Here comes the Boom 7/10

Let me preface this review by saying that this movie can either be light-hearted and goofy or like teeth being pulled out, as someone who hasn't fervently followed Kevin James' career I could see it going either way. It's not a good film, but it's a nice film. The movie is about a demoralized once-great-teacher (Kevin James) who takes it upon himself to try to raise 48k to try to save a school's music program and in turn his friend's (Henry Winkler) job. There's some bits of dialogue and moments that you kind of have to swallow as the truth in order for this movie to have any impact.

such as (real spoilers are in here) --Click here to view--
A school allowing a group of high schoolers to take a trip to a UFC ppv.

48k magically not only saving a program but the entire school, including renovations to the school and new instruments for an entire classroom of about 30 students.

Some of the moments are a bit heavy-handed to push the plot along. There's a moment in which the school principal is so over-the-top foaming-at-the-mouth hateful of the music program, when asked to make some cuts to the sports program, that the dialogue comes off as being callous for the sake of being callous instead of someone who believably has no choice but to cut the music program as a result of educational budget cuts.

With that being said, the movie was still enjoyable. If you liked the trailer like I did then you'll like the movie too.

Just to note though. In a movie about someone who's never had MMA training fighting his way through the ranks (short though they may be in the movie) the bigger issues it presents understandably and unfortunately takes a back-seat to the comedy of the premise. The major problems the movie brings to light are the questions of what are the possible failings of today's school system: budget cuts, whether disillusioned teachers are a result of a system that doesn't help them or if they are the cause of a stagnating educational system, the pace of studies for the wide spectrum of students, the number of student to teacher ratio, these are all present but only shown on a surface level. I hope someone makes a movie about that.

The Raid: Redemption 8/10
This movie is a blitzkrieg of martial arts action, some of the best I've seen in a long time. Super-crazy, so crazy that it sucks you in. I was out of my chair shouting like I would be while watching a UFC match or football game. The film is about a SWAT-team that infiltrates an apartment complex to apprehend some drug/crime lords. Unfortunately the entire building is occupied primarily by their henchmen. The main protagonist, a rookie on the team, has an ulterior motive for going in which plays for a bit of drama, but this thing is just from start to finish a shot of adrenaline. I highly recommend this for those who liked films like Ong Bak or Crank.

Dark Shadows 6/10
I've only ever watched an episode of the original series this was based off of and obviously never felt a need to watch it again, so I went into this with no bias one way or another at the approach Burton and Depp took with it. That being said, the film plays like any other one where the vampire is the good guy. He's immortal and he's sad because of it. Then that's just layered with the "Ooh look, Tim and Johnny are soooo weird." Tim Burton's production value is as good as it's always been, but there isn't much feeling in this movie, it didn't feel like it needed to be told. Maybe I'm just tired of vampires or maybe I seriously need to write Tim and Johnny a divorce letter, or both.

The Dictator 7/10
Good, dumb, and goofy fun about a dictator who becomes a fish out of water when he visits New York to sign something that'll prevent war, is kidnapped, and has his identity stolen.

I've always liked Sasha Baron Cohen's non-extreme gross-out humor in his other works, so it was nice to get a film where it only played a small role in the comedy. If the first part of that sentence pertains to you, then this is a winner.

Battleship 3/10
I know, I know, what did I expect right? Well, I like Transformers 1&3 for what they are: popcorn, summer-flicks. I don't expect any level of complexity or oscar-worthy dialogue, but man, this film is fowl. It's almost three hours long. Why? Nothing of any importance to the story happens until what felt like an hour into the movie. And there isn't even anything that blows up in that time. This thing is boooooooring! There's a segment where we basically watch someone play the game battleship, and I'd be fine with it, as this is based off of the board game of the same name, if it were only a minute or two, but it's like 15 minutes. Way too long. I can't remember if this sucker bombed or not but I hope that it did so that studios will learn there lesson and not make anymore movies based off of boardgames. Yes, I know there are already several in the pipelines.

Taylor Kitsch, every mainstream movie you have been in has had abysmal writing, so I'll kind of give you the benefit of the doubt, but either hire a new agent or shoot for lower budget films, you'll do less damage that way.

Skyfall - 6/10

Let me start off by saying I loved Casino Royale with Daniel Craig, loved it, and while it was missing elements of the classic Bond films, I looked at it as more of a Bond: year one story, when he was more rough around the edges, less refined, essentially: how did his actions first play out in all the standard Bond settings we've come to know. I think it's one of the better "reboots" we've had to date. I hated Quantum of Solace and thought it was the super-long original ending to Casino Royale that the director wisely decided to cut and the studio stupidly decided to make into a separate movie.

Skyfall scored a less than average score because with the exception of a few minor moments at MI6 and some nostalgic winks at the audience, this film is not even remotely close to being a James Bond movie. It started off promising and then just flatlined.

