Tonight I'm watching news coverage of the situation in Baltimore, and it's difficult. It's depressing. It's sad to see one of America's great cities in so much turmoil.
I'm hoping that the situation can improve. From the way things have erupted, it's evident that there has been a lot of anger that has been boiling for a while now, and it has finally burst. It seems very much like Ferguson. The sad thing is, when anger boils over, along with those seeking to voice their opinion and send a message, others decide to take advantage of the situation and riot, loot and burn things.
I've always been an optimist. Even when the situation is dire. That's why tonight, and into the future, I'm hoping. I'm hoping so much that the city can calm itself. That people out in the streets will drop the rocks, and the bricks and the flames and pick up ballots and petitions and a microphone at their local city meetings.
I'm hoping that the police, that the city itself, will understand the frustration and show their understanding of that frustration. That they will protect the city but at the same time know that there is a severe level of anger and mistrust. My hope is that they will make a change, reach out to the community and dedicate themselves to improving their relationships.
Back in the Ferguson thread, the topic had came up, about anger in the community, about the relationships with law enforcement, and how strained it is in some cities. I understand the difficulty that exists. Making changes to our society is not easy, what the nation is going through right now isn't easy, however, being the optimist that I am, I believe that things can get better. I believe that things can change for a brighter future.
It's going to take more than one person. It's not going to happen through violence, fires and people being hurt. It's going to happen when the people come together, city officials, law enforcement and the public from every background come together and truly listen and understand each other.
Is it going to happen? I don't have a crystal ball. I don't. As the fire bellows from Baltimore, it doesn't look like it will happen over night. But I remain hopeful that over time, peace will be brought back and with that a new opportunity to make a better city, state and country. As it says in the United States constitution, "a more perfect union."
