The Mandalay Pictures production studio has licensed the film rights to Shoji Gatoh's Full Metal Panic! high school action comedy light novels. The story centers around a brusque young sergeant named Sousuke Sagara who must protect an assertive high school girl named Chidori Kaname by masquerading (somewhat unsuccessfully) as a high school student himself. Actor Zac Efron (High School Musical, Hairspray, 17 Again) is reportedly discussing the project.

Shikidouji illustrated the original novels, and Retsu Tateo adapted them into manga form (pictured at right). Four television anime series, several spinoff manga, and a video special have since released. ADV Manga released both the first manga series and the Full Metal Panic: Overload! manga spinoff in North America. ADV Films and Funimation have split the North American DVD releases of the different anime series between the two of them.

I could see that, but FMP isn't really something that has popularity on the levels of Dragonball/Cowboy Bebop/Avatar etc; Its known amongst anime fans, but outside of that it isn't well known and the fact that its considered for a Hollywood movie is quite surprising.

Seriously? This is one of the best series I've ever seen, yet it hasn't gotten a third season, the novels have been DISCONTINUED in America, but it DOES get a probably terribly inaccurate Live Action, with an actor COMPLETELY uncharacteristic of the starring role to boot? Really?

The ONLY positive I can see from this is that if its not a COMPLETE failure, maybe translations of the Light Novels will start up again.

I think that is one of the reasons that it was picked. It isn't widely known, so how many people would complain when they make it an epic fail. lol

Hmm, it might be also that they are trying to test the waters with some of the more controversial idea's of the series, or they are going to play up the whole Mithril concept. (an organization that terrorizes terrorist)

I have a theory on how movies based off most games/cartoons/anime/comics are created by Hollywood and how they are created in four easy steps:

Step 1: Take all you know about the series (ex. Dragon Ball, Street Fighter, the Spirit, ect.) drop in bowl make sure all the history gets really mixed up in there because we would hate to have anything be based on anything that happen in the series be in the movie

Step 2: Gather a bunch of crackpot/crappy/cheapest writers, director, and/or cast most of will have never even heard of the series before thay got the job but will tell magazines they are big fans of it and add to mix

Step 3: Mix with big buch of steaming crap

Step 4: Pour in blender and turn on blender


And viola and a big crap smoothie.

Oh no don't get me wrong sometimes something happens and you get a winner like Transformers, Spider-Man, and the Batman movies for examples. But unfortunately it sounds like Fullmetal Panic will be just awful which is sad because I really like the anime. Hopefully Hollywood will perfect the movie recipe so every movie based off a games/cartoons/anime/comics but I wouldn't hold my breath.

The reason I think anime and video games adaptation blows is because that directors aren't really fans.

Why do I think so? because comic book movies had the same deal going for them for lot's of years till only now that we suddnly have directors who actully read the source martial before of even thinking of directing them. the result, movies like Dark knight, incredable hulk and Iron man.

I think what the directors don't understand is that to be true to the source metrial you don't have to copy/paste the entire thing to the big screen, you have to take the core of the series, the things that really matters and put your own uniqe interpretation of the massge that work was trying to deliever.

FMP could work as a movie. but only in 10+ years or so...
