As you all know Jump Festa is already here, and we've heard about Kishi's next manga series being sci-fi both after the ending of Naruto along with the sketches we've gotten a while back.  Now we've gotten a couple of new details regarding this very series he's been hyping up for the last 4 years.

First, The title of this series has finally been revealed: Samurai 8

secondly,  Junko read a comment from Kishi saying "The new manga will combine his love for japanese culture, clothing, and "SCI-FI

lastly, the most interesting detail atleast to me is he'll be the one in charge of writing the story,  but the artwork of the series will be done by Akira Okubo.  Wow that's the one part about this I never saw coming which kind of intrigues me (only slightly though).

In most cases it explains why the series is gonna be weekly as opposed to monthly (like  Kishi originally thought). Though it will be interesting to see how well Kishi is able to handle only the story, instead of both story and art this time around.

Akira seems like a mystery at first, but he's been around as an assistant during the early days of Naruto:

Now here is a key visual of the main character:

last, but not least a little trailer video:

...The title is a reference to the Seven Samurai...just plus one...Well that not embarrassingly cheesy at all.

"Judging by the tech seen in Boruto, if they are from his suggestion then, cyborgs...So probably a cyber punk city with cyborg wielding laser swords as the characters with some energy that is similar but no quite chakra." I was right about the cyborg bits. Ninja/Samurai Cyborg in a Japanese themed land with Naruto-like cities with cyberpunk aesthetics instead of feudal.

So, he decided he wants to be the writer of the series instead of the artist. I think its weekly because he has learned what from has happened to Boruto. IE. They told the story so slowly that they bored most of the audience by now, and have essentially wasted 2 and half years. Also, it was suppose to be bi-weekly sci-fi manga. Also his suggestions, as well as watching his successors, and other teams at shounen jump -like Food Wars- probably convinced him that he could make working weekly as a writer work. As for the artist being a former assistant like with Ikemoto? This guy has been working with Kishi for years; so this is probably repaying him with another job or keeping a good artist on staff instead of letting him go somewhere else. If that art is his... he is better at capturing the faces of Naruto then ikemoto; 00:41. The art is a bit more cartoon-y in places.

The new main character overall design is fine, except; I think the tomoe on the forehead is a bit much, and should probably often covered.

So will the main guy and girl develop through out and then she magically marries a guy who tries to kill her at the end? You know there's gonna be some edgy kitten who's exactly like Sasuke and who all the girls swoon over.

Smart move of Kishi. Have Samurai 8 consist only men, avoiding female cast at all cost. Well played.

already decided I'm not giving 2 craps about it. I seem to recall he thought to experiment with samurai before but he felt overshadowed by other giants of the sub genre like Ruroni Kenshin, even though that was not technically about samurai. But still, point is I really don't find his imagination to be all that inspiring because he already showed his "love of japanese culture" with his last series and guess what? The ideas were SUPER asinine at best

We were just discussing this in one of the Boruto threads last night. Didn't expect to hear anything about it the next day. We don't see much in that trailer, but I supposed it might be Battle Angel Alita-esque and a bit of that vibe comes through in the style.

Yeah, you were pretty on point. Now, whether the plot does anything with the genre or if it's just used for visual effect is what I'm curious about. I never pegged Kishimoto as the sort of writer who would revel in cyberpunk style or themes. It could just be a sci-fi Seven Samurais inspired deal, given the name, which wouldn't even be the first time that happened.

Not like the guy can write them for s***, so might as well cut that off at the pass and avoid any potential fandom shipping that grows out of control, I guess.

I honestly expect one or two of them to be a girl just so again he isn't called sexist.

There isn't one now. Most of the ones from that boom have ended. At the moment most of the shounen manga being produced is modern or Medieval European style. Cyber/Scifi story are actually kind of low right now from what I've seen. Also samurai isn't far removed from what he was doing with ninja by the end of Naruto. Also Japanese themed stuff generally is safer in the local Japanese market, and since he got burned by trying to overly appeal to the west; best to avoid them for awhile. Even those robot behind the kid if you showed them to someone who really watched robot/sci fi/future anime will probably be able to tell you where they were inspired from.

So overall this comes of as him playing it incredibly safe.

Speak of the devil and he will appear. Also again he has been talking it up for four years now. Last year he even hugged Boruto as a sorta goodbye. So, it was put up or shut up this year for this manga.

Like I said he was probably testing his sci-fi ideas through his suggestions on Boruto; most of tech was cyborg stuff. I pushed too much with the laser sword instead of just katana fights.

There will probably eventually be a girl in the story either one of the samurai or just a plain love interest. What he really needs to do is make sure there aren't any love triangles.

There will be female characters; just not under pressure since they will remain in the background. No main character status.

You're right, from what I can tell Japan's not doing a lot of sci-fi or Samurai stuff at the moment - those genres seem to come and go with them like waves - so timing-wise he'll be fairly distinct in the market. The only one I can think of off-hand that's going right now is the Kenshin sequel/lost arc, which I thought got derailed by the author getting nailed for kiddie porn, but upon checking seems to have resumed earlier this year. We'll see how it goes, but he doesn't have a lot of competition so it might give him a niche for now.

That crack about the ninja being more like samurai by the end got a chuckle out of me, by the way. They barely ever resembled ninja, but it really did break down the rest of the way in part two.

