Whether or not Karin is the mom is completely irrelevant, if you ask me. This is all forced tension for the sake of creating any drama. Whether Sakura or Karin, Gaiden will end with a happy SS family.

Apparently in China a pairings popularity poll was made.( not sure if this is old news)
SS placed 9th with 12,426 votes, NS placed 18th with 9,926 votes, while NH placed 43rd with 6,828 votes. I'm not surprised that SS got the most votes, because lots of people seem to favor the tragedy of the ship, but I am a bit surprised to see that NS is still heavily favored, even though it's not canon.
I mean the pairings are less than three thousand votes apart.
This poll is huge, with lots of anime, it not only contains hinted at pairings, but crack pairings like GrayLu, KikiyoxSesshomaru, and many more.

Awkward to see InuyashaXKikiyo beating Kagome but the endgame was...Yeah...
That's pretty humorous. To be in the top 20 while competing with other anime is pretty good for NS.
But you know, it beat NH. So it's like one way or another, NS is going to beat one or two. In Japan, it beat both of them by not being in the worst list. How about that.
