Exactly, plus Minato never got the chance to meet Hinata (actually no, he had the chance but Kishimoto decided not to). Minato also pointed out the she reminds him of Kushina and when Naruto was talking about alchool and girls, he was smiling, knowing who he was talking about.

Yeah.

So basically, this didn't push Naruto and Sakura closer, but rather a simple reminder that Naruto is still in love with Sakura and is still trying to win her over. To me, that is still a plus 1 in my book.

 

Guys, don't go against your words...

On the contrary, I think my viewpoint is even stronger now. The context of the scene and the words Naruto speaks show that he still loves Sakura no matter how you slice it.

Still, the "tried his best" is past tense. That mean it's debatable and you can't really spin it as pro-NaruSaku as much as the MP translation. It's definitely possible it's not negative, but NH/SS fans can use it as proof Naruto's given up on Sakura and fell for a girl that's not like his mother and you can't really deny it for sure without being biased.

 

Damn. This dialogue was even more ambiguous than I thought.

 

I'm pretty sure he said he was trying his best. I mean, he's passing on these words to his mother. I don't think he'd want to let his mom know that he failed or gave up, at a time like that. It's not very like Naruto anyways.

 

Either way it would be nice to know whether or not it was past tense or present tense. I think it's present though.

And can we all appreciate that Sakura and Kakashi, two important witnesses to Naruto's life and growth, were present during that moment and attentively watching what happened? Sakura already is cognizant of Naruto's feelings for her, and Kakashi made the observation about Sakura's feelings about Sasuke having changed. I have a feeling it will all come together in a big way. I just don't know how to put it into the right words.

That's true lol. But even they can have more creditability depending on what scene they're arguing for. In this scene, it really is debatable. The past tense translation isn't really anything we can spin in our favor, though I don't think it's necessarily negative either if that translation is accurate.

 

This is really annoying! I'm not forgetting the magnitude of 631 by Naruto confirming his feelings for Sakura with Hinata in the area, but what the hell is the new chapter supposed to mean. I was perfectly fine with the "trying his best" translation, but this one grates on my nerves because of the ambiguity.

 

What annoys me the most is that if it's accurate is that NH/SS fans are going to be eating it up all this time. This will be exhausting ...

Well I know Naruto is not referring to Hinata or any kind of that kitten bc he hasn't tried kitten with her in the first place so she possed no chalenge to him , but at the same time this does sound like Naruto saying that he tried but failed despite Sakura being the girl so I really don't know how should I view this ? Kishi is making me sick with his ambiguous dialogues  .

Just wait. He only turned 17, so things will start to get serious more so than give up altogether. Plus, if this is the end of the arc, then why not see who got the last laugh. That's where it will tell you everything.....even though it has for the past ever, but whatever.

To why people think they're the best at translating baffles me

 

Well for the Zoro/Zolo thing that is 4Kids' falt, they were the ones who translated Zoro's name as Zolo, Viz used Zolo to match the anime, but from what I've read after Funimation got the rights to dub One Piece they changed it to Zoro, but I'm not sure if that is true or not.

 

EDIT: after a little research, Zoro's name was originally Zoro in the in the first volume, but was changed to Zolo to match the 4Kids' Dub, also it was not a miss translation on 4Kids part, they were forced to use Zolo to avoid a possible lawsuit as Zorro was protected under copyright laws.

The way I see it, no matter how minor difference exists between translations, you can't disregard the context. There's a good reason Sakura, Kakashi and Minato were depicted before he said those words (related to studies, finding women, etc). The,context say it out loud --he's not giving up on studies, finding the right one and to become hokage. He admits there are hurdles, recognizes it and told Minato and Kushina he's trying.

There's no link to Hinata no matter how one tried to twist it. There's no mention that he will stop doing his best for study. No implication he is giving up hokage title.

Think about Naruto as a character and then you'll know the real translation. What Viz did with Naruto's line is character asassination... Naruto doesn't give up. Ever. Period.

Yes I understand that  perfectly but I'm really starting to hate on Kishimoto pft , Maybe tried can mean that he has tried till now till this moment but that doesn't necessary means that he has stopped  ahh! who cares anymore pft! we are going canon either way I just hate the playing on Kishi's part *sign*.

Again, calm down a bit... By reading the original, you can understand that Naruto was clearly talking about Sakura, from how he speaks and even Minato's smile. Minato smiles twice here, one when he wishes him a happy birthday and is proud how he did become the man he is now. Then he saddens and we no longer see his face. Until when Naruto does mention the topic of girls and there we can see for the second time the Minato's smile. It's obvious the author is makingu s clear that Minato has realized who his son was talking about... Also because Minato never knew Hinata, even though the author had a clear chance to let him know ner, a significant detail.
Naruto was about to say her name (Sakura) but probably the guy notices that things are not easy as his father can think and changes suddenly the topic. Let us don't forget that there is also Sakura around, you never know how she could take it after the recent headbutt LOL
The fact he says "I havedone fairly my best!" doesn't like he is admiting he has failed with Sakura or has gave up with those things. Obviously I am not gonna to say that he will become a great studious or something in future. I'm just saying that the originale doesn't give me this impression, but he was talking about what happened up to that point in time.

Hinata doesn't even mentioned in manier implied in this story.

Are you worried about NH/SS fans? Who cares, you also know that they listen and understand just to what or who they want and they would never take into account what we think or say. Those are facts, sadly.
