It's probably a fragile object designed to conceal his face.... I doubt it protected him at all.

Kishi is a troll , Naruto attack went directly to Tobi's mask when he could hit him anywhere else. Kishi knows his fans are desperate to see his face so he is been teasing for a good while now.

Naruto was in Nine-Tailed Chakra Mode the same mode that allows him to shatter stone in a single punch so I assume that his headbutt had a similar increase in power if by nothing else the sheer speed at which he was moving.

My point is that the mask had to have been pretty strong or it would have at least cracked.

Hmm, true, forgot about that I suppose.
Doesn't take away from my point where it probably barely protected him, even if it was as tough as steel, it'd be just like slamming steel in his face. So it didn't matter where he attacked him.
