Regarding the tense, it's the same as I said. Past-continuous. I don't know how to use past-continuous in English though....We are still in discussions.
So she said that
そこそこガンバってたんだ!! this is the phrase in regards to Viz's past tense tendency. If it would have been past tense, it should've been ガンバった and that past continuous is ガンバっていた and that its short form would be ガンバってた.
Brb! LOL! Anyway, VIZ's translation is once again, bullsh**! She said the same thing when she saw 685 translation... And she's not even into Naruto, lol.
Anyway, I'll ask about that part of her translation, maybe she can explain why she translated it that way :)

@chatte
she said so? :/ Well i guess that everyone has their own pov... but the ね is also the equivalent of ない, especially when it's used with a verb or adjective...

Uhm, yes, she did.
As for why she translated that way, she explained to me in Romanian why, so I hope I'll explain my best in English, LOL!
Brb with the completion.
So, we have 母ちゃんの言った事 = the things my mum said -> this is the literal translation.
全部うまくいってねーけど!= it's a phrase put on imperative (i don't know how exactly to explain this in English cause in Romanian it makes FULL SENSE, hope my further explaining will help!), which is like saying "I hope everything goes well!", like someone saying a prayer type of thing, like he's literally praying to those things to go well, get what I mean?
Like I said, the way she explained me in Romanian makes full sense, it's just that it's hard to make sense now in 3 languages, LOL!

Thats used when trying to confirm/ask about something. Even then it would be more like "right?" Instead of "you know".ね, she said it's "ne" and it doesn't mean no, that it's translated as... "you know" [/size][/background]
In this case it's a different form of ない. As 六道仙人 said, when it's used in the end of a verb or an adjective it will be translated to no, not or haven't.

To me, the raws are not the full on answer, its what occurs in the series with the words we need to look out for.
Lets take 504 again and Viz's mess up of it right? We had the raws and online scans say find a girl like kushina, the viz one in the manga said dont fall for the first to come your way.
Now out of all these events, which was right? The find someone like your mother one, out of all the forms one can see the manga and canon anime, we have these:
The raws, the online translations or "amatuer ones", the viz translation or "offical ones", the anime subs, and the anime dubs (also viz). Now out of all these, guess which use viz manga translation? Yes only the viz manga, the ones that use the find a girl like me though, all of the others use this one including the english dub which viz also has. It was also a matter of well look who was compared to Kushina, was it Ino? Nope, was it Hinata? Nope, it was Sakura. So because of the events of 504 to 631, yes the find a girl like me one was right.
Now I don't know if viz is smoking some bad crack or whatever, but seriously what could possess them to need to change something that they knew they screwed up for no reason, its like why is everything in 504 the same save this foreshadow? What reason could they have for changing it? And to do it again here to make it seem like naruto gave up? how many more times shall they play stupid before this? Seriously if this happens again with the foreshadow, viz is running with some foul play. What reason could they have for this, its just sad when a bunch of online non professional people can translate this much more clearly rather than the professional translators? They end up changing the context and otherwise confusing people, in part people will be lost in the end due to Viz mishandling things like this.
Context can mean everything but like this, well now they are just being foolish, its no wonder some NH and SS fans will go crazy, Viz completely changes the context for this minor deal for some odd reason and you think they would have learned with even changing the difference in the manga to the anime, but no.... they screwed up, they jumped the gun in 504, they had no reason to change it, now people will be lost for this subplot hint as a result. Viz royally F'd up in the hint department for the love subplot and they had no legitimate reason to, there was no reason to change it to dont fall for the first to come your way. This is why I like the online ones better than viz, the actions and translations speak more than whatever errors viz makes.
But in total, yeah the originals were right, viz was wrong because of the events that happened. Viz screwed up, and apparently with this new chapter, they did again. Honestly, I can only laugh at viz for mess ups like this, when there was no reason they had to change this stuff, its not that hard for these professional translators to use the words "find someone like your mother" unless the guy right there didn't know these specific words, I think they were just playing stupid that day when 504 was translated for the west. Or they were just being dumb and thought herpa derp this means Hinata. Yeah because someone like Kushina obviously meant Hinata, or naruto is obviously going to just ignore Sakura despite still loving her. God talk about professionals being unprofessional.

I see. Oh, btw, about what you said with the fairly well she said you're right, it's translated as that. It's the context and the adaptation to English that can also be somewhat changed to trying his best. I guess this depends.
GAH, if only I'd knew Japanese as well to be able to properly get through you guys what she means...

