Consider me an exception. In comparison to Shirou x Rin, I see very little value in Shirou x Saber, even with the romance in UBW being as...mediocrely done as it has been. Though take this with a grain of salt, as it's important to keep in mind that I've only seen Fate/Zero and the currently airing UBW adaptation. All I know about Shirou x Saber is the little teases that happened in the first half of UBW, and the basic idea behind Saber's development through the ship.

 

Makes sense, romance really isn't the focus of UBW unlike Fate and even HF. 

 

 

 

 

Actually, I thought Shirou's confession scene was one of the really well-handled scenes in the romance. It was completely in-character for Shirou to handle the situation like that, and the scene itself was pretty well done. It's the actual build-up of the relationship over the first half of the series that needed improving.

 

 

In the VN there is a lot of banter between Shirou and Rin, in the anime they toned it down because they really wanted to focus on the fact that Shirou's messed up and couldn't act like a normal person during most of the time

Rin has more presence in the vn, after shiro.
I think only in fate route she doesn't have that big presence.

If I'm not mistaken, shiro already like rin even before the even of the three route happen.
The same goes with rin. I think that's why romance doesn't get much attention in ubw route.

I don't know... The confession personally left me rather cold. I wasn't blind to all the buildup that was given during the first half of UBW, but I'll agree with you on the fact that that needed improvement. That's prob the reason that it was out of all a sudden to me. I was also bothered by the fact that they were taking their time to sit on a rock when Saber has just taken hostage... Couldn't their have been a better timing for that confession? Sorry, I'm being a little bit bias with that I'm not a big fan of Rin's tsundere side (I'm iffy with tsunderes in general, so yeah). I'm looking forward to her role in Heaven's Feel Route though! Very touching to see her fighting for her little sister.

And in the end, romance doesn't really matter in Fate/Stay Night anyways. It hard to take it seriously, even OkabexKurise from Steins;Gate.

It get explain in the heaven feel route, I think.

I think romance is important in f/sn. If not, the heroine from each route will not play as love interest.

Exactly. The fact that the MC can end up with any girl kind of kills my motivationto ship anything seriously XD

She play big role in there because she's the big sister of the heroine of the route (spoiler).

I think if Ilya route happen, I think the only heroine that play important role is saber, because of her conection with Ilya parent. Rin will get shaft, sakura will get even more irrelevant. I think the name for heaven feel will gifted to Ilya route and sakura will get another name, perhaps night.

It kind of like how arcueid and ciel don't play/irrelevant in the other side of moon scenario(?) from tsukihime.

It's not like there was anything else they could do at the time. They needed a moment to recuperate (particularly Rin). It's entirely human, and pretty understandable.

The bad timing was kind of the point, though. It was not a confession-like confession at all. It wasn't led into, it wasn't timed the best. Shirou wasn't trying to make an impression, or to get a reaction out of her, or hell, even to confess his feelings. He just stated a fact: he had fallen for Rin. It was nontraditional and unromantic as hell, but that's Shirou. He doesn't care about appearances, or being romantic, or making an impression, or even properly expressing his feelings. He was just stating a fact, and probably didn't even realize the implications of what he'd just said until after Rin reacted. And I love that. It's a refreshing take on a confession scene, even if it didn't have the best foundation building up to it in previous episodes.

 

...Wait...are you saying Okabe x Kurisu didn't work in Steins;Gate? But that's... that's one of the best romance subplots I've seen. Hell, I'd even say the singular best.
