I guess I can't comment on the parallel to DBZ since I never read the manga but even if Kishi is a fan of Toriyama it doesn't mean he would ollow the pattern of the series.
Hinata really has recognized Naruto from the start, but that doesn't make her the more likely choice.
Sure, Naruto stated, that he liked people like her but apart from that there was just to little development between them.
Apart from that I don't think Hinata should be put on a pedestal, like some NaruHina Fans like to do. She's got issues and pretty serious ones at that. Being shy and having low self esteem may look cute in the manga, but it really hampers your growth. Her teamleader herself admitted, that she used to be a quitter and pretty unreliable (During her fight in the Preliminaries). Just ignoring that would make her seem like a pretty doll and honestly Hinata is not as twodimensional as that.
Besides to me it would make more sense for her to grow for herself. Naruto may have inspired her fighting for recognition just like she wants to, but if she would just change for him wouldn't really help her get on with her life.
Let's see what the author has in store for her, but I really doubt that she will replace Sakura as Naruto's love-interest. They had their moments during the last arcs and if Kishi would want to shift focus he would need her to do some catching up (He's claiming if NaruHina had more screentime it would happen? But it doesn't have it atm

)...
And Naruto's reaction to Sakura's development (Naruto's smile during the second bell-test at her super-strength or his awe at the performance of her medical skills when she saved Kankurou) as well as his face when Sakura was about to feed him (He looked like a small boy at christmas

) made it pretty clear where his heart lies imo....
He, but if you really wanna shut him up, let him read Mizuras Essay
