just cause you feel that way doesnt mean everyone else will.

i like it. so maybe they will to, maybe not. but everyone should give it a chance at least once.

Yeah I understand merryGOflava but he DID give it a chance and it didn't appeal to him end of story. What's important is just what you said " give it a chance first"

QUOTE (Derock @ Jul 19 2011, 07:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Here's what I feel about the Big 3:

Naruto: The reason why I love this series out of the 3 is not because of the artwork (how realistically Kishimoto drew his characters and settings from a little sloppy in the beginning toward beautiful and extraordinary of facial expressions and awesome sceneries in the present) but of the complelling and complex storyline, which is sort of being in the drama department.

Bleach: I did like Bleach a bit but I couldn't get into it until recently. Don't get me wrong though, Bleach has some awesome battles like Dragon Ball but it has tons of characters (and even more now) that I sort of can't get into that much. (Though I do love Orihime! <3 )

Now One Piece is the series I really don't understand in terms of popularity and its randomness. It has a great premise (young boy who eaten a devil fruit that gives him rubber-like powers who wants to become King of the Pirates by searching for One Piece) but then it starts to fall flat because Oda wants it to keep going and going like Energizer batteries. And the artwork is very unappealling, which make it is so freaking random to read.

I don't know how it become so popular in Japan in sales yet they do not milk it like they did with Naruto in terms of marketing, especially in the video game department. For example: while Naruto gets 1-3 games max being release or announce each year, following the conquest of the Dragon Ball series, and Bleach possibly get 1 or 2, One Piece doesn't follow that for some reason and this year, the series finally have a new game in development which probably will not hit internationally especially in the US because the series is not coming back (While the manga is still running here, the anime currently isn't airing on any TV channel, no available merchandise on the marketing department which Naruto already trumped other series in the anime/manga advertisements with clothing appeal, video games, trading cards, and more).

THAT is exactly my order of preference Derock biggrin.gif as for why One Piece is so popular in Japan I can't say. headscratch.gif but apparently it's also read by adults and the sales are extremely high: over two hundred thirty million sold in Japan. but when I think about it, that's sales not really about personal preference sales and preferences are different concepts So it may be extremely popular in Japan but that does not mean it's the absolute number one favorite. But that's just my opinion, just saying despite One Pieces gigantic sales doesn't mean it's every reader's favorite. They may buy it because they like and enjoy reading it, but may love something else over it

why do ppl keep saying one piece art looks weird??? it looks like fairy tail, just a little bit different.

Good question. IS One Piece's art style unappealing? confused.gif I mean I know its your own opinion so I'm not judging and besides I know some people that say they don't like its art either but I recall that it generally got positive reviews for the art style and the basic stucture is like Dragon Ball and people didn't complain about ITS art style so I'm just wondering mellow.gif personally speaking I think it's okay not a fan of the look but can't say it's bad an in between feeling for me

What's weird is that I don't like One Piece style but I love Fairy Tail XD I think there must be a big enough difference for some people. At least I think most of the characters in Fairy Tail, or at least the main ones, have really interesting designs and are eye appealing. I generally don't think the same about One Piece. Course that doesn't mean its not a good story.

@ phantom:

i know he gave it a chance i mean other ppl. cause he kept saying not to bother with it.

i think OP art fits with the story. its a very good story, but there is also alot of comedy, although just because it seems that way doesn't mean there isn't any serious moments, there are alot of touching moments in OP. i guess its a take it or leave it art style.

oda's art seems warm and bright to me. with all the interesting looking characters.

It's visually unappealing to me as well, and there's too much female character fanservice for my taste. I'm just not that into Oda's brand of humor. It just isn't deep enough a story to appeal to me either. But I can explain why it's wildly popular in Japan- from an explanation from a new Japanese friend of mine who is in her 30's and likes One Piece- it's the lighthearted humor, including the character designs. It just happens to fill that niche, a certain type of Japanese humor that tends to become popular in tough economic times- it fits the modern take on that kind of humor very well. Oda started One Piece just as their economic crash hit rock bottom in Japan, they still haven't truly recovered from that downturn, so One Piece serves as something that cheers them up.

Bleach, after the beginning arcs, tends to turn battles into a bit much of sheer "badassery" displays for my taste (which is why Dragonball never appealed to me), and the female character fanservice is enough that it annoys me as does the common type way Ichigo's father is written- it was a very common way fathers were written in anime and manga from the 1980's and 90's. I didn't like it even back then and now that I'm in my 40's I'm just really tired of seeing it.

I liked Fairy Tale at first, but then the female character fanservice went way up and that seriously cooled my interest, which is a shame, because there's enough a story to be appealing without it- especially with Ezra's backstory.... I'm just really disappointed that the story went there.

