Wait, I'm confused. I know the "I dunno" part of the VIZ translation is inaccurate, but what about the last part? Did Naruto really say trying his best in past tense or is it present tense? I want to use the more accurate translation.

I wonder what answer Sasuke gave the sage, that made the old man even give Sasuke god powers in the first place. ( I also wonder why Hashi gave him senju cells.)

Although, I'm 75% positive it was do to plot.

It doesn't matter what Sasuke told the Sage. People in the Naruto universe just love Sasuke; no matter how evil he is or how badly Sasuke treats them. He's too irresistible.

Chidori through the heart=love letter

Sasuke found the answer of how to connect people with each other. One Chidori through the heart and that person will instantly become your brother/lover/sister/best friend/comrade for eternity.

Which I've told you - time and time again - is dangerous! There will never be consensus, son, among those you have helped to ascend. They will all differ in their views of what it means to be free. The peace you so desperately seek does not exist.

These men are united now by a common cause. But when this battle is finished they will fall to fighting amongst themselves about how best to ensure control. In time it will lead to war. You will see.

I wondering myself to bc that certainly changes things  it comes as that Naruto has given up  on Sakura despite him introducing Sakura as the girl to his father   .

@NarutoFireFoxUzumaki:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It might actually be negative NS if it's in past tense, though to be fair that doesn't really sound like Naruto to give up like that. I'm really confused here. If it really is past tense, then we might need to interpret it differently so we're not biased.

Can any of the Japanese translators clarify this for us please?

It doesn't say that he gave up, some of the things Kushina listed are not going well like studies and other stuff, but he tried his best. That's how I see it.

I don't think naruto give up on sakura.
Unless kishi intend to change two boys one girl love triangle to two girls one boy love triangle. Which I don't think is a good thing.

Yes that's the main reason it doesn't sound like Naruto at all  to give up  but from what I'm seeing its ambiguous and can be taken either way . I'm really starting to get sick of Kishi's ambiguous dialogues  .

When looking at the wording used in the MS and MP translations and combining their implications together (Bad practice, I know...), it reaffirmed the idea that Naruto still believes that it's possible for him to succeed and fulfill his mother's wishes. It seems as though he's still trying, you know? Besides, despite the fact that the headbutt during the girlfriend dialogue could be somewhat of a deterrent, it seems as though he has faith that something is possible, for the very reason he even made that comment. Of course, even then, it seemed that he wasn't entirely too certain about things, which manifested itself in some stuttering.

Either way, no matter how it is translated, it still doesn't support Naruto changing his heart to Hinata. He makes note that he is trying or he tried. If it was about Hinata wouldn't he say he succeeded? To his viewpoint, Sakura still isn't officially his GF, but he doesn't acknowledge Hinata as his GF either despite knowing full well that she loves him.

Again, you have to ask the question why would he say he tried or is trying if the whole point is to win Hinata over and not Sakura? Hinata os already smitten for him so the context of his words make little sense to Hinata in this case. It would make a lot more sense to Sakura's case.

Still, the "tried his best" is past tense. That mean it's debatable and you can't really spin it as pro-NaruSaku as much as the MP translation. It's definitely possible it's not negative, but NH/SS fans can use it as proof Naruto's given up on Sakura and fell for a girl that's not like his mother and you can't really deny it for sure without being biased.

Damn. This dialogue was even more ambiguous than I thought. :pinch:

I don't think best is a good translation for そこそこ. It implies that there is a limitation to how much he can try. While そこそこ means more like "fairly" or a bit better than average.

I'm aware of that  but the girlfriend thing also falls under this  saying "I tried" means just that he has tried but ultimately failed in doing so not that he still tries bc its in the past tense . I don't want to be pessimistic but it sounds like that .

That's what I think, too. If he were certain about his feelings for Hinata, he'd have a more definite answer. Hinata's already confessed, and they had shared something important, when mourning Neji's death, so there'd be no doubt about her reciprocating any feelings that he could've developed for her. However, Naruto still called Sakura his girlfriend several chapters thereafter, and this took place in front of Hinata, might I add. If Naruto definitely did or didn't have someone, he would've been honest about it, especially because he was interacting with his dead father, his role model. It's since he was uncertain that he had such difficulty putting together an appropriate response, I think.

To be fair, what don't the NH and SS spin in their favor? They still believe Sakura is going to fangirl Sasuke again and lick his boots any second now.

Exactly, plus Minato never got the chance to meet Hinata (actually no, he had the chance but Kishimoto decided not to). Minato also pointed out the she reminds him of Kushina and when Naruto was talking about alchool and girls, he was smiling, knowing who he was talking about.
