I know that you guys hate listening stuff from Sawyer7mage, but I feel compelled to quote this one statement that he made for the new episode review b/c this seriously explains why many people like Hinata.
 

So the only thing I can see in this statement from an absolute objective standpoint is that he's being bias, bias, bias. True Hinata is kind. And by that reasoning people think that she deserved Naruto, and NaruHina is better. Not once did he mention Naruto's feelings. Why did he deserve to get Hinata? Why not Sakura? Naruto is not only being kind to Sakura; he's willing to sacrifice his happiness for her.
Sakura is also kind, but also able to speak up her mind, but to people she'll always be the one who treats Naruto like kitten.

Sure, she cared about Naruto, but only for selfish reasons. Sakura grew to care for him. She showed progress. And in doing so, wanted to stand beside him and support his dream. Hinata never does that.

Sometimes I wonder what Hinata would have become if she never has fallen in love with Naruto. She would have become an amazing person- at least better than her "Naruto-Kun".

No, I got you. That's an example that she's more concerned about that kind of words-reafirmation that the rest. You can see there how the rest of the team treated Kiba. Anywa, what does it has do to if he's like Naruto? Nothing.

Her smile at NS hug was another example. Ugh. Kishimoto really ruined her character development. I mean, I would still dislike her, but at least I wouldn't have concrete complains more than "I don't like that type of character". The thing is, she's more selfish for Naruto that is kind with the others.

One thing lost to some of the Hinata fanboys is that you can be a kind person without being a doormat. (Ranma's mother in Ranma 1/2 is a great example.  She is prepared to act as a second if her husband and son have to commit seppuku because that is what their family honor demands, but she is also graceful, kind, and friendly.)   Hinata is beyond yasashi, the Japanese ideal of femininity.  She tries, she really does.  But yasashi is being kind, graceful, and honorable while having a will of iron at the same time.
