Ponder is a bit of a shock.

I'm a Florida State fan and a Vikes fan so it's sorta convenient for me that I'll be getting to keep cheering him on. And I think that he's a good QB. But it also seems like a reach and I think that we took BQBA instead of BPA which probably would've been Fairley. I would have preferred to take our chances with Fairley and then whomever was left in the 2nd. Ponder would've been gone, but maybe Dalton or Kaep would've been around. Or Mallett.

No kidding. I hope that Hutch and Loadholt heal up and McKinnie gets back in shape. Apparently, Venus Williams is getting him motivated. Otherwise, Ponder may get broken before he even gets a chance.

2011 FIRST ROUND

1. Panthers- Cam Newton. QB/Auburn
2. Broncos- Von Miller OLB/Texas A&M
3. Bills- Marcell Dareus DT/Alabama
4. Bengals- AJ Green WR/Georgia
5. Cardinals- Patrick Peterson DB/LSU
6. Falcons- Julio Jones WR/Alabama
7. 49ers- Aldon Smith DE/Mizzou
8. Titans- Jake Locker QB/Washington
9. Cowboys- Tyron Smith OT/USC
10. Jaguars- Blane Gabbert QB/Missouri
11. Texans- JJ Watt DE/Wisconsin
12. Vikings- Christian Ponder QB/Florida State
13. Lions- Nick Fairley DT/Auburn
14. Rams- Robert Quinn DE/North Carolina
15. Dolphins- Mike Pouncey C/Florida
16. Redskins- Ryan Kerrigan DE/LB/Purdue
17. Patriots- Nate Solder OT/Colorado
18. Chargers- Corey Liuget DT/DE/Illinois
19. Giants- Prince Amukamara CB/Nebraska
20. Buccaneers- Adrian Clayborn DE/Iowa
21. Browns- Phil Taylor DT/Baylor
22. Colts- Anthony Castonzo OT/Boston College
23. Eagles- Danny Watkins OG/Baylor
24. Saints- Cameron Jordan DE/California
25. Seahawks- James Carpenter OG/Alabama
26. Chiefs- Jon Baldwin WR/Penn State
27. Ravens- Jimmy Smith DB/Colorado
28. Saints- Mark Ingram RB/Alabama
29. Bears- Gabe Carimi OT/Wisconsin
30. Jets- Muhammad Wilkerson DT/Temple
31. Steelers- Cam Heyward DE/Ohio State
32. Derek Sherrod OL/Mississippi State

I'm just going to say this, just by watching this whole thing I completely forgot the first round once it hit the playoffs.

Of the notable snubs in the First Round, Da'Quan Bowers the DE from Clemson who has a knee issue, he nosedived. Some surprises like Atlanta, Saints, the quarterback reaches like Jake Locker and Christian Ponder.

Detroit got scary quick. A notable number of quarterbacks taken and not taken.

Mallet
Dalton
Kapernick
Stanzi

Are still on the board. Watch Cleveland and Washington though, they're taking in a haul of extra picks, especially Cleveland.

Plenty of Recievers and Running backs left, the second round is going to be crazy as the first.

But a message to Cam Newton, your job just got harder with the messages from your Division powers.

Jerry Jones saw a flying pig ate it with some kool aid and drafted an OT in the first round.

A defensive heavy draft as forcast though.

And an addition if no one knew this...FREE AGENCY STARTS TOMORROW

Well, The NFL is trying to re-instate the lockout through the 8th circuit of appeals. My god, I swear if they do this I'm not sure I'm ever going to give a kitten about the NFL. If they don't care about starting the season, then why should I give a kitten about the NFL.

That said, I'm ecstatic they picked Watkins, age issue aside. He is ready to play now and is possibly the best guard prospect in the draft. The right side was atrocious down the stretch. Mind you, Shawn and Stacy Andrews were both failures and had to be let go. And our starting center was done for the year in the first game of the season. But still, Vick wore down because they couldn't protect him against the better pass rushing teams. Now they have a hard working, mean streak guy to play guard. And with Jamal Jackson returning, the o-line should be that much improved. If Vick can actually be adequately protected week in and week out, than its not going to make much of a difference what defense we face, our offense will be one of the best in the league again.

Cam Newton as the first pick is a bit of a surprise, but he will put asses in the seats. He had a really great stretch of play down the line last year. It won Auburn the national championship, and he did extremely well in the tough SEC. I think he is actually ready to start immediately.

