Well there is some obvious bias on that part because while Ochako is a well written and great heroine in my book, the fact remains that the gals still dont get as much focus as the guys overall which is somewhat disappointing, since they are all striving to be heroes. Bleach suffers from the same problem in that there are great females but their focus is often shafted when compared to the men. That is just fact. So even though the females in Bleach and MHA are great, they didnt really break the mold.

And if he really wants to say Sakura is useless I would remind him that Bulma Was mostly eye candy in Dragon Ball with her main contributions being the dragon ball detector and repairing the ship to go to Namek which was not contributed by her alone as her father helped. Im not ragging on Bulma, I'm just wondering what his standard is to call Sakura a useless heroine but Bulma is a great one.

And besides there are other great heroines that I consider for their series in these modern times, not just Ochako. Like Noelle from Black Clover and Nezuko from Demon Hunter.

To be honest, she is an average modern shounen jump heroine. Not saying that she is bad. The person that wrote that article probably hasn't read too many shounen manga. By the looks of it....god I hate that site format...They are mainly bringing up...well mentions once is more accurate Bleach, Naruto, Kenshin, Fairy Tale and Dragonball. While mainly focusing on comparing her to Sakura. With Sakura being used as a negative to show how much better she is in comparison.

 

Gravity Girl always came off to me as the mangaka was someone that read Naruto as a kid liked Sakura but saw her flaws and when they started their own manga they made their Sakura-like character with the improvements they thought of. Bakugo rivalry with Deku seem to be the same for the SNS conflict is another example off the top of my head.

 

I think I mention this before but I'll restate it here. Before the 2000's female main characters in shounen manga were "love interest that sat on the sidelines while they worried about main character-kun, and even if they could fight it was rare if they ever did." This changed around 2000 with mangaka adding female characters that were trained to and would more often get into combat; the forerunners of this change being (among others) Sakura and Rukia. Nami was originally quite bulma-like where she would rarely get into any fights and normally rely on others to fight for her until around alabasta, where she had her first one on one fight afterwards would more frequently get into combat; this being due to changing standards.

 

This writer wants to praise MHA but since they are those pop cultural journalist they want what they like to be progressive as a reason for why it is good. The thing is they are praising a change from twenty years ago and acting like it only happening in MHA right now.

Yeah that's what I mean Ochako is not exactly ground breaking, especially if if you take into account on how often she actually appears in the series. She has potential for more than what she has now if you ask me but there is not heavy focus on her, or just the females in the series in general so again I don't see MHA breaking the mold when it comes to heroines, but only that they represent heroines better. However considering that such writing regarding females and heroines have been going that route for the last 2 decades or so, just like you say, it is nothing special or anything worth "putting on a pedestal" type of praise.

 

P.S. you're right, the creator of MHA draws heavy inspiration from Naruto

A lot of the Class 1 A people could use more focus. Honestly, some of the best stuff is when he isn't focusing on the big ones but focus on the classmates that haven't gotten much focus on yet; like rock boy during the yakuza arc.

 

Sakura was an experiment done by a writer that didn't really have an idea of what he was doing or where he was going, and so she suffered for it. Urakaka is a 2.0 from a person that learned from some of the mistakes of the first, but still has some problem. Maintaining relevancy throughout the story being one of them. She has a huge gap in relevancy in the story. The class sports festival arc was the last time she was constantly relevant throughout the story -because she was one of Deku two best friends along with Engine by that point- where she was had a subplot next to Shoto's story. Then wasn't important again (besides showing her growing feeling for deku) until the 1A v 1 B competition and she was still secondary to copy cat and mind control not even counting Deku gaining a new ability.

 

To be honest, Frog Girl has more focus in the anime because she is popular and Momo in both the anime and the manga for the same reason.

 

The only shounen manga I have seen recently that has "broken the mold" is Quintessential Quintuples for harem manga due to it: not having a main girl that was a clear end-girl from the beginning, having all of them have a equally likely chance to end up with the main character, and not going the marry them all route

Except for Shigaraki's backstory, not much to comment on . I will say that that it is shaping him up to be nice foil to Deku though

btw, I'm not sure if you guys know about this but there was an editor shift in My Hero Academia manga which happened after The Cultural Festival Arc! 

 

Kohei' first editor was around from the beginning fo the series up to the that arc. 

 

Everything after that with Pro Hero Arc and Joint Training Arc to My Villain Academia lol was all under the current editor.

Oh dear lord. Well as long as there was no direct interference, And I hope that most of the ideas came from Horikoshi-sensei himself   I'm pretty sure it is but you never know editors will always slip ideas into the creator's head and the creator might take it up if they are at their wits end

 

 Like some ideas are logically sound for the series but I just wonder too if they were editor suggestions and ,it was made to work somehow

Though, it would also explain the sudden shift to Deku's quirk in the joint training arc.

Well Like I said. I think Ochako is a great heroine, but she DOESN'T break the mold like the video is saying because she is not prominent enough in the series to actually warrant that opinion. She has potential though, It's only that she should get more focus and prominence in the story before that assessment can be stated. I would like to see more of her and the other girls as well since they have so much going for them but they get stuck to the sidelines. Momo in particular has such an amazing quirk but she always gets shafted when the chips are down.

 

Off topic, but anyone here notice how besides Shoto, the other "special recommendation" students got short stuck that don't do the hype surrounding them justice?
