Yeah, I saw the parallel too. Wan and his story acts as a foil for Korra's, though to be honest, I like Wan more than Korra.

Maybe because Korra's biggest flaw is Wan's(and Aang..any avatar tbh) strength? Wan did not like conflicts, he was a good bridge. - "Stop fighting everyone". Korra adds fuel to the fire. Example; Sending Iroh II to battle without permission was the dumbest move ever.
Instead of waging war against the North, why not tell their people what kind of man Unulaq really is? They think they're doing the right thing. Why??? She did it with Amon!

Yes, and it's probably going to be her biggest inner conflict to overcome. She needs to learn to take a step back and think logically and rationally about a situation rather than rushing in, guns drawn and fists swinging. And I totally agree that it was really stupid of her to try to recruit Iroh like that, I was actually shocked that he was going to go along with it.

I just want to say one quick thing about Asami kissing Mako (I know this was a while ago, sorry lol)—to be honest, I liked it (and was totally expecting it tbh). Only cause I shipped those two in season one, even though I knew Mako and Korra were endgame. It was pretty awkward though, lmao. I don't really blame Asami; maybe it was sort of a silly thing to do, but she can't help still having feelings for him even if he doesn't deserve them. She was emotionally weak, too.and at least she didn't kiss him when he was already dating someone else
Other than that... It was pretty stupid of the creators to do, regardless of anything else. Oh well.
Anyway.
The Avatar origins episode(s) was probably the best of LoK yet. I admit, though, that I don't really like how the Vaatu and Raava spirits look. They're sort of weird looking haha. They kind of remind me of manta rays... Also, I loved Aye-Aye (the lemur looking spirit).
I really enjoyed these two episodes. Wan is a interesting character and easy to root for, he'd have made a good protagonist in his own rite. There's just one inconstancy that is bothering me, doesn't the whole Lion Turtles granting people the ability of the elements recon on what was originally established, that man learned the elements from the dragons, badger moles, sky bison and moon respectively? What are others' thoughts on this?
I'm glad someone mentioned this because I feel like no one else noticed/cared. I browsed the LoK tag on tumblr a bit after watching the episode and I didn't see a single comment on this (though yeah, there were probably some later). I really hate when artists (including authors and stuff) aren't consistent, it's one of my pet peeves and this got me. I would have preferred they just keep the original origins of bending. This kind of reminds me of Naruto, actually:
- the source of many people's powers (chakra/bending) was explained in one way in the beginning; with Naruto, the moulding of physical and spiritual energy; Avatar, learned the elements from dragons, moon, etc.
- later on this seems to be retconned, where they get their source of powers from some all powerful beings.
- the fact that the power is then passed down genetically doesn't really make sense?? at least to me. though this was also a problem with the original explanation of the source of bending in Avatar, especially since each nation had their own elemental bending.

Anyone get the vibe that throughout the korra series, the villians are going to be mostly water benders? I mean Amon was the first, now we got Unaloq.
Anyways, since beginnings ended, when Korra flew off, did anyone think the island in the background was the lion turtle aang met before fighting Ozai? Otherwise I get the feeling Unaloq has a plan to try and become a "dark Avatar" consdiering it was that harmonial event that joined Wan and Raava together.
Also I seriously feel that Beginnings has a lot of vibes with Zelda Skyward Sword and yes Naruto.
We saw Wan's story but look at this:
In Zelda, before skyloft was created, there was a comic for the prelude to skyward sword. All the races in skyward sword lived on the ground, including a tribe of demons. Demise the leader wanted the triforce (no suprise). The demons ravaged the land. The goddess hylia, guardian of humanity and the triforce stood to stop them but could not use the master sword as she didn't possess the valor to use it. A human named Link did. Link who had commited crimes before (never mentioned its a short comic) was able to atone for them by wielding the sword. In his fight with Demise, he sealed demise away and skyloft left with the suriving humans as most were killed in the ancient war. Hylia not wanting Link's courage to vanish did 2 things, made his spirit immortal and gave up her own immortality to join him in the cycle of knowing mortality. This lead to the creation of the spirit of the champion and divine blood, inherted by link and zelda respectively. In skyward sword, 1,000 years after this comic which the game takes place, Link was reborn and as was zelda. Link is the chosen hero to wield the goddes sword (which had sealed Demise in the comic. As the game goes on, Link is revealed to have the spirit of the champion and zelda is revealed to be hylia reborn. the villian ghiram tries to revive demise but he fails. Demise comes back for a short time but is destroyed by link for good save his hate would eventually take the form of ganondorf generations later. The spirit of the goddess sword which eventually becomes the master sword, Fi, as her journey to help link, she says she would only come to know link as her master even though she would forever sleep. So see the funny thing here? Every zelda has a cycle in which evil arises, a hero would appear to save the world, sometimes with a divine power.
The spirit of the champion exists as its link reborn everytime, not always blood bound like in wind waker
the divine blood is inherited by each incarnation of zelda, etc also reborn
Ganondorf was the only initial same one throughout some of the seires (depends on which of the 3 timelines beyond OOT) but his inheritance from demise was the anger towards the gods)
and finally the spirit of the master sword is the remiants of Fi who only exists to be wielded by the incarnation of Link.
Now see how funny we can link Zelda to avatar? cycles of reincarnation, protect the world from darkness, ancient action causes future crisis for a whole different generation.
Same with Naruto. 1,000 year ago, we have the kagyua story, Sage of the 6 paths, the juubi, the angry tree, the sealing and scattering of the great power (which would be the juubi to also protect the world). Only for said ancient power now to come back and threaten the world and yeah world is threatened by it right now. origin story is very short in naruto but easily understood.
Its funny how this theme of origin and acient old threat sealed in the past comes back in the future. I don't know why but I always like this cliche story style.

I did see one person say that perhaps the Lion Turtles were the ones to give man the power of the elements, but it was the animals (and the moon), who taught them how to actually use it, like we saw Wan learning how to use his fire as an extension of his body from the dragon. That could be a possible explanation that wouldn't be totally inconsistent, but I would like for the series to actually address it to clear up any confusion. I don't know if they will though.

I don't think Unulaq will become the dark Avatar, after all he still needs a lion turtle to get the other elements.
However, I do think his spirit will merge with Vatu's, in as similar fashion Wan merged with Rava.

I think for at least half of the series, unless they do swampy water style bending next season. I wouldn't mind if they did since what it seems for most Avatar's deal with benders from their own Nations, E.G. Koyshi and Roku.

I must be out of the loop. There's going to be another season after this?

Four books in total. I wonder what they come up with next. The Avatar is about four elements and the spiritual side. That's 5, what can they do with two more?

Really? That's even more than the original Avatar, kind of upsets me because I'd rather they do something with the original series and characters, like animate the comics or something.

Well before you have a chance to get that you have to wait for the rest of this season to finish and two more after it which would make a total of 52 episodes.

Well no new episode tonight due to impending Halloween stuff, episodes resume on November 1st, kinda a good spot for a mid season break.
We got 2 episodes last week, we need to skip a week this time. The next episode "The Guide" will air on november 1st.

One step forward, hundred steps backward.

Well, in the very least Mako had the decency to break up properly before going for someone else (thank you for small favors).
Still, I can tell were this is going from an mile away. I honestly don't care anymore. Asami, you are better then this....