The Falcons compromised the near future, surrendering a bounty of high draft choices. Good job Browns. First Hillis on the cover of madden and now this. While they may have wanted to have a superstar guy like Julio Jones, they need to build that team first. Now they can, they are going to be full of young talent and potential. Give them 3 seasons and we might see something good coming out of Cleveland sports.

I can't say its a bad move for the Falcons. They are going to have Matt Ryan throwing to Roddy White, Julio Jones, and Tony Gonzalez. On paper, they are a super bowl favorite. They were last season, but ran into the Packers. This is a move to put them over the edge and make them super bowl winners sooner than later. This also puts a tremendous amount of pressure for Julio Jones to live up to the expectations set upon him.

The Chris Ponder pick was a bit confusing, but The Vikings needed a QB. Joe Webb, isn't going to lead them anywhere. Why they like Ponder more than Gabbert though, I'm not sure.

The 8th Circuit granted the stay, which reinstates the lockout, but only long enough for them to make a ruling on the merits. Staying an injunction pending a review on the merits isn't that unusual.

EDIT: Actually, what they did was grant a temporary one and will hear arguments on where a longer one should be issued pending a ruling.

Rams
Vikings

And other teams that people like or want. I know there's plenty.

Okay to start a disclaimer, I'm no guru and can't predict this are only team draft lists and several opinions.

Now onto Summaries:

CAROLINA PANTHERS

1. Panthers- Cam Newton. QB/Auburn
1(65) Panthers- Terrell McClain DL/South Florida
33(97) Panthers(Compensation Pick)- Sione Fua DL/Stanford
1(98) Brandon Hogan DB/West Virginia
1(132) Kealoha Pilares WR/Hawaii
1(166) Lawernce Wilson LB/UConn
38(203) (Compensation Pick)- Zachary Williams OL/Washington St.
41(244) (Compensation Pick)- Lee Ziemba OL/Auburn

The Draft will take on the name or memory in the pick of the First Round. Carolina is under a new regime and earned the First Pick in this years draft the old fashioned way...by going 2-14. But in the need of infusion of talent, flare and a Quarterback it seemed as if they were forced into the pick of Cam Newton to be their QB of the future. But time will tell if the move will pay off. Even with the Emergence of Quarterbacks, especially in the NFC south, Fist year quarterbacks have problems. There is a debate still of whether Jimmy Clausen, Matt Moore or Newton will start on day one, but in all likelyhood Newton will start on day 1, unless he has a horrible preseason. And the fight is already underway for a Number 2 jersey. The actual number 2, Clausen is not willing to give it up. Most outlets give Carolina a C in questioning the pick of Newton.

What does help is a stronger running game, and Jonathan Stewart ain't no slouch.
What doesn't lacking a second rounder thanks to New England.

Simon Fua was a good deal to fit a dire need in the defensive line punctured last year.

Either way, Newton is the Coin, Success means Carolina is back on Track, Bust...Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney better have a good travel agent. Like Baltimore to Indy good.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

5. Cardinals- Patrick Peterson DB/LSU
6(38) Cardinals- Ryan Williams RB/Virginia Tech
5(69) Cardinals- Robert Housler TE/Florida Atlantic
6(103) Sam Acho- OLB/Texas
5(136) Anthony Sherman RB/UConn
6(171) Quan Sturdivant LB/North Carolina
19(184) (From Bucs Through Eagles)- David Carter DT/UCLA
46(249) (Compensation Pick)- Demarco Sampson WR/San Diego St.

The NFC West is lucky for the Lockout, because Philadelphia we've found a buyer for Kevin Kolb. The Arizona Cardinals have discovered something, they don't suck and Patrick Peterson makes them stronger, BUT they have a power vacum at QB. People have been drafting QB's as if it were Apple Fanatics at the launch of the iPad 3, but not the Cardinals. They've drafted everything but a QB BECAUSE there is a major veteran surpluss, if trades and free agency started tomorrow the Cardinals could pick from Kevin Kolb, Marc Bulger, Matt Hasselbeck(Not really), Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer and etc.

So with that knowledge in mind the Cardinals took what is considered the best player in the draft with the No. 5 pick in Patrick Peterson. And has challenged their backfield of Hightower to compete with newcomers Ryan Williams and Anthony Sherman(Better for special teams). Sturdivant was expected to be a higher pick, but the QB hunt led to a surpluss at the top (we'll get to that later). His instincts are very good. Acho will need time to develop his pass rush skills.

The Cardinals Draft looks Solid.

Seattle Seahawks

The price we must pay for being able to troll the league last year. If we hadn't won the division we would be picking around 8th. Alas, twas not to be. Ah well, we'll always have your BeastQuake, Marshawn.

