I don't understand. Are you saying he said "lucky me" or "thanks to your vest"? Both are wrong to me but anyway. He doesn't talk about any vest at any moment. If you read ramenanmitsu's and my post you would see that he doesn't say the word "vest" at any moment. I thought my post was clear and understandable about the translation, but maybe no one read it or maybe it's not clear enough I don't know.

So...who's right? Or should I think as "Choose your translation?"

It means that you've got my opinion, plus the other ones, so you can choose either ramenanmitsu or Rikdou's translation. PLus, it also mean that with all I've explained you can do the translation yourselves, no? But to me, ramenanmitsu is right. I explain in my post what translation could work and what translation couldn't work. Btw I made a mistake "luckily" also has "okagesama de" so it doesn't work neither, but I already said it since I said to me it was "thanks to both of you".

I'm confused. Didn't we establish it's to that vest? Look, I'm not twisting, it's more like listening on what's being written. Am I mistaken something? The guy already established it a while back, while we pulling Phoenix Wright. Not that I'm saying we shouldn't but put it this way, I'm not part of this. Don't look at me.
I'm a listener more so than a leader. Don't look at me to put blame on. I'm the confused man. Until someone helped me out now, I see it as what I already established.

I'm talking in general, not only to you. You were just trying to explain what the others were saying regarding the translation 'lucky me'. I understand that. I'm sorry if I sounded like I was blaming you.

I think there are three translation ideas now.
1.) Lucky me - Sorry, but this translation doesn't make sense.

And....
2.) Thanks to the vest
3.) Thanks to you guys

When was the translation of "thanks to the vest" ever 'established'? If I ever heard it before, I would have surely objected to it. おかげ is a word that explains the reason with a hint of gratitude. So it's similar with "because" but with an additional gratitude added to the word itself. Therefore, it cannot be translated as "because" but it's very close. Maybe this knowledge will help for people to choose what Sasuke was talking about.

Sometimes people use the word おかげで in a sarcastic manner to blame another.
お前のおかげで仕事に遅刻したよ。Thanks to you, I got late for work.
It's sarcasm, because you're showing gratitude to somebody who did you wrong.

It just it wasn't that long ago I read from others about it. But since you guys are establishing that it's up to you to choose, then I guess I will wait regardless. Now, let's just say Sasuke really refer to what I said or rather the other translator said, not that I think 100% is true, how would you feel about that?

well i read them and i agree with u most of the time. and thanks for the translation . . and people afraid  that if sasuke became good again that mean the end of narusaku . which means all the 500+ chapters between narusaku .are waste..

Wow it's so interesting to see people having different translations for the same language.

Japanese is all about interpretation. If you have read my post, you would have seen that there is only 2 or even 3 (okage de todoita) words to express "thanks to you I made it".

It's takl translation that began the whole "thanks to your vest"

An example of "luckily" with okaede:

おかげさまで借金を完済できます。okagesamade shakkin wo kansai dekimasu. "Luckily, I'm able to pay my credit."

I really think you should buy the "thanks to you", it's the closest to japanese, the more  neutral, the less biased, the one that make the most sense. "Lucky me" doesn't work here, it could have worked, but not there (I said it in my first post whatever the mistake I made, I said it first that it didn't work), I'm sorry if I confused you about it, it just wanted to give details on the okage de thing, but I shouldn't have, sorry. The vest thing doesn't work too, it's true that it's thanks to the vest that he made it, but it's an interpretation, that's not what Sasuke says. He says "Thanks to... I reached." That litterally what he's saying. The "you" is implied, it's obvious.

Thank you, it made my day. I don't think it's the case of Rikudou. He's a good translator, better than me, it's just a difference of interpretation. As for 4Life, I think I confused him when I gave details on the "okage de" and "okagesama de". It's my fault.

So then why do people praise Viz so much as if they're the ones who's always right and can't be wrong?

Because they are completely biased towards SS/NH and translate things to make it look positive for them when it's not. Best examples:

Chapter 504:

  • Neutral translation: "Don't fall for a weird girl, find someone ike your mother."
  • VIZ: "Don't fall for the first girl that comes in your way, find someone like your mother."

Chapter 675:

  • Neutral translation: "Though you still like him, the feelings behind that love are different"
  • VIZ: "Though you still like him, it's on a totaly different level now"

Well.....I think it is okay to give Sasuke some credit. I mean, as it is he is going to say thank you to Sakura sometime or the other. Simple gratitude would do no harm...I guess?

Do you have the link? The link two posters posted here doesn't have the "thanks to your vest" in his translation.

An example of "luckily" with okaede:
おかげさまで借金を完済できます。okagesamade shakkin wo kansai dekimasu. "Luckily, I'm able to pay my

The above still expresses gratitude.
I asked my mother for the above translation and she said, "Thanks to all you guys support, I was able to pay my debt."
Even though the other people have nothing to do with paying back the debt, you show your gratitude for the people surrounding you.

Do you know 暑中見舞い?It's a greeting card you send during summer. In the P.S. you write 「おかげ様で、体調が回復しました。」Of course, the people you send to had nothing to do with it, but you still show your gratitude towards their support(whether they really supported you or not isn't important).

My mother's explanation.
「おかげ様でというのは自分をへりくだった言い方。自分一人で何かを成し遂げたわけではないことを示している。」
I'm too lazy to translate the above but I think you understand. Since your Japanese is so good I'm tempted to write in Japanese only because English is sometimes hard :P

Anyways, it's just her two cents....

P.S. You can use おかげ様で as 'thanks to the protection of 神、仏様' as well. However, I don't think this will equate to 'luckily' since 'luckily' implies you somehow happened to get the positive roll of the dice, instead of your ancestors actively protecting you.

Its clear that Sasuke used the vest to swap places. And it is clear  he was explaining that part of what he did  to Obito. However it is not clear what Sasuke meant in his thanking part.

Did he mean  "Thanks to the efforts of both of you I got this oppurtunity to swap"  OR  "Thanks to the vest near you,  I could swap and join you here" ?

My opinion, the second one makes more sense because 1) he was explaining his move to Obito, 2) the panel of vest shown at the end.

Woah, I knew the one about chapter 504

I even checked with somebody I know who doesn't give a kitten about pairings. So if people asked, I can tell them about  somebody who doesn't seem biased to them(seeing as you you NS).

But I never knew about 675...

Thanks a lot c:

ok guys it can be both ways  but because sasuke stopped sakura from falling . its more save to think that he thanked them. cause if he thanked them .thats mean he changed a little . so there might be more ss moments(no romantic ) just moments. and if we thought he thanked the vest (while he thanked them) . then we will go crazy . saying kishi playing with us . . so for me he thanked them .and if he did thanked the vest then its ok its pure sasuke.

If Kakashi says that Sakura still likes him, but the feelings behind that are different, don't you guys think that it would imply that her feelings have faded rather than matured?