Or just steer far away from more than one potential love interest, if he decides to include any. I hesitate to call what Naruto had love triangles. It was two main characters with all the chemistry who had tertiary "love interests"; the males secondary love interest he barely acknowledged until the heroine chose the abuser and it was time for some good, proper marrying while the female loved her secondary despite all her seeming growth and he never gave a crap about her until it was time for some marrying amidst some lengthy wanderings. Still one of the most bizarre official pairing resolutions I've ever seen.

Hopefully he focuses on the story, and does it well, but there will eventually be a love interest for one reason or another.

Naruto was also in a safe-ish market at the time from what I recall. Overall his main competitors probably will be dealing with his successors: Black Clover, My Hero Academy, and Boruto. There also the fairy tail's mangaka new space fantasy manga...Eden's Zero. Kenshin their only till the arc is finished. Bleach has its own fans.

He at least tried to keep up a facade till the war arc; after that...

Saying its a "love triangle" is easier then trying to create a chart to figure out what shape that monstrosity of a cluster kitten could be formed into.

I don't know why he didn't just go with samurai to begin with. Ninja were always an odd choice, given that historically they were assassins, spies and all around mercenaries. Not exactly my first thought for a series starring children, especially a light-hearted one. No way was he dealing with the implied themes of child assassins. Big shock it turned into lightly ninja themed DBZ. Going with samurai, he would have at least had decades of propaganda and pop culture depictions of them behind him to make it seem like it fit.

I'd say it was the shape you get when you use one of those "create a spiral" kids toys, where you put the pen tip inside a wheel and just crank it around a few times.

Jokes aside, I get it, it was too much of a mess to use more than simple describers like that, I just took the opportunity to roll my eyes again at the end pairings. That epilogue was so bad with that even J.K. Rowling would have advised a second pass on the script.

No I think having females wouldnt be too bad for the series but he CANT, I repeat, CANT make the same mistakes as Naruto. Dont make the MC with a tragic ,everyone is against him childhood that make fans overtly sorry for the MC. Dont make the love interst, should there be one, a tsundere that is not even in love with him or pining after someone else. If the love interest must be a tsundere, have her fall for the MC early and so her softer and tender side for the MC more. If he wants the females as badass and strong both physically and mentally, dont have them as immature, boy crazy, or submissive to any and all potential abuserseven if they total hotties. Lastly, if he has a couple and puts effort to develop theor romance DO NOT listen to anyone that says other wise and play yes man to them! Have confidence in your writing and write it they way YOU want it.

I dont mind a love interest. My problem was the status. Sakura was classified as main character, main heroine, yet she didnt do squat for majority of the series. When she does, its overly dramatic in romance.

Kishimoto should not write the overall story or characters at ALL. I do not trust him. Instead he should be doing the art while someone whos great at writing should write the plot and characters.

Kishi is very mediocore he tends to write his characters as one note sterotypical cliches that isn't that fleshed out, has horrible morality, has a shallow goal for the main character and made him  selfish and stupid all the time and etc.

I don't know if he learned from his mistakes but he has already proven to be a phony.  :ermm:

Also he has a very weak mindset making this manga a weekly isn't a smart choice ether.

I'm sorry but I seriously think this guy has no clue what a good writing is and that's not coming just from this atrocious ending but way before that. This is the guy who in one of his interviews stated that he likes "playing/trolling" with the reader's mind it was fun for him to see the readers torturing themselves  . Now seriously who in their right mind would think that's a good idea ?! .

That was, sadly, a problem with the series in general. That manga focused way too much on Sasuke, to the point he seemed more like the protagonist during certain periods. Then Naruto himself started getting downright weird about the Sasuke issue and started feeling crushed under the weight of the "bond" theme

Also he has a very weak mindset making this manga a weekly isn't a smart choice ether.

Not a lot of choice, there. At first glance, this seems to be much in line with what he'd done previously, a shönen action series. Which means it's probably going to have a lot of page space used on fights and a lot of meandering, meaning the plot would feel like it was going nowhere fast if it came out monthly. Basically, it would have the problem Boruto sounds like it has. Could you imagine if Naruto came out, with no changes to how it was done, on a monthly basis? How many people, here and elsewhere, who kept up with it in its heyday would have lost interest?

Also you wanna brilliant Sci-fi samurai manga I have one word for you GINTAMA!!!

I've heard positive things about Gin Tama, but I mainly skipped it because it's the same length as Naruto. See also, Bleach and One Piece, the latter of which is even longer with no signs of stopping. I think I just don't do big, epic length manga anymore after everything that happened with Naruto. Once they get past two hundred chapters my brain just starts weighing whether it's worth putting in the time.

Oh trust me its that good!!! You would think its primary a gag manga but its so much more then that, it can make you laugh, cry, happy, sad in just one moment, what so many try to achieve so hard and at long periods of time Hideaki Sorachi  makes it look like it so simple and easy, the action is also one of the best I've seen  . Yeah I know what you mean I'm kind of the same but I got so addicted to this that I catch up to it in no time lol, I suggest if you decide to give this masterpiece a shot to start with the anime that's how I got hooked on it at first and I haven't regret it ever since, the animation is superb an it follows the manga quite well .

You know, giving the anime a couple episodes to see what it's about isn't too crazy an investment. I'll write it down on my list of things to watch and give it a look at some point.

Sure thing I would suggest to start from episode 3 though since the first two are a special to celebrate the series getting animated you can watch them later if you decide to stick with it XD.
