I had no intention of making Sadaharu or Elizabeth regular characters. In the story where Sadaharu made his first appearance, I was originally going to end with his owner coming to get him back and Kagura showing a little emotional growth by agreeing, although still feeling sentimental. But since there weren’t enough pages, I decided to make him their pal to wrap up the story. See, I’m always thinking on the run.

Dear Hideaki Sorachi, how are you? Which character in Gintama, the manga currently serialized in Shonen Jump that you’ve been frantically writing as you travel the seven seas and have spoken of contemptuously, do you love the most? Could it be Kagura? Please tell me!!

To tell you the truth, I really like all of them. I even like the bad guys. It’s true. I couldn’t write manga if I didn’t. So I always want to bring back characters that don’t appear as much. But my preferences run in cycles and I think things like “He/She’s annoying lately” or “You look good. Did you get a haircut?" It’s just like the real world. The character I especially like now is Oryo. I don’t know why. I liked Hasegawa for a while, but I had him appear too often, so I don’t even want to see his face now. But then, maybe I shouldn’t say that about a character hat’s on the cover. But I’ll feel like seeing his face again someday. FYI, I do like Kagura a lot, but the cycles don’t apply to the Yorozuya trio.
