After I watched the BBCAmerica broadcast of the announcement, I googled Capaldi since I've never seen him before (or, at least recognized him from Fires of Pompeii).  Man, he is one talented swearer....  I kinda want a Rated R for Language Doctor Who, now....

I'm hoping really hard that they'll be a cinema screening nearby. 

 

It's coming up. There's some toss up as to which new episode people are most looking forward to, the 50th, Adventures in Space and Time, or the Christmas special. Me, I'm about the 50th special but I'm also very interested in AiSaT. What about you guys?

There's a screening at a theatre 5 mins. away from me. Too bad it's not the Saturday it premieres, but I'm fine going on the Monday after.  

 

 

I favor that fan-made trailer more than the official one, too.

Does anyone know why the 50th anniversary simulcast isn't really on the 50th anniversary as originally stated to be in the US?

 

What the crap! I thought the point was that it was going to combine fans from around the world to celebrate on the day of the anniversary. Is it just that the original day the 23rd is all sold out?

I did watch Adventures of Space and Time. Heart breaking in the final 10 minutes. And a surprise at the end here as well. I teared hardcore.

Anyone else watch "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot" starring Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy? Hilarious! I love the Dalek bit. I'm gonna rewatch that right now.

 

Also, in the prequel minisode "Night of the Doctor", I'm sure many have beat me to the punch already but when he says "Will it hurt?" I was like "It'll John Hurt."

It doesn`t cheapen it one bit. As far as 9 and 10 were concered they murdered everyone on gallifrey since they had no memory of saving them. Only 11 rememberes.

The solution -- the gravity of their decisions and pain based off the timewar in NuWho series 1-4 become as weightless as a "It was all just a dream" ending. Yes, to them they think they did the deed, but they technically didn't. It's a dramatic irony that doesn't make their feelings false but makes us aware that they needn't feel that way at all. Also what the heck happens with the "End of Time" storyline? They're pulled from the time-lock in End of Time but if they were never in a time-lock? I mean, if the Zygons can break through from the other side, why can't Gallifrey?

...that the idea is that history was changed, after all, to preserve Gallifrey, so there WAS a time-locked Gallifrey during the "End of Time" storyline (because the War Doctor DID use the moment the first time -- which is why his memory couldn't be changed), but there isn't one now (or rather, there's a different, preserved Gallifrey locked in the painting) because they went with the new plan instead. Maybe. Time paradoxes always confuse me.

So, that timeline and this new one split into two separate timelines?

 

Went back and re-watched it and you're right, it is still time locked. It's in "stasis". But so were the Zygons, and again, they were able to get out of the painting.

I loved the 50th Anniversary special, and I really wish we could see more of John Hurt's Doctor!  He was fantastic.    The banter between the three Doctors was great.

Hurt's regeneration

I'm not sure on Hurt. I've seen some interpret him as not being a true regeneration of the Doctor because in "Night of the Doctor" he's a forced regeneration by the Karn. And so when his usefulness is up, he immediately regenerates into Eccleston's doctor. I didn't notice until the second watch that he started to look like Eccleston before they cut away. I did like the "I hope the ears are less conspicuous" comment.

 

From what we saw of Capaldi's Doctor (awesome moment!) he does seem to be a more severe one. Maybe he or someone else finds a way to split him into a darker version of himself. It is suggested that it is the amalgamation of the darker aspects of the Doctor, and not necessarily the Doctor himself.

Well, maybe we can dispose of spoiler tags this Saturday, since it will have been a week?  Unless, that is, several people here are actually waiting for the DVD before they see it?

 

Well, about The Hurt Doctor...

I saw it as a true regeneration because Eight was already dead, and he simply chose what sort of person he wanted his regeneration to be.  Time Lord regenerations are normally random, and the Sisters of Parn had refined it to such a degree that the dying Time Lord could choose what he/she wanted to be.  If Eight had left it up to random chance, then it's possible he would have simply regenerated into another Doctor who lacked the courage to intervene in the Time War.

 

So, he made the choice to regenerate into a Doctor who would end the Time War and save the universe.

 

In the end, Smith and Tennant's Doctors acknowledge Hurt as a true Doctor, and he regains his name and stands besides all the other Doctors.

 

You never know, Moffat or Big Finish might decide to make a spin-off series of audiobooks about the War Doctor, just like what happened with McGann's Eighth Doctor.

 

Yeah, the Doctor/Valeyard could possibly happen the way you describe.    It would be really interesting if Capaldi's Doctor had to face a darker version of himself.

 Still hoping this is part of his run, though.   

 

Which I know won't happen 'cause then kids won't be able to watch it..... XD
