I will like to add that "narrative feint" was also used in Avatar. Remember when Aang kissed Katara the 2nd time during the fire nation play??? She didn't accepted him because of their current situation in the war. The fans thought she has fallen for Zuko because she has come to accept him especially when he helped her find the man who killed her mother. Then in the final episode during Zuko's fight with Azula it looked like she developed feelings for him. But that's not how it ended, she chose Aang.
To the Zutara fans it "looked" like Katara had feelings for him. To us Kataangers it was Katara being as caring as she was with everyone. I don't think a narrative feint was being used in this example because the creators of the show did not intend on having the scenes interpret the way Zutara fans saw it. But I get your point.
