but she doesn't count. This is some, "Woe is me," crap to say that Nail shouldn't be hated just like Sasuke shouldn't.