So all in all its still basically what we said though, he has been doing everything Kushina told him, but has had trouble on some stuff like finding a girl like kushina, eating more than ramen, etc, but despite the hardships he is still intent on fulfilling them, right?
No matter if naruto knows Sakura is the girl like kushina or not though, otherwise the audience already knows or should know this for this reason at that point as well (with 457 being a reason why he also cannot fulfill this girl like her deal yet).

Definitely, ofc. No matter how you twist it, in the end, it's the whole story that gives you the right context of what Naruto's saying.

Hm? I'm confused? How can a word that means fairly well be used as "best" in English? Is that how English works? Because in Japanese, そこそこ means fairly well/ reasonably. It has no meaning of "best".I see. Oh, btw, about what you said with the fairly well she said you're right, it's translated as that. yeah, it would be also strange if Naruto, who has been always the promotor of "Never give up!!" all over these years, just gave up and admitted his debacle in girls or studies...

interesting... What if it's "I have been doing pretty hard!" ?
eh, you missed a lot... try to read the all conversation... it will make clear to you...
Yes I read. Thank you I understand now =)
IMO, Naruto is talking in general after he said "tonikaku" / "anyway".
So, when he's saying that "not everything is doing as Kushina said", he's not talking only about girls.
It's true the fact he's saying this just after he talked about girls could make you think so, but as everyone said, "tonikaku" change the subject. So Naruto just eluded the question about girls.
Some are using this to prove Naruto was joking in 631. I don't agree at all.
The context was different when Minato asked Sakura. Naruto answered seriously to his dad, it's obvious to me. If Naruto would have say "of course she's my girlfriend !" with a goofy face we could name this a joke. But Naruto thought about it carefully, and he answered with a lot of honesty because he expressed the vagueness of the relation. Right now, he's not sure if it's friendship or romantic. But from it, it's obvious he still wants to be with Sakura. Or else he could have say "no she loves Sasuke", or "no, I love someone else". LOL
Kishimoto chose to make Naruto answered to let Sakura answer as a "mystery".
Here in 691 the context is really different, Naruto is thinking about his mom, he doesn't want her to worry or to be regretful about him and what he has done until now in his life. He's also very sad because his father is leaving and he's talking to him for the last time. He's trying to say it all very quick, and he's trying to force himself not to cry. It's not the same situation at all. In 631 it was a lot simpler. The weight of Minato's departure was not here. The weight of not worrying Kushina was not here.
I have to say even if the translation is not pretty clear, having Naruto giving up on something would be very OOC, be it Sakura or anything else. So I don't think what Naruto said was having "giving up" vibes at all. Naruto never gives up on anything. He's like that. That's his major line from the beginning. I think he will never give up. IMO he can't stop loving Sakura. There is no explaining to it. That's it and that's all.
But it's possible he's fearing that Sakura still loves Sasuke.
I can totally see Kishimoto make Naruto walk calmly away from sakura, wishing her to be happy with Sasuke and Sakura running back to him.
At this point of the story, IMO Naruto still believes Sakura loves Sasuke. He needs to be convinced. Also, I think Naruto is not the type to force himself on a girl, so the move for canonization is up to Sakura.
I still think Naruto might tell her something about her forehead, and I still think Kishi will make a chapter 3 call back, but I think the person who will canonize the couple will be Sakura.
That's why even if Naruto happens to force himself to accept to let Sakura with Sasuke, as he as done in the past, Sakura will call him back. It's obvious Sakura has changed her feelings. Her feelings are the key in the story. Her feelings are the only ones that has changed. She is the ONLY character in this manga on which Kishimoto spent so much time empathising the feelings and showing how they are a "mystery". He put too much emphasis on her feelings.
I think we shouldn't bother too much with this translation after all, and we should wait, because IMO, it's impossible for NaruSaku to no happen. Kishimoto would kitten on his story by doing that.

Ok, hmm, how should I explain it... So, with the things overall he's been doing fairly well but in those things, he gave his best to make them work, get what i mean?

Exactly. And it also shows that no matter how you put it, all the translations (if not tampered with! Viz, I am watching you!) indicate towards that!

I understand you..What about the それは? It gave her an impression that the speaker was talking about someone near to the listerner? Or just whatever a liberal impression that you can get from it?

Ofc, to each his own, haha! Not to mention that in the end, each one's perspective over things come into play.
