I have talked about this before, yet I always feel upset when I read Anti/NH arguments. I'm a pretty sensitive guy, so little things get to me. A lot of the more passionate arguments will really bring NS fans down, and make the fandom stupid. Also, I always feel like, in the back of my head, that they have point. NH can't be super popular just cause, there has to be the reason why so many fans believe in it.
The thing is, pairing fans will latch onto a pairing that has little to no chance and believe it will happen even in the face of contradictory evidence. Zuko/Katara is still an excellent example of the way shipping takes on a life of it's own, to this day it is still the most popular pairing in the A:TLA fandom regardless of not becoming canon. Through most of the series, Zuko and Katara were enemies and rarely interacted but people truly believed it would happen, never mind all the evidence that pointed in Aang/Katara's direction. In the end Zuko and Katara did become friends -- late in the final season -- once she finally forgave him, and then Katara ended up with Aang.
Granted, Zutara shippers did feel some validation knowing that the writers' did toy with the idea of Zuko/Katara, but that was during the early stages of story development, and the writers' themselves said that it would never work.
What makes NaruHina popular is not the likelihood of it happening, but the trope. A shy girl getting the "popular" guy, and you don't have to look far to find this trope in one form or another. I think a lot of people empathize with Hinata because she's someone who doesn't quite fit in and lot of them feel that way themselves. And her personality gives her a sense of vulnerability that brings out sympathy for her with readers.
But the problem is, the people rooting for Hinata also tend to look at the manga through a Hinata based perspective, forgetting or just ignoring, that she is a secondary character and not the heroine of the story who is meant to triumph over adversity in the end. That is, unfortunately for them, not her role in the story. Hinata is only meant to embody Naruto's ability to change and influence others and is often used as a foil for Sakura -- the actual heroine of the story.
Wait...wut?
I've been going through some of the hate mail I've been receiving from our lovely NaruHina friends, and there was one particular message that...caught my interest...to say the least.
Apparently...if Naruto ends up with Sakura, Hinata, with all her wisdom and strength, will attempt to kill Naruto and Sakura for revenge.....
......huh? What happened to the sweet innocent girl they make her out to be? Did she go somewhere? W-T-F is going on here?
I think we're dealing a whole new level of desperation, wishful thinking, and...something else in that mix, because this guy...I think he's a little on the Coo-coo side of town.
I'm obviously no fan of Hinata, but I know she's not..."crazy" enough to do something like that...
That's not news to me at all, I already heard that one I think two years ago on deviantart. I don't see the point of paying any attention to such a wild claim or any reason to bring it up.
