A NaruHina fan told me that, had Sakura been the one to hold hands with Naruto, we would be reacting 100% differently than we are now. This made me curious. How would we have reacted had it have been Sakura that held hands with Naruto? Would we have considered it a mutual moment?
To me, the difference would be that Naruto and Sakura have a different relationship than Naruto and Hinata do. In the case of Naruto and Hinata, we don't know whether or not Naruto has any feelings for her that are beyond friendship. In fact, we have to come to the conclusion that he still loves Sakura because, so far, he hasn't stated otherwise. In Naruto and Sakura's case, the person in question is Sakura. While we know that Sakura still loves Sasuke, it's also a cannon fact that Sakura's feelings for Naruto have changed.
So, is it bias to say that the same moment occurring between Naruto and Sakura would be more romantic than it was between Naruto and Hinata?
I actually wouldn't be reacting to a "NaruSaku moment" I would be more reacting to "KISHI KEPT HIS PROMISE AND MADE SAKURA THE HEROINE!!!"
When I think of anime couples, I have to see reactions from both characters. I have to see what kind of reactions occur. In this the only one who reacted romantically was Hinata. Naruto wasn't thinking of how he is holding Hinata's hand. He wasn't thinking "Wow, I am holding a cute girl's hand. Cool" He was thinking about his resolve and charging up his attack. He took Hinata's hand to charge hers.
Thinking about it like that Naruto wasn't thinking about love. Only Hinata was...as usual. The whole "I won't let go of your hand" or whatever is so awkward because we don't know who said it, what context they said it, and why they said it. So I am completely shoving that aside.
I was shocked when I read the chapter. I thought it was because of the NH moment, but then after I thought about it, the NH was the least of my problems. I...WE knew that Hinata was going to get development. We can't deny this . What shocked me was what it took to give her that development. Someone close to her had to die and the main character had to lose faith so easily for it to happen. Neji's death I can understand, but Naruto losing faith like that felt so forced and out of character.
I know I keep repeating this point, but that is how much it has urked me. I just...cant believe you have to diminish the main character like that just to advance her. Okay, Neji's death was a shocker, but I'd expect him to be pissed rather than become hopeless. It would have been more acceptable if it was Sasuke who died or someone closer like Sakura or Kakashi. Neji...I mean I'd hate to diminish his death, but truth is he wasn't as close as the other three.
Plus if Sasuke died and Naruto did that and blamed himself for it, you know how much of an impact that would have made. It wouldn't have felt cheap and stupid as this one did.
Sometimes maybe we even confuse our own bias when it comes to why we hate a chapter to what we really hate about it.
And, judging by some of the non-pairing fans reactions I have seen, this reactions is normal.
Also, the NH shouldn't talk because if it was Sakura who did and not Hinata, how many of them would be saying how unromantic it was and how holding hands doesn't prove anything. How Naruto is just giving her chakra and how Sakura still loves Sasuke and blah blah blah. So NH would be guilty of the same crime.