Perceived team needs: Um, anywhere except TE? QB (No one is sold on Whitehurst yet), OL (Just think of what Marshawn could do if started ragdolling defenders AFTER the line of scrimmage!), DL (Our best D-lineman is an RFA and is no guarantee to come back), and CB (Go away Kelly Jennings) are the most notable.

1 (25) James Carpenter, tackle, Alabama.
3 (75) John Moffitt, guard, Wisconsin.
4 (99) K.J. Wright, linebacker, Mississippi State.
4 (107) Kris Durham, wide receiver, Georgia.
5 (154) Richard Sherman, defensive back, Stanford.
5 (156) Mark LeGree, safety, Appalachian State.
6 (173) Byron Maxwell, special teamer, Clemson.
7 (205) Lazarius Levingston, defensive tackle, LSU.
7 (242) Malcolm Smith, linebacker, USC.

Horrible Analysis: Wow, did the lockout play havoc with this draft or what? I'm convinced that loltastic Ponder pick at 12 (among others) was because of players not being able to get traded or signed.

In related news, Kevin Kolb was placed on suicide watch during the Draft.

But you want my take on the Seahawks draft. And the answer is... I don't know.

Grade: Incomplete, C- if you held a gun to my head.

The one thing I DID like about Seattle's draft is that it showed we had a plan. Rather than randomly throwing darts at Best Player Available our front office said, "We will upgrade our O-line and with it our offense." I like that the O-line isn't going to be treated as 4 random bodies plus Russell Okung. We will be meaner, we will be more physical.
Richard Sherman is probably my favorite pick in the draft. He is a relative newcomer to cornerback, switching from wide receiver after his sophomore year I believe. He shows good playmaking skills and aggressiveness and could round into a solid starting CB within two years if he continues to learn.

Now on to everything else. After hearing your name get called in the first round, when your college coach sits there with an expression of, "...huh," it will raise a lot of eyebrows. I know James Carpenter's selection had me saying, "who?" I know rumors had him and Kris Durham both pegged as late fast risers, but with both Gabe Carimi and Derek Sherrod available the Seahawks set themselves up for a lot of second-guessing.

But that's okay, Tom Cable (our new O-line coach) will just slap everyone who disagrees. Too soon?

And I don't know why we waited until the 7th to pull the trigger on a defensive lineman.

Comments from the Seahawks GM suggest that they will be active in free agency for a QB, likely as a one or two-year stopgap. If it's not resigning Hasslebeck, maybe Carson Palmer is in play.

In short, a draft that leads to a lot of criticism. But the tone of the draft leads to hope that this plan Pete Carroll and John Schneider have will bear fruit, and hopefully sooner rather than later. Besides, 2012 is another good year for QBs with Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, Landry Jones, and Nick Foles potentially available. We can get our QB of the future then, right?

(For the younger readers, a "record store" was a building that you had to go to when you wanted to buy music.)

(For the younger readers, "buying music" was the way we acquired it, since we couldn't just… you know what, let's just get back to the Bowen song. Stupid kids, you ruin everything.)

2(99) K.J. Wright- LB/Mississippi St.
10(107) (From Lions)- Kris Durham- WR/Georgia

39(242)(Compensation Pick)- Malcom Smith OLB/USC

Like the Panthers, the only thing that will tell if this was a good draft for Seattle will be time. If you are an NFL Draft Analyst named Mel Kiper Jr. however, Time has no meaning, this draft was not good.
Thank God I'm not Mel Kiper Jr. Or Trent Dilfer who said that Hasselbeck won't return to Seattle. You know what else Dilfer said, that Sam Bradford would be a bad Quarterback. 111189.gif down.gif FAIL.

Other analysts had one word to summarize this draft.

Reach.

Carpenter was considered a Reach by experts because Gabe Carimi was still on the board, however it was the guard next to him that they liked at Wisconsin and denied the Packers who rumored to have wanted Carpenter. And it looks like the failed objective was trying to trade out and down. But Seattle does have a need at QB and while Locker wound up at Number 8, Andy Dalton was still in range. But this is another team that could be in the market if Hasselbeck is out. The reasoning for beefing up the Offensive line in any situation are still well founded. Kris Durham could be considered a reach because many teams were probably not seeing him until the 6th round, but from the position in which he was taken wide recievers were coming off the boards.

Either way good or bad at the time it looked like a strange draft. It certainly didn't help Seattle when the draft picks were used the previous season. At least they still have New Orleans.
