This hit me again while discussing Bleach with a friend of mine. I was disappointed with how characters were treated in one arc of the show, then they told me to look at the story as one big picture and not as a series of arcs. It reminded me just what great characters they are, even if that one arc didn't develop them.
This reinforced my resolve that NS is the superior ship in terms of support. Is NH getting more fanservice lately? Undeniably. Is that a sign that Kishi is changing direction? Possibly. But apply the "big picture", here. Which pairing has had the most support throughout all of the arcs, in this one large story as one, which pairing? NS.
At this point, it isn't a question of which ship has the most support. That goes to NS, no competition. No, it's a question of which pairing will become canon. There is a difference. If we assume that Kishi will follow through with what he's set up the most, then NS is in the lead for the race to become canon. However, considering how sloppy his writing has been lately, we can't really assume that anymore. This evens out the race to become canon; every pairing has a chance now. Bad writing does that. NaruHina, SasuSaku, NaruSasu, NaruIno, SasuTema, hell, almost anything has a chance now.
If you're a NH fan, power to ya. Your OTP has more of a chance now than ever at becoming canon, whether it will be inconsistent storytelling or not. Enjoy the moment, it is yours as of right now.
NS's biggest handicap right now isn't NH possibilities, it isn't SS possibilities: it's Kishimoto's inconsistent writing.
Yes, that is how I generally view Naruto (sadly, I dropped Bleach. It really really... lost my interest with the Hecto Mundo or whatever)
That is why I was perfectly content until more recently. I look back into the past, I was fine with Hinata's confession, Sakura's confession (even though it was a bit of a fail) and just about everything else. Although in that arc other characters got spotlight, I never felt like any of the true main characters were overshadowed. For the most part, Kishi WAS consistent with his characters and just how much attention he gave them. I thought from the Pein arc forward, Sakura would continue having a prominent role and get more important conflicts/fights under her bolt. That seemed to be the case when those people came in search of information of Sasuke and she was there with Naruto.
One topic I forgot to mention I would like to discuss. Some people feel that Hinata's moment during THE battle of the world does not overpower Sakura's moments. I can't say I feel the same. No, this does NOT mean she isn't the heroine. Kishi has already stated that Sakura is the heroine and all. I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about the quality of his heroine. She's the heroine, she he should write her like one. Other characters got important moments, but they never truly made a main characters accomplishments a laughing stock.
Hinata's moment does not equate to all of Sakura's past accomplishments, but I just wonder what is Kishi thinking. Why would you give Hinata that type of accomplishment at THAT moment. Why even create a situation where readers would question who the heroine is even after you confirm it yourself. That says to me that he's not being consistent. If there's this much unrest within the community over something as simple as 'who is the main heroine, he's just not being consistent. If you aren't consistent, then I think that means the quality is not where it needs to be.
But even now, I wonder... maybe Kishi has been consistent for a while. Other than the Gaara arc, it seems Sakura doesn't get any attention unless it's about Sasuke. Maybe Kishi began moving her to the background before more recent events and we didn't notice until it became glaringly obvious. If he was surprised about the reaction to Sakura's confession, maybe he really doesn't know how to write a heroine. I mean, he does, what Hinata did was very heroine like moment, obviously. So I'm guessing Sakura is only meant to be involved when Sasuke/team 7 is involved.