Naruto, from the "Search for Tsunade" arc onward, just happens to hit all the points for me that makes an appealing story. It's just a near perfect story to me- even from the perspective of reading many hundreds of manga stories over the last nearly 30 years. Kishimoto's writing just really impresses me. He's truly writing as if he was bringing this grand novel series to visual life.... And this I think is the big key to it's continuing high popularity world wide. Naruto, although it has moments of slapstick humor, and plenty of battles, is a true "graphic novel" in the deepest sense of the phrase.

Hmm...as far as the female fanservice in Bleach goes, I guess I'm a little on the fence. Large breasts don't really seem to be a rarity in manga/anime, but I do feel Kubo takes it over the top with some of the characters. I recall my sister giving up on Bleach altogether after seeing Matsumoto Rangiku for the first time. I guess I don't really mind it too much if I like the character enough, like I do with Orihime and Neliel. I guess my bottom line is that I try to not Kubo's style with some of his females get in the way of/push me to like some of the characters.

As for Isshin, I don't really know enough about 80's/90's manga/anime to really know the character, but he did sort of annoy me at first. Though I think his general silliness only made his appearance during the Arrancar arc that much more dramatic. happy.gif

I agree I Love Naruto for its epic story/plot lines, it has amazing fights, and I enjoy the comedy and romance! wow.png Now I never criticize any art style be cause it is unique to every Artist but I LOVE Kishimoto's just cause it has my preference (the only ones that freak me out are some josei art styles they're just weird) anyways by fan service do you partially mean the Breast enlargement? mellow.gif I personally find it unrealistic(although manga is unrealistic to begin with) I mean does any Girl or woman in real life grow like that? dry.gif It makes girls self conscious and can be taken as degrading. Other than that I won't complain because that's how the artists want to portray their characters and we can't do anything about that and some series I like do that anyway such as HSDK. As Boom...Winning said its not uncommon to do that

I can respect that as a Women's Equality supporter biggrin.gif I like fairy tail though but not because of the fan service it's because of the magic. It gives me A Harry Potter like nostalgia biggrin.gif

I don't mind the fanservice in either bleach or fairy tail. While in fairy tail it is especially obvious, I admit, it's not like there isn't fanservice for girls (what with Gray constantly stripping, etc.). Same with bleach, Kubo definitely delivers fanservice to the girls, what with all of the good looking guys in the story that are constantly in the various color pages/spreads.

Well of course XD but there are plenty of others too (Byakuya for example, and Renji!). I think Kubo has a really nice art style. But what I mean is, the fanservice can go both ways. I don't see why girls have to get all upset about seeing women with big breasts yet probably drool over the bods of good looking men at the same time XD

That's not a hyperbole in the least rolleyes.gif

As for your second statement, most dudes are shirtless imo equates to fan service just as busty women and skimpy outfits equate to the same type of fan service.

I will admit that Naruto seems to give the least amount of fan service out of the Big 3 in the manga (not anime), but I really wouldn't care if it did. I like Naruto and I like Fairy Tail. And it has nothing to do with fan service.

sorry but dudes without shirts doesnt seem like fanservice to me sad.gif its meh

and i think TOO much fanservice can hurt a manga. bleach doesnt have too much, nether does naruto, not even one piece has as much as fairy tail. and to me i just cant get into it because of that.

....now that i think about it....a guy saving a girl would be my fanservice biggrin.gif i'd be happy with that smile.gif

About Fairy Tail and fan servise, well, as guy I obviously don't mind it much, but I noticed how it started to take an leap, first the fan service was quite little on Fairy Tail, but then it started to get very intense, despite the fact that I kind of like fan service, I don't like when it starts to get too flashy, I like to think of fanservice as an extra, and not something that must happen all the time in order to atract the fans, but Fairy Tail still one of my favourite mangas regardless.

As for Bleach, I'm just an casual reader, so I can't really tell if there is too much fan service or not, but noticed that the art style on the manga started to look a lot more soft after the latest arc, so even if an character is well endowed, it won't show much.

Well what can you do, right? and Fairy Tail doesn't even count as excessive in the fanservice department the most extreme cases in shonen manga are of the ecchi, romance, harem genre. Those are full of panties shots, nude scenes, clothes ripping(or falling off for some physics defying reason), breast groping and ass grabbing(accidental or deliberate), loss of underwear, and the list could go on. I can understand if you're tired of fanservice but trust me Fairy Tail is not the worst one out there tongue.gif You're in for a heart attack if you read the REALLY ecchi manga heheelq7.png
