How can you expect to grow if you aren't spending money? That's like thinking you're going to start up a house-cleaning business without advertising. Bad analogy, but the point is you have to spend money before you can make it.
The big question remains, how do you fix a recession if you can't spend any money?
I agree blindly throwing money into the system wont help, so maybe the money just needs to be spent wisely.

Except what does "spending money wisely" mean?

Many on the right would say that the stimulus was akin to taking $800 billion of money and setting it on fire.

yeah and bush and his two little wars in afghanistan and Iraq are at the core of that mess, along with the republican policy of no regulation of corporations which lead directly to the financing and banking mess that is a major part of it.

Yeah and the current president done a 30,000 troop surge in Afghanistan, and let's not forget how he loves flip flopping saying he'll end the war to help him win the campaign and he's doing the opposite now isn't he. kruemelmonsteryn0.gif

Gee really? How many of those people on the right in congress then went and bragged what the 800 billion gave them?

A congressman knows how to buy a yacht a secretary makes his budget.

@Uzu he was never one to say he'll end the war in Afghanistan, just Iraq, but that's not true either is it?

Yeah i remember Nancy Polosi wanted her own private jet like Air Force One during the Bush Administration. Obama said he'll in the war period, i'm not saying he won't but one has to come to a realization if the surge doesn't do any good in the long run.

Well part of money comes from paper or tree or whatever.
And oh yea, I'm pretty sure Obama was saying something about ending the war quickly, but humans say stuff just to get what they want, don't they?

Gold's a sham, should invest in it only if you have access to the 19th century.

If your afraid of inflation i suggest agriculture, considering that food prices are the first thing to rise during periods of high inflation. Gold isn't used by everybody. But food is used universally.

To answer your first question: It's not limited to this, but the government has three primary ways it can "make" money.

It can tax you. It can borrow it. It can print it.

Obama's problem on Afghanistan is that he and his allies portrayed it as the war we should have been fighting all along and that Iraq was an unneeded distraction from it. I personally believe it was a dishonest attempt to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to be able to completely rip Bush on Iraq, but without appearing weak on foreign policy. Democrats have been fighting that stereotype since Vietnam.

That said, as much as they wanted Bush to completely bomb in Iraq he doesn't now that he's in charge. It's different when they lead because if they bail and all goes to hell that defeat will be hung around their necks. Obama has a base that wants him out yesterday, but Obama doesn't want to be the one who lost the war either.

Speaking of that, anyone else find it ironic he picked Petreus? It was the right choice so I give Obama credit for making it, but it takes some gall to pick a general he and his party trashed as a liar and toady to pursue a strategy they said failed in Iraq back in 2007. Anyone remember General "Betray Us?" MoveOn has mysterious removed the add from its site. I respect Petreaus even more now because a lesser man could have easily told the President and his party to go to hell after what they did to him.

Politics as usual for Democrats Nate.

They will trash something that they viewed outside their mainstream, but when they're very political a**** need that something to save their necks they act as if all is good.

That's how business works... you need start-up money to start a business, right? Where do you get start-up money? Borrow from China, of course. kruemelmonsteryn0.gif

But if you just print too much, then inflation or hyper inflation would just occur, correct?

Come on here people, give me a break. All political parties from the beginning of the political system, in every country in the world does this. Trying to act high and mighty, and as if your political party is all sunshine and roses is a bit ridiculous.

which is why I jokingly support my names in a hat theory of voting

everyone gets their name in a hat and 500 or so are drawn and they are the politicians for ONE YEAR, no one can be selected twice so once you have had your turn you have to get a REAL JOB

really wanting to be a politician should automatically disqualify you tongue.gif