It's been about five years since the last Bond film and Daniel Craig is in his mid-forties now, and no amount of muscles will hide that, so the writers decide to deal with it in the film as well. Bond is aging, and he may no longer be at the top of his game, his antagonist in this film is of the same ilk: an aged, disillusioned ex-agent, played by Javier Bardem. This actually would've been kind of a cool journey for Bond if it hadn't been abandoned altogether half-way through the film. The movie becomes more about Bond's past, his parents, his orphanage, his home, and M, played by Dame Judi Dench than about him overcoming his doubt. In fact the film itself feels like there were two different films at one point and they just cut both in half and copy and pasted them together because Javier's villain is made out to be this super-intelligent and patient villain in the first half of the film, waiting years plotting his plan and mapping everything out, never letting his obsession overrule his planning, then in the second half he becomes this stupid, idiotic, overly-obsessed weirdo.
His death scene was so unintentionally hilarious that half the audience was laughing.
I just did not like it. And I really wanted to. This film is a victim of it's name. If this were simply an action thriller not connected to Bond at all, I might like it, but sadly it's 007. Simply put: nothing to see here, move along.

Little Shop Of Horrors: The Director's Cut (1986/2012): 10/10
I love this Movie but I love it even more with the finally dug up Original Ending, it gives this Movie the depressing abeit goofy finale it deserves (people that hate this ending seem to not realize that it's a Faustian tale).

DJango Unchained (2012): 9/10
Classic Quentin Tarantino for better or for worse. The near 3 Hour run time is undeserved however and the Movie drags a bit especially towards the Final Act.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 9/10
I haven't read the book since about 3rd grade, so I can't quite remember what was or wasn't in the books from the film. The movies is a little long in the tooth at the beginning, but I don't mind as much as PJ's King Kong boat scene/dino island as I liked these characters. I especially liked Sylvester McCoy as Radagast. It made me want to watch the LOTR series again. There are some things that are like... "Eh?" For example:

Just being silly really. Spoilers though. --Click here to view--
Why did Thorin, instead of you know going to get his butt handed to him by the White Orc, not first try and help his guys back onto solid ground?

"Oh, you're dangling off a tree and about to fall? Two of you are simply holding on by Gandalf's staff? Sure I can't help. But let me go deal with my daddy issues first."

I know this point was brought up in the LOTR series too. I know the birds are noble and not to be considered steeds, but seriously... they couldn't land them closer to the Lonely Mountain? LMAO! They're jerks!

This is just me being more silly than serious.

Question: Are they going to re-release the original LOTR:FOTR with Martin Freeman in the flashback scene? tongue.gif Milk that sucker for all it's worth!

Also, I haven't been able to get "Misty Mountain Cold" out of my head. Is it just me or does that sound like a beer?

Les Misérables 7/10
This is a musical about a man named Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), who was jailed for stealing bread for his starving nephew. When he is released he is bitter and a thief. The movie is supposed to be a journey of redemption, as there's a few minor wrongs he's done and then a major one (but that would be spoiling it).

I'll say this, I've never been a big opera fan, where everything is sung. It's exhausting as an audience member. I thought this would be a normal musical where there is spoken dialogue and characters only sang when they reached the pinnacle of emotion. So going into this it already wasn't my cup of tea. But I will say while she dropped it a few times, Anne Hathaway's rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" blew me away. Every time I'd ever heard the song, it was always sung pretty, and it really isn't a pretty song. It's sorrowful, angry, painful, and at times bittersweet. There's strong music here and compelling character work by Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, but I really didn't care for any of the stuff with the revolution in the second half of the film. What was more interesting to me was Jean Valjean's journey and his game of cat and mouse with an overzealous officer trying to capture him, not the revolution or the love story.

The best thing about this movie, was a single-light lit framed shot of Anne Hathaway, who sold all her hair and has no choice but to sell herself to help pay for her child's care, is crying in the dark as a man, who's paid for her services gets off of her.

This movie clocks in at about 2.5 hours, so make sure you've got time to spare for it. Is it worth it? I really liked the first half of the film and kind of snored through the second half.

Superman vs the Elite 8/10
I really liked this. It shows that a Superman battle in a movie can display how strong he is and how smart he is.

Django Unchained - 10/10

Best movie I saw in 2012, topping out TDKR, Looper, Avengers, Cabin in the Woods, The Grey, and others. Just...highly, highly recommended. Hilarious, tense, and just plain great.

There's an interesting theory going around, especially the music choice during that scene.

Thorin is filled with Dwarvish Pride, something that Gandalf continuously points out.

We know that Sauron helped forge the Dwarven rings, which Thror possessed and influenced him to be super greedy. Now, since Thorin is the current leader of the Durin Dwarves, it's possible that he has this same ring.

Take his Pride, the Nazgul-like music that plays when he gets up from the tree, and the fact that he has a Ring of Power, it's possible that he's been influenced subtly.

