I'm not trying to defend Kishimoto in any way, shape, or form. But if he made NS red herring, can't this whole Hinata/IT thing be a red herring as well?

No, especially when the "red herring" thing was just a lame excuse.
He may be a troll, but he's not brave enough to do this ! He always choses the easiest path which is: doing everything he's been told, and if these things are illogical or not explained, he would say "watch the movie/read the spin off" or "it was all a red herring", "everything has been decided a few years ago"....then laugh.

im sure if narusaku became canon there stil wouldn't be a need for a part 3 and even if they did force one, i can look you in the eye and tell you with a straight face kasumi/shinachiku wouldn't be the main character
