And that happens because of their own lack of knowledge. If they knew exactly what "tsundere" means and they would dig further into the eastern culture while keeping thri minds open to discussion, they would be more appreciated and Hinata wouldn't be hated as a character.
There are two ways to see a person perfect (or in this case, a character)
The first one would be to see it as an "ideal perfect" person. That's how Hinata perceives Naruto and, with all due respect, I feel like that's how fans also perceive Hinata. They don't see that her lack of self esteem is a flaw in her character and that she must accept herself as a good ninja/person before thinking of loving someone else. Her skill are unique and her determination in the fight against Neji was admirable, yes. However, fans perceive her as a "perfect" girl (and she is not) with the "perfect" crush (which is one sided) for the "perfect" person (Naruto is not perfect either). And what drives people to dislike both the character and the fans is this: nothing is that kind of perfect.
The second type is to accept the person's imperfections and see them as a person we can trust. This bond can only be established by getting to know a person for how they truly are, with their virtues and their flaws. Naruto shares this with Sakura and the manga gives us enough proof to confirm this. The missions they've shared together, the suffering they both had to endure as team 7 since losing Sasuke, and the events which have made them stay together while working on the goal of stopping threats... they have shared those moments together and they have built a friendship which can easily lead into them becoming a couple. Part of Naruto's determination to bring Sasuke back comes from his determination to make Sakura happy, and now we see that Sakura recognizes the fact that Naruto has a big task in his hand while protecting the world and thus, in her desire to protect him, she wants to assist him in the battlefield (chapter 573). Their view of each other is the real type of "perfection": Accepting the flaws, promoting the virtues, and encouraging each other to grow. I know that many NS fans perceive this and thus, in my opinion, I feel them more open to thoughts and ideas.
Now then, I know that there are still fans who simply reject any idea concerning NH and vice-versa. I don't discard the idea of any of them happening. After all, Kishi has the last word. However, from the development of each character and from what we've seen in the manga, I have to say that this is my reason as to why I'm a NaruSaku fan: Care, Reaponsibility, Respect, Knowledge, Trust, Love.... Evidence.
Hinata is not a bad character. I admire the fact that she still struggles to improve on her self-esteem (even if chapter 573 threw me off a bit). But despite this, I don't see her as Naruto's girlfriend.
