Gintama had 100 less screening than Naruto. I guess Sunrise underestimated the fanbase.

Was the success of the third movie the reason that allowed season 3 to happen that started airing today (another one of those mangas/animes that will have to wait until the summer).

I'm not an avid anime watcher, but from what I see anime that have 12/24 episode usually only have two season and perhaps they will get ova and 1 or 2 movie.
Sometime because of fan(market) demand a third season would be produce.

In a way, I would say yes but perhaps not the main reason. The anime was going to end it there but the movie did huge in quality and box office. I saw gif of the first episode and it is funny to start off with an apology that a new season is happening. Even Sorachi (I believe that's the mangaka) was like "Oh wow, really..."

But who knows. It's back and that's awesome.

Oh I see. So Gintama only had 2 movies. One in 2010 & one in 2013

But you're right, with the number of screens both films got during their release, they both earned more than 1 billion yen, so pretty much they did underestimate Gintama's fanbase.

What has me wondering is how this series that has been running for 12 years is not that known in the western fanbase. I'll definitely check it out, but I'm conflicted with whether I should start the manga or the anime. Most likely, I'll read the manga first, and will catch up with season 3 (I'm sorry, but I can't watch 200+ episodes XD).

To be honest I have no clue , I've always wonder myself  why it isn't more popular then the abomination kitten Naruto !? . The thing is that  Gintama didn't had the budget that Naruto had  and wasn't advertised much like Naruto  so that's one of the reasons sign . But now its a different ball game   Gintama fans are celebrating today  the fandom is so happy right now its sky rocketing    , We were praying for this for a very very long time  . 

 

Both ways is fine whether you chose manga or anime  but my suggestion to you is start with anime first  , its consistent its very much on track with the manga . Though if you start with the anime start from Episode 3 bc 1&2 are introductions like short OVA's  XD . Either way you won't regret it  that's 100% sure XD .

So I started rereading Bakuman after putting it on hold in 2011, and OMG this is literary genius. I knew it was dealing with manga, but wow I'm pretty shocked at what I've been seeing and I'm only on chapter 21.

Yeah  agree  with you here , Its the Chunin exams that made Naruto appealing to most and P2 beginning was ok  but then all falls down after Sasuke chase party  .

 

Yeah Those three dorks are perfect like real family their bond is so good XD . Not like Team Dysfunctional  . There is not a single character I hate in Gintama everyone are given the right amount of focus  Sorachi outclasses Kishimoto in everything characters , themes , bonds , build up , fights  when things go serious in Gintama then you know its the kitten  and Sorachi does it perfectly XD .  Yeah trust me you can't go wrong in here with whatever you chose  manga or anime  , but the anime is much better it does total justice to the original work the manga IMO XD .

When the main character said that they want a title in shonen jump manga to get cancel when they join the magazine. The one that cross my mind is naruto.
