well i know im a bit in the minority here and some of you may be surprised at this But Im agaisnt a mosque being built near ground zero.
Now before you totally blow your mind over this hear my reasoning.
I have nothing against muslim, and though im a fimr supporter of israel i believe that the muslim world has it within its power to insure that peace reigns if it can get the small but violent and loud minority of extremists under control.
Now in regards to this issue, the problem to me is not that a mosque is near ground zero. As I understand it the building in question is alreayd used as one. this is not an issue to me and I can see a picture of solidarity and tolerance with it there.
butt he issue at hand for me is that the supporters want to take this historic building and rebuild it into a large fancy mosque with all sorts of bells and whistles on it.
right now the building is a tasteful and normal house of worship. But with this plan it would become a large overbearing symbol of muslim worship and this is in bad taste to me.
To me its the equivalent of building a Nazi memorial right on top of Auschwitz, or a KKK center near a center of black civil rights. It falls along the same lines as those lunatics that protest at the funerals of service men and women because they say that america tolerates gays. Hell it would be analogous to building a statue of the enola gay near hiroshima and Nagasaki complete with Atomic bombs.
building this mosque in the form planned by its supporters would be a slap in the face to those who lost loved ones on 9/11. It would be a very bad decision and in bad taste.
I want to emphasize that for effect. In the form planned by its supporters not that its a mosque, but that they plan on making it a highly visual statement that it is a clear muslim symbol of worship.
and this is supposed to be built near the site of one of the worst attacks perpetrated by muslim terrorists in the history of the united states.
Lets be real here. if the Israelis began to build a big fantastic looking synagogue near the temple mount or a similar muslim site. Theyre would be utter and furious outrage on many sides.
this wouldnt make it any more right to build it, but the arguments we'd see would be the same.
I think personally the supporters should re-look at this plan and seek to have the building quietly and carefully restored and rebuilt as a respectful house of worship with which the muslim world can show it is ready to stand side by side in peace.
But dont try and justify building what amounts to a bright shiney tackey muslim chuck-e-cheese near a solemn site like ground zero. it would undermine the very peace they want, and would raise a big fat target on the mosque itself.
Ok, I nearly

with your statement catsi, but after counting to 10, I can see where you're going. *inhales* *exhales* all right,so what you're saying is that you fear of it being too pompous and a bit over-the-top design?? Ok, that's fine. I think that you want us to create some sort of solidarity/tribute to the victims alongside with building it? y'know, creating something like a memorial plaque to them around the Mosque area?? that's fine. If you agree to that, If I were there I'd be more than happy to oblige. I deeply respect & sympathize for the victims. I'm glad that you're responding in a very calm manner with very good stuff to back it up.
@Insurrection: yeah, I know but a lot of people see you (America) that way. Why else do you guys get a lot of immigrants?
EDIT: LOL, I just realized my post is the 1000th one.
