Well hope you get there soon enough! I can't wait to hear how you think it :excited:

In the meanwhile I'll read 'All quiet on the Western Front'. I read half but I cannot really get satisfied with this book.....

What do you mean with that? You don't get satisfied because you want more or because it isn't good enough?

And Steppenwolf when?

And Steppenwolf when?

I mean I cannot really get into the 'All quiet in the Western Front'. There are two reasons. 1. My expectations were too high. My colleague said it was one of the top three books he read in his lifetime. It might be a good book but saying it's one of the best he's ever read is saying a bit too much. Especially, when he's such a bookworm. 2. Not detailed in historical parts. This book is said to be one of the most important books to read regarding WW1. So I expected it to have more historical details. Instead it's more like a diary of the main character's military everyday life with his friends.

It's my fault to expect too much so there is nothing wrong with the book itself I guess.

I still have ten books in the bookshelf I plan to read so you've got to wait until I get to Steppenwolf :hm:

I still have ten books in the bookshelf I plan to read so you've got to wait until I get to Steppenwolf :hm:

1) Isn't that subjetive, tho? He could have mean to the feelings it gave him. I got traumatized when I read The Antichrist of Nietzsche. No other book had left me as how I was after reading it. I literally felt pain. There are a lot of factors to consider but if I would chose a book it would be that even tho if I read 100000 more books. 2) I understand that, but saying that is important to WW1 doesn't necesarilly means "historical details". As you say, isn't more about what is to be in the action? The psychological side and all that kitten. I didn't read it so I'm just speculating, tho.

1. He said it gave him feel feelings but I felt nothing from it. Yes, it's subjective. And my thoughts on what HIS subjective view on the top three book will be didn't match with how he REALLY felt them. That's why I said it's my fault to expect too much and not the book's fault.

2. The things written in that book was something that could have occurred in any other war. It's just about military like. They had no explanation of 'because event A happened between countries X and Y we had to fight troop B' or anything of the like. I don't know how this military life and the fights occurring in this battle connects with the bigger picture of WW1. I'll say it again, it's my fault for having too much expectations and not this book's fault.

Nope. I have reading discussions with our company CEO because he loves books too and our next theme is WW1. So I'm just reading books that has something to do with it.

I see. Well, if that is your purpose, I'm afraid to tell you that's not the very right book. I liked the insightful impressions about war and it's good for you to think about how stupid the reasoning of war is. But it's not much of a factual book, as I said, it's uneventful, if you're going to make a summary of it, it ends up being very short. So it's more useful if you want to understand what it's like to be living in a war, not how the WW1 itself was or any political deepening.