Now, this isn't a strong theory, because I think either the book or the LOTR appendices mentioned that they lost Thror's Ring of Power during Smaug's attack.

But, if they don't mention that little factoid in the movie, I would accept that his Ring of Power may've played a part.

Also, the end of Les Mis had me in tears. Those last 2 songs really ended so bittersweet....

Justice League DOOM (2012): 9/10
The cast of Justice League Unlimited with Tim Daily as Superman and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Hal Jordan have great chemistry in what feels a multi-parter of the cartoon and I mean that in a good way.

I could see the theory about the ring being true... if a bit of a stretch, but again, I'm being more silly than serious.

As for the ending of Les Misérables:
And I'll admit his death tugged at my feelings, but I was mostly un-invested in anyone other than Jean Valjean and Fantine in the film. Also isn't it good to know that if you die in France, you go to an even bigger France! smile.gif

Yeah, I just thought it was an interesting theory to share.

Les Mis Spoilers --Click here to view--
Yeah, it was mostly Fantine and Jean Valjean that really tugged at my heart strings. Though, I was also touched by Eponine's solo, mostly because I've been in the same situation. Gavroche and the ABC's deaths, too.

Though, to be honest, I probably would've left during the uprising part if it wasn't for me wondering why Valjean doesn't just go all Wolverine-berzerk rage all over and cut the movie by 3/4s. laugh.gif

I told my friend that it's possible Logan's just going through a phrase, Anger therapy via music and singing! a_thumbs.gif

The Amazing Spider-Man:

I'd rate it 8/10. Andrew Gairfield was not that bad playing Spiderman. Actually really good. But I found him a bit too cool to play Peter Parker and on top of that, though he was too damn hilarious, I found that one scene with the thief and the extreme taunting a bit too overboard than the real Spiderman. And I will never understand why he revealed his identity to Gwen Stacy just like that that when he barely even knew her ... headscratch.gif

That said, maybe it's because I'm used to Tobey Maquire. I miss his acting. shamefulcry0js.gif

Silver Linings Playbook - 7.5/10

I really liked it and enjoyed the honest take on mental disorder and family relationships. Bradley Cooper did great too and abstained from the usual handsome-man thing. Funny too.

The Dark Knight Rises - 8.5/10

I did a little dark knight trilogy marathon the other day and of course ended with tdkr. I think it was on par with The Dark Knight but while approaching it from another side. It was exciting to see a villain who could actually go toe-to-toe with Batman on a physical level. Up until this point, its just been mind games (which this movie still incorporates). And the final development arc for Bruce Wayne was right to end the trilogy. It was also nice to have a larger cast with some new faces (joseph and anne, and marion) but because of this it at times got out of groove and focus.

Dredd (2012): 9/10
This movie is freaking awesome and completely makes me forget about the horrendous Stallone movie. It's obvious the film makers and stars (Especially Karl Urban who pushed for this movie to be made) are huge Judge Dredd fans and were concerned with getting everything about the Characters and the City right and they do so in spades. I can forgive the spotty CGI because they had a very limited budget what I can't forgive however is the poor acting by the usually great Lena Heady as Mama the lead Villain which knocks the score down 1.

8.5/10 - One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

Heh, an oldie (1975) but it was on my watch list and i had some time to kill. It was great and I was quickly enthralled with the bizzarre stuttering of a story taking place inside a mental institution. Jack Nicholson was of course great and weird to see him so young. The movie had you feeling the right things at the right times and it ended on a profound note.

Rurouni Kenshin, live-action version:

Probably one of the best live-action adaptations I've ever seen, ever. Although this Kenshin's more melancholic than I recall, Takeru Satoh's amazing in his ability to switch between the warm and genial, Kenshin, and the cold Battousai.

They compressed a few episodes together, but I think it worked out well, storyline-wise.

The action scenes are awesome. I can tell the actors trained ridiculously hard to carry out the excellent fight choreography. If nothing else, the fights are what should keep your attention. Minimal shaky cam, active actors participation, and it's just awesome to watch. The camera's zoomed in a little too close for my liking, though, which makes it hard to follow. Although, I guess that's how they manage to make Kenshin such a Lightning Bruiser in the movie.

Also, you got Kamen Rider Den-O fighting Kamen Rider Skull, what's not to love?! whatthekitten.gif

Sean Bean doesn't die.

10/10

Nah, in all seriousness, I grew up with this movie. So I probably have a nostalgic bias with it. That being said, it's by no means a bad movie. It's really pretty good and underrated, I think. Identifiable characters with layers (although you will not like all of them by any means, mainly Paris) and grand battle scenes carry it. It has some flaws (namely a romance subplot that could've been done better), but there's a lot to appreciate and enjoy in it.

Real score: 8/10

P.S. Sean Bean doesn't die. Just want to make it clear how amazing that is.
