I hate when writers turn a character into a Mary-Sue (it's poor writing- period)- the girl from the second Shippuden movie was a Mary-Sue, and they had Naruto acting more like he was in love with her than with Sakura. In this episode they do other Mary-Sue sins with Hinata- stealing a prime element from Sakura's childhood and tacking it onto Hinata's (and making Naruto be her rescuer to boot)-already this is too irritating just typing it out, can't stand to type out the rest of the Mary-Suing in this episode- just look at what broken figurine said... giant

And lastly, I'm disgusted at them giving the middle finger to Kishimoto. They did exactly what said he didn't like in the fan letters misreading of the manga. With the last it does make me look askance at their over playing Sakura's tsundere tendencies- maybe it's not just for the comedic element but to make their (outright admitted last episode's omake) fanboy favorite Hinata look better- which would be more Mary-Suing of Hinata.
I think Kishimoto was already somewhat aware of this problem with the animators- which is why he made the public comment at the Jump Festa (rather than in the second fanbook interview) about "fan letters" bashing Sakura and showing an over praising obsession with Hinata. I think that was Kishimoto's subtle way of telling the animators to cut this behavior out. Of course Studio Pierrot promptly decides to give Kishimoto the middle finger- first by making a mock of his words with having Sakura saying almost the same words, but done in a way that it makes her look like a childish girl throwing a tantrum (which is grossly out of character for part 2 Sakura, by the way, and even somewhat out of character for part 1 Sakura), while Hinata is meek Miss Innocent who just "can't help" the animators love her so much. It's not even the slight naruhina filler inserts they've done all along that gets my irritation level up, it's their long history of taking what is supposed to a minor support character and making her look more heroic than even Naruto- the title character. How many times in part 1 fillers did they make Naruto look dumber than he was in the manga, make him the butt of jokes, etc... while Hinata was heroic- pulling out all kinds of made up jutsus her character never had and never will have....
Kishimoto is likely pretty peeved about this (both the mocking of his words in last episodes omake, and this episode trashing of canon) He's likely even more determined now Sakura will be even more heroic and even more determined to bring Naruto and Sakura's romantic bond into a central focus. He might also be peeved enough to do something that outright shows Hinata's negative points- something he's kept subtle until now. I won't go into them here because it might be taken as character bashing, but if you've got a good eye for subtle character points in manga you'll have noticed in part 2 of the manga Kishimoto hasn't always made Hinata's actions, or lack of actions look positive- in fact, there's some of that in chapter 437 itself. I'll leave it at that.
Wow ciardha you took the words right out of my mouth Pierot may not be fond of Sakura but Kishi is fond of her so after watching this episode like you said he will be determine now to make her more heroic who knows she might end up saving Naruto's life. Kishi might get even with Pierot by making N/S canon sooner than he has it plan or perhaps he's ignoring what they are doing with Hinata and keep up developing N/S like he has always done, although he must be feeling irritated with ep 166. The omake made me laugh but it only fuels the fire for the anti Sakura fans and increases the Mary Suing of Hinata they should at least keep Sakura in her part 2 character not her part 1 character.

I totally agreed with you. I love Hinata but I have to admit that the Hinata-obseesion is driving me nuts sometime. It's not even about NH but Hinata only. However, I don't worried about the changing pairing problem because to do that, the studio will have to add lots of filler so that NH might be credible. Even so, the filler part won't follow the main story and that will lead to a big fat flot for the anime adaptation and I doubt that's what they want.
Beside, it's true that there is lots of NH ( mainly Hinata) filler but there is also lots of NS as well. For example, the ' mud-ball medicine' that Sakura make for Naruto when he is training to create the fuuton Rasen shuriken wasn't there in the manga. At the end of episode 74, Sakura look at the picture of team 7 and all the flashback that she has focus about Naruto. Sure, she also look at Sasuke at the end but the main focus of the moment is about her questioning her ability to do something useful and significant for Naruto. To me, this particuar filler doesn't show the usual Sakura that kick Naruto for almost no reason but the other more soft side of her. In my POV, the animator didn't always put Sakura in the negative light but I must admit that they do have the tendencies to exaggerated to show the more violent side of her a little to much.
In the end, I must admit that they add to much dramatic effect that ruined the version of the manga. In the manga, Hinata's was made in a way that didn't overshadow Naruto heroic but a girl that try to do good yes but also being selfish while doing it. In the anime, she does say it but the ' over-exaggerated drama' effect of the flashback and her fight with Pein destroyed not only the more selfish side of her but make her, like her many fan view her, like a goddess.
Anyway, like I said, I'll start worrying with the animator scewing up the anime when they start adding Hinata in moment that she shouldn't even be there in the first place. If they make Naruto go see Hinata after Pein's fight then I'll scream.
BTW, I also agree with you about the analysis of Sailor Moon and I coudn't say it better myself

Maybe his response was meant to pull on the heartstrings, but it was just confusing to me. At the very least he would be yelling at her to run. No, he seems to look at her determination and her confession as just another thing that's going to fail, and just can't watch her demise.
But I wonder too if it wasn't a cop out from the animators. They made up a bunch of stuff for Hinata, but decided not to embellish on Naruto. So the only way they could get him through these made up scenes was to just rob him of a reaction completely.
It would make more sense for him to be a consistent, panicky mess that results in the immediate explosion into kyuubi, than to have him be surprised by her confession, then resigned to her fate, and then break out into kyuubi after her death which they both acknowledged would happen.
