I think that's a reasonable way of thinking about things, particularly your concession that such a view doesn't guarantee a happy ending. I don't necessarily think your example needs to be romantic love, though. A last thought could be about a parent, or sibling, or lifelong friend. 
 
My problem with the notion of true love or soul mate is that it romanticizes the idea of love and marriage and fails to appreciate the fact that it is a lot of work, communication, and compromise even between two people who are extremely compatible. It also sends the same sorts of negative messages towards people that does Kishi's "women can't change their minds."

This is also a problem in Kishi's work/ending message. Plus the interviews...dear God!

The only possibility how that rival argument would at least make a little sence would be if Sasuke loved Sakura, so Naruto wanted Sakura too. But that was never the case with Sasuke, actually the opposite. This logic can only be applied to Sakura and Ino

I would laugh my ass of. Because if those were IT, Kishimoto woudn't say such stupid things in interview.

That Kishimoto and SP are desperate. I honestly wouldn't be completely shocked if another "universe" was shown where NS happened (and I'm not talking about the Road movie). It would be little more then a money grab though, and an attempt to "make things right" to the fans he lost. It would have to be one hell of a redo and honestly I don't think Kishimoto has the talent to pull it off.

 

SP really doesn't have the talent to do it. From the few filler saga's I've seen, I'm not very impressed by their work.

Yea that's how I see it too, that they caved in and are trying to earn money. I also agree the SP nor Kishimoto has such talents to pull something like that up

The Purge will become a real thing. I don't care, I will forever insult Kishimoney IT or not.

 

If this was an IT, he went way too far, and also why Hinata? Why focus on a secondary character with little relevancy to the plot and to Naruto? If all of this was set up as an IT, Kishi should have used the same set-up as RTN and have it be from Naruto's POV. Remember the whole "You can become Hokage in this dream" deal? He can have everything, hokage, Sasuke, Sakura.. all of it just handed to him without hard work. If it was an IT, the only way to explain it is that it came from Hinata's POV (check her dream LOL), and that's probably the stupidest thing ever, since it still won't explain why the kitten she got promoted to MC level. No reason to focus on her because it adds nothing to the story and to the characters. 

You just answered what I was going to ask

"How would such thing and work and why go through all the trouble in the first place"

How would you guys feel? 

I would ask myself what exactly the purpose was? To turn people away and then rein them in again with the promise of a real ending? What kind of marketing strategy is that? 

 

More than anything I would just see it as damage control and an attempt to win back the fanbase. I must admit that I would at least be intrigued, not so much because of the story but because I would want to see Kishi try to explain how the hell a side character ended up usurping an entire franchise. 

 

And no, I still wouldn't give him any of my money. He would have to win back my support.
