You mean gintama? I don't think I'm fast. I finish Umibozu faster than Benizakura. I even paused a while on the Beni arc.

If.. if I watched Gintama for the arc only, skipped the usual episode, .. am I a "criminal"? Can I still understand the story?

It wouldn't be a crime, but it wouldn't be a smart move. I mean, you might understand the story, but you will lack the emotional attachment to many of the characters. Just learn to enjoy the comedy in Gintama. Just sit back and let Gintama give you some good laughters. Only then will the sudden shift into a more serious tone hit you. Don't let impatience be the death of your enjoyment to this series.

I enjoy the comedy eps but I won't lie the last arc that I watched, which was Beni-something, has made me want to watch more arc.

Yeah, I remember going to YouTube clips of the one I already saw and I was in the same boat with them. No one told me about other emotions I was going to feel with this series. I was promised only "hahaha!" It's like dealing with Disney: purposely hurt you to get you climb back stronger.

While the show does get breaks, I do think this is the best ongoing adaptation, so props to Sunrise or now to the spin-off of themselves, which is practically the same. It's the only series that uses the great advantage of being anime. It uses openings for laughs, it uses the format as a way to fool the viewers (ending the episode super short and act like it's all cool), when it gets serious, it changed the tone greatly for the right reason (every arcs end on a high note), and many more. To me, this is the best one.
