I've been thinking of building a gaming laptop for a while now. Price range would be around $1100-1300.

Any good references or base models?

Off the top of my head, ASUS G50 & G51 series are pretty good; MSI and Sager make a pretty decent series of gaming notebooks; a friend of mine uses a Gateway p-7805u FX (pretty sure the model's right) - not sure if it's the newest model, but he uses it for gaming a lot.

I always look at those guides/questionnaires before buying a new PC/laptop - helps make searching easier:
Things to consider --Click here to view--
What is your budget?

What size notebook would you prefer?

a. Netbook; 10” screen or less
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12” screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

Which games or types of games?

How many hours of battery life do you need?

Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

a. WXGA – 1280x800 or occasionally 1280x768; For people who like big text and icons that are easy to read. Less stuff fits on the screen, which translates into more scrolling.
b. WXGA+ – 1440x900; A modest bump over WXGA. Text and icons are a bit smaller. A little more stuff fits on the screen.
c. WSXGA+ – 1680x1050; The middle ground. Again, text and icons are smaller than WXGA+, and more stuff fits onto the screen. Good for having applications open side by side, like a web browser while playing a video.
d. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Very small text and icons, that can be hard to read. Lots of stuff fits on the screen, which means less scrolling. Good for applications that require a high level of detail like CAD or Photo Editing.

Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?

Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?

How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 500GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

If you're planning on having one made to your specifications through a company, don't use Dell. I've had a horrible time with their laptops and wouldn't recommend them for it.

Honestly, you'd probably be better off just making a full gaming rig instead of trying to do a souped up laptop. If you go the laptop route, it's going to be so bulky and heavy when you're done that it won't be too practical for mobile use anyways. They're not really suited for heavy gaming and gaming laptops tend to lose the portability factor to a large degree anyways.

Just curious, anyone with a newer PS3 model broke it lately? I've had a few friends who'd have to have it fixed. I like to brag at how I have the 'ancient' 60gig model and it still works fine! XD I reckon it's just from mishandling the system like pressing the eject button and holding it to blast air or something.....

Yeah, I've heard that MSI are pretty good for gaming. I've looked into it, but I'm still going to see everything else available. Thanks for the reference sheet, I'll go ahead and fill it out for myself.

Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

college student so yeah.

Which games or types of games?

Dawn of War II, Team Fortess 2, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty, Command and Conquer, lots of online multiplayers.

Around 2-3 hours.

Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Fine either way.

What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc.

Windows, XP or Vista

A or B, I'm using 1280x800 at the moment.

Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?

indifferent.

Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

Nah, as long as it isn't weird.

When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?

Around late August or September.

How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 500GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?

I chose laptop because I'm going to need it for college stuff as well. My current laptop is about two years old, but its not really optimal for gaming. I figured if I'm going to be getting a new computer this year, I should suit it for gaming. However, if getting a PC would be a better decision money-wise, I may forgo that and decide on getting a gaming PC and just update my current laptop with some more RAM and memory.

Thanks for the help guys.

Hey, let's download the Phantasy Star Online demo and kill some penguins.

And buffaloes. And...stuff. I dunno.

The demo has random connection issues. There may be times when you can't access the game for DAYS. Like I haven't been able to for at least a week. sweatdrop.gif

Oh well, at least it's a fun little demo and a way to spend time with friends online. smile.gif It's a pity the full game has a subscription fee which you have to phone a number to cancel.

I'm currently staying at my old friend's house, and he's been training me in SF4! After I'm done with Star Ocean (HUGE game), I plan to go back to playing SF4 regularly.

If you want custom gaming laptops or gaming boxes, check out Alienware. They have always specialized in the gaming genre when it comes to their equipment. They offer many different configs ranging from $1200 to over 2000 on both laptops and desktops. Check out their site and look for yourself. They are always utilizing the latest stuff and even do overclocking and performance mods. My friend has one and its a beast. Anyway, good luck in your search.

Yeah, Alienware and Voodoo have the best stuff for gaming, but they're way out of my budget. I'm not really going to be into hardcore gaming just need something that can run games more appropriately and efficiently then my current laptop. I guess I should look for the right specs in a laptop and compare them to some of the games I want to play (i.e. Call of Duty, Command and Conquer, Dawn of War II, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, The Sim 3, etc;) so they run fluently on my laptop.

Garou : Mark of Wolves came out on XBL. Is it worth 800 MSP? I'm kinda interested but I keep hearing it's rather difficult to play the game.

Actually, Mark of the Wolves is a great fighting game, almost in par with Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. In terms of difficulty, I found it easier than the previous Fatal Fury titles and even some of the KOF titles since I have the rom on my computer, though you only have Terry and other 11 new characters such as Rock, Gato and B. Jenet. I highly recommend it though.

Yeah , I wanted that game because even though it's got the whole different vibe then SF.

...But my brother got Super Street Fighter II HD Remix...

Quite a mouthful there.

Then again it has 33 percent off. So I'll get Garou next time. Thanks De-De.

*puts hand up* happy.gif Unfortunately, I haven't touched my PSP for months. The last game was Wipeout Pulse. There just weren't any recent games I was interested in, but at least Sony's stronger software line-up at this year's E3 should improve things a lot.
