I wonder, have you been to China? When I was there nine years ago, people were selling Naruto headbands like hotcakes. You literally couldn't walk far into the markets without running into a stall with them.

 

When I went back a few years later, after the 2008 Olympics, almost all of it was gone. Which was extremely ironic, considering I had just entered the fandom at the time.

 

There have also been news reports of young girls who have been arrested for writing yaoi fanfiction. Sure, not every one is caught, but China is really a Big Brother nation.

It's not the pairing.  It's the fact that the main character was rendered a loser.  He lost.  We invested in the underdog and were rewarded with him failing to do anything.  We should have rooted for the self centered jackass who gets everything he wants handed to him on a silver platter.  

I think Kishimoto sympathized with the self centered jackass because he lost his whole clan and kitten. At least we know SS/NH arguments about Naruto's feelings being a mere crush were utter horsekitten thanks to the databook.

It's also a really big nation, with a population of about one billion and perhaps thousands of avenues to take to privately post pirated copies of Naruto raws. A bootlegged merchandise headband is not the same as manga-spoilers posted on the Internet; there are alleys of anonymity easily taken by expert users to avoid detection, and in a nation such as the People's Republic of China there is no doubt that they're taken to cut off connection between the original source of the raws to those who actually post them. For example, there is a sub-part of the Internet known as the "DarkNet", which contains nearly 95% more space and information-capability than the Internet we use. It's easy to access, easy to use (as long as you don't download anything, it being a nest for virus's and other horrific traps), and extremely easy to remain anonymous in. You can find the worst pornographic images in there, as well as avenues to obtain black-market weaponry and drugs, with absolutely no regulation by any source whatsoever. I have no doubt ways like the DarkNet are used to post manga raws now, without exposing the source to trouble.
