Yeah i remember Nancy Polosi wanted her own private jet like Air Force One during the Bush Administration. Obama said he'll in the war period, i'm not saying he won't but one has to come to a realization if the surge doesn't do any good in the long run.
To answer your first question: It's not limited to this, but the government has three primary ways it can "make" money.
It can tax you. It can borrow it. It can print it.
Obama's problem on Afghanistan is that he and his allies portrayed it as the war we should have been fighting all along and that Iraq was an unneeded distraction from it. I personally believe it was a dishonest attempt to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to be able to completely rip Bush on Iraq, but without appearing weak on foreign policy. Democrats have been fighting that stereotype since Vietnam.
That said, as much as they wanted Bush to completely bomb in Iraq he doesn't now that he's in charge. It's different when they lead because if they bail and all goes to hell that defeat will be hung around their necks. Obama has a base that wants him out yesterday, but Obama doesn't want to be the one who lost the war either.
Speaking of that, anyone else find it ironic he picked Petreus? It was the right choice so I give Obama credit for making it, but it takes some gall to pick a general he and his party trashed as a liar and toady to pursue a strategy they said failed in Iraq back in 2007. Anyone remember General "Betray Us?" MoveOn has mysterious removed the add from its site. I respect Petreaus even more now because a lesser man could have easily told the President and his party to go to hell after what they did to him.
