oh good lord.

here's my terrible fanfictions I have going tongue.gif. maybe you guys will enjoy them.

Perfectly Imperfect Love
-An angsty fic; I dunno how good it is, hopefully it gives you guys them naru/saku team 7 triangle feels. it's got some naru/ino in it, as well. (that pairing is fascinating me lately tongue.gif)

Might seem terrible that a mod on a narusaku site is saying this. But could you make this story a naruino instead ?
If it fascinates you, you shouldnt force it to be a narusaku. So far the naruino interactions in the story make me
Want it to remain that pairing..... I really wish it would actually @_@

Love all our other stories too. They're NOT terrible at all. And those i can say i definitely want to remain narusaku smile.gif

Thank you very much for the comments and enthusiasm, you guys. It was such a relief to get that chapter posted, I can't tell you. I've finished the brief write-ups about all my Naruto stories and posted them here on Kanji_no_Sakka@livejournal, if you're interested. I hope to make ongoing updates to that blog, posting trivia about the stories, general information, and status reports.

Thanks! And yes, I know it was a long chapter, just under 10K words. wot.gif I very rarely write chapters that long (I try to keep them under 6,500 as a rule) for several reasons, one of them being that as a reader my eyes glaze over if a chapter is too long. But once in a while a chapter simply needs to be longer. Sometimes they need to be shorter. In this case there was no place to interrupt the flow of the story just to hit some arbitrary word count guideline, so I wrote it as long as it needed to be.

@gonekrazy and candycane-chan.... good to know...good to know.... laugh.gif

I've stressed so much about chapter length, but across the board readers want more. ahem...pardon me.... They want MOAR!!!! lol

I think fanfic must be the only writing genre where readers really do clamber for longer chapters and are willing to sit and read through more, more, more. I don't think I've ever heard anyone demanding for less. But as an author, I really cringe at posting such obscenely long chapters (even though the 'vignettes' are quite small, the total chapter length is always huge). So it's good to hear positive feedback about the length!

Great chapter KnS, really enjoyed it! I love your Naruto. He's really a cute mix of the grown up and the kid. Great job!

Very true, although over the years I've heard many complaints about chapters being too long or excessively wordy. But that's the beauty of fan fiction; it's all about personal taste -- in writing and reading. There's something for everyone.

Thank you so much for saying this. It's a great compliment and I really appreciate it. Back when I was making the decision to write Wilderness, I accepted right off the bat that there was no way I could hope to write Naruto with the same endearingly dopey qualities he possesses in canon. I'm still kind of mystified by how Kishimoto manages to characterize Naruto as such a naïve numbskull in some ways, and yet gives him a steady, insightful maturity in others. I know I can't hope to capture that magical mojo, but I'm trying to simulate it in my own way so your comment means a lot.

I think a good way to write a long-running fanfic series would be to find the right balance between quantity (words) and speed.

Well, naturally that's much easier said than done. Quality stories aren't easy to write and don't write themselves. Most (if not all) fan fiction writers have other responsibilities in life that must take higher priority than writing chapters free of charge for a reading public that for the most part doesn't leave a review. Writers write because they love it, and the minute it becomes a pressure or a chore it loses something.

I'd make this deal in a heartbeat: if anyone reading this can magically cure the chronic health condition that has overshadowed my life for the last eight years -- or wants to pay my salary and medical insurance so I can do nothing but write -- in exchange I would gladly devote myself to updating my stories every week. Piece of cake.

Anyone? Bueller?

I like your rule. laugh.gif I think the sweet spot is around 5,000-7,000 words/chapter.

Edit: I don't think it's the word count that lulls a reader... it's the pace. You can have a one-shot/chapter with over 10,000 words, and make it feel like it you didn't even read such a long chapter/one-shot due to the pace.

It's been a good rule that has served me fairly well. Confining myself to a limited chapter length trains me to carefully consider my plotting and staging, which helps cut out scenes, narrative, and description that is distracting or unnecessary. Cutting down on the purple "it was a dark and stormy night" stuff saves editors a lot of red ink, lol.

More than anything, though, the chapter limit strategy has encouraged me to choose better, stronger words. I'll never forget some of the first writing advice I received from a novel editor friend of mine. She said, "If you use the right words, you don't have to use as many." Not that I want to be a prose bot or anything (and sometimes I fall into that trap), but I'm definitely a "less is more" type.

Voice in the Wind, Ch 32 - Shattered is up.

/\ Lol - definitely not within the 5-7k word range (which I wholeheartedly agree with, btw)! But after 6 months of not updating, I don't want to short-change my readers. (Plus, the whole thing is made up of vignettes of no more than 2k. So, very easy to stop and start. Thus I don't feel so guilty about the retina exhaustion I am inflicting on readers!)

It's my preference for long chapters, versus a flurry of smaller chapters (where the stories have 70-80 chapters). Which is also the nice thing about writing for fanfic, as opposed to any other area: I don't have to worry about reining it in. When I seriously start feel guilty about length, I turn my inner editor off and let it stand. This is for fun, I'm not publishing it, so I don't have to "murder my darlings" as it were. I hate to think how my writing would stand up in a real world situation...so I don't! Hahaha! I'm using fanfic as my writing sandbox. And apparently...I need a lot of sand! hahaha

No but KnS, I always think of the quote "If I had more time I would have written less." So true.

chapter spoiler-ish --Click here to view--
On another note, I'm kind of curious how readers will take this chapter. It's quite dark, I think. The characters are exhibiting some flaws, and the end is bit violent. I just wonder if people will still like it, or if the general consensus will be that they like Naruto as a much kinder/gentler kid. After all, he's going to have to go a little ooc to join Akatsuki and have it be believable, so this is the first step in that journey. It will be interesting to see how people respond....
