We had this writer for the Sonic comics named Ken Penders. During the time, his most notable work was working on the Knuckles comics, expanding his adventures and giving him new characters and stories. However, it wasn't hyped as it was because it was full of family drama, rushed romance, and tons and tons of sci-fi references (Star Trek especially), all of it not in tune with the Sonic stuff. 32 issues later, the spin-off was cancelled and the Knuckles stories were backups for Sonic comics for the time. Because of his stuff with Knuckles, he planned out this "epic future" story. Thing about that was he making Knuckles was holding the spotlight (bad idea because this is Sonic) in terms of defeating Dr. Eggman and everything was all about the echidnas.
A couple of years and issues later around 2003-4, we had gotten the future story as a backup. Sadly, Knuckles was the star along with his daughter, him and Sonic were not buddy-buddy, and it was all about sleepovers, sweet sixteens, unnecessary stuff. And in the main stories, most of his stuff were basically character assassinations, especially for Sally, plus doing a lot of foreshadowing to the point that the plot doesn't go anywhere and was saved for later.
(Back then, the comics wasn't doing well. Many of the stories was filled with soap opera drama, boring and unnecessary plots. Many fans perceived the issues around 50-159, the Dark Ages. Though there were some good ones, but that was from other writers).
Anyway, the story was cut. Around issue 160, he quit. Reason I saved for later. And we gained a new writer, Ian Flynn, who is a fan. Long story short, he fixed up mostly everything that went wrong and brought the lore of the Sonic games to the comics. That made the comic books gain better attention and recognition. Meanwhile, BioWare (the game company) asked Sega to use the Sonic license to create a game called Sonic Chronicles around 2008. Why I mention this game? Get this, the developers were Sonic fans and used the comics and the stories as inspirations but hadn't used the actual characters in the game. They were inspired by Penders' lore and creations (technology obsessed echidnas -The Dark Legion-). Ok that sounds fine and dandy, right?
NOPE! Well, someone on the webs told Penders that the game "ripoff" his works (which they didn't, they were expies). And he started these lawsuits like crazy. He wanted to sue Sega and BioWare, now owned by EA, for "royalties". Meanwhile, he started to copyright stories from the comics, majority of them has titles starring the official Sonic characters like Amy and Shadow. Archie began to sue him but then, BS was going on in the court, resulting of, get this: he now LEGALLY own characters (though his creations but many of them were based on the Sonic characters' designs, especially Sonic and Knuckles) that are from an IP of a parent company. That resulted the comics had to erase the characters was owned by him currently in the story (241-44), one of them I liked was Julie-Su who was Knuckles' girlfriend, but has a terrible backstory. When the Sonic and Megaman crossover stuff was over, the comics had to reboot the series.
Now since Penders owned his creations (why?), he had claim to start this new series starring Knuckles' daughter, Lara-Su. But he keeps going back and forth like crazy, saying it doesn't tie to Sonic yet it will. Majority of talks was that he wants Archie to beg him back to the series, deleting Flynn's stuff, trying to reclaim his word of God bs and wants his future story canon and the true ending for the comics with lots of contradicting BS along the way.
