I care not about work, if midnight is the earliest screening of this, I will be there! I've never understood how they came up with the onomatopoeia for his roar in the comics. "Skreonk" ... There's no hissing or "s" anywhere to be found in it. 

 

Bought and read the prequel comic "Awakening". Maybe spoilers? -- Basically he's Gamera from the 1990's Gamera trilogy, without the mystical element and the MUTO are the Gyaos (which... given the design of one of them, Duh?)

Saw it, talk about delayed gratification, but totally worth it.  He's still proving why he's the King, no, God of all Monsters.

For me whenever I see Godzilla I'm reminded of the old Chewit adverts here in the UK.

 

 

I'm pretty sure they stole the idea from Godzilla to make the ads but I can't help making the comparison,  specially with the new one, he looks like he ate too many sweets as well.

I'd definitely put it up there with some of the better made Godzilla films, and it definitely wiped my memory clean of that disgrace of a 1998 film.

Unfortunately Godzilla didn't do anything of the sort, but he did pull off a badass move that made the audience cheer. ;)

Sweet! I'd def like a different director though. I like Edward's respect for Godzilla and his cinematography for the monster stuff, but I want someone who can make a more epic movie.

 

I saw the movie again, and this time made quick notes after and wanted to get your thoughts too.

 

Spoilers ahead in all of them.

 

Bad vision

Do people not have good vision in this world?

 

There's a couple times in the movie where the monsters should clearly be visible to the people, and for some reason they need extra help seeing them. Here's the ones I remember:

 

example 1: When Godzilla's platelets break the surface and is heading towards Hawaii. Serizawa is standing on the deck of the battleship and is using binoculars to view this event and suddenly Godzilla is about to crash into the ship. If he's that close does it really constitute binoculars?... He blind?

 

example 2: The MUTO is eating nuclear material from the beached Russian sub. Soldiers walk up to this sub and do not notice it. Yes, I realize it's on the other side of the ship, but they didn't notice the ship or the crunching sound the creature was making as it ate?

 

music again

The music... why is Desplat using descending xylophones so much? It sounds like it's raining the whole time... it doesn't make sense. The music is the part I hate the most about this movie. Thoughts?

 

train issues

Why did the bullet train continue towards the MUTO at the airport when clearly there's a MUTO at the airport? The steam-engine later on stops just moments after it notices an attack on the other side of a hill.

 

people problems

There really isn't a point to the human story, which is odd, since it comprises 80% of the movie. There's no real character to connect with. They seem to simply serve as a person who moves from point A to point B.

 

Why is Serizawa a jerk? While I realize helicopters move quicker than cars can, and that naval infirmaries are comparable to hospital rooms, he asks them to take Joe and Ford Brody. Joe is on the cusp of death, and Serizawa asks them to take him anyways as he's being loaded onto an ambulance, which I'm betting is better equipped to save his life than a ride-along chopper. He does this just to find out that the MUTO has been sending out calls.

 

That's the other thing, how is it that the only person who has a record of these calls going out between the two MUTOs, Joe? They uses seismographs, right? So why did no one else get a reading? Japan has earthquakes so... someone else must have this equipment.

Why is Godzilla fat? I mean, I'd understand if he had muscular thunder thighs to allow him to swim at the deepest parts of the ocean but... shouldn't he be leaner for this reason? I feel like they got wind that one of the complaints of the first american Godzilla movie being he was too skinny, and decided to go way overboard in the other direction. Like seriously... I know they talked to zoologists about how his body would function should he be a real live animal (which according to the law of squares if he were real  and his bones weren't made of sterner stuff than the bones that currently exist, his body would basically explode from it's inability to support his mass as he moved). So I'm curious as to the reasoning behind his girth.

They explain that he's called Gojira, but never ever ever explain why he's called Godzilla suddenly. Like, it's like just skirted... Even Serizawa switches back and forth between the two, and he's the expert. Why not just have Serizawa call him Godzilla right away and leave it at that for the whole movie? Seriously... audience members not familiar with the origins of his name, might have been confused or even thought Watanabe just pronounced it wrong a bunch of times.

If the MUTOs feed on nuclear energy, and the female only needed nuclear energy to reproduce and not the male's seed (what's the point of the male of the species?) why the hell didn't she stay in Nevada, where she was housed, where there was tons and tons of radioactive waste?

 

armed and dumb

Man... the armed forces in this film is just plain... dumb. I just can't get over it. I mean seriously. I mean they kind of have to be to a certain level for these movies to work, but there have been a couple movies now where I've seen the armed forces just make super newb mistakes. While this isn't an endorsement for the armed forces, I think anyone would agree that there is a method to the madness and that they are a better oiled machine than the confused doll-eyed people in this movie and others like Man of Steel seem to be. 

 

 

Also, why did they not evacuate the western shores until it was too late? They could've said it was because of a tsunami, or you know... the monster that's currently already being reported on that's making it's way west?

 

Also, how do you feel about the screen time and the first "battle?"

 

thoughts on the kaiju time

I'm torn. Although that first battle should've been a battle, I understand him teasing the fight until the end, when Godzilla can be his true badass form. And in a way, the awe the people in the film build for how fearsome he can be, is a great way to make us look forward even more to each time he actually appears. Kind of like Jaws which I believe was hinted as an influence on the film -- definitely with the name "Brody" in the film.

Godzilla is the translation of Gojira, there really wasn't a scene needed for that transition to take place. You can just assume the English name stuck.

 

The female needed the male to reproduce there's was no statement saying she didn't need him we also don't know much about these creatures or how they're habitats work, there are some species of insects and lizard where the females are asexual and the males are...well...just along for the ride

 

The armed forces didn't have time to evacuate, the minute it was announced Godzilla was on his way he was literally stompin around shores.

 

Godzilla isn't fat, all of that is muscle and bulk and that's how he's always looked....his design was based closely on the Heisei Godzilla which is the definitive Godzilla

 

The train was automatic

 

Godzilla rose up from the depths right in front of him, Serizawa likely saw the waves rising and thought he was far away, he also wanted to take close look at Godzilla since nobody has seen him in 60 years

 

There was no indication that the Muto was eating before people saw it after all as soon as they spot it we see it digging in so its actually very likely that they just caught his hand in the cookie jar.

It only had a budget of $160 million, so it's likely it will be even on its budget since it's already passed $90 million. The question is will it make double that amount. Movie studios usually like to see nearly double the budget, since some expenses, like advertising, aren't included in the original budget.

 

If the movie is successful it's likely that they will keep Edwards on board, same way they did with Nolan and Batman, Raimi with Spider-Man, etc. Apparently, Edwards would use the same restraint with showing the monster if he did make a sequel.

 

In you're other post you mention that there's no point to the human characters. There actually is a point. The reason for the characters is just simply to have a character you know placed in a situation. For example, probably the only reason the main character had a son was to have that son be put on a bus on the Golden Gate Bridge. Why did he not tell his wife to get out of the city as soon as possible? So she would be there when Godzilla showed up.

 

Anyways. I thought the movie was alright. If found the human elements to be really lacking. Aaron Taylor-Johnson just didn't have much energy in his performance which led to his character being a bit dull. I enjoyed the monster battles, the special effects were fantastic and very detailed. Plus I loved the atomic breath.

 

I think my biggest issue is the lack of Godzilla in the movie, but not just in terms of screen time. I understand the teasing part and I see many comparisons with Jaws. But with Jaws, the shark was the main problem, the shark is what everyone was reacting to. The shark was the focus. In Godzilla, the focal point really isn't on Godzilla, it's on the MUTOs. Godzilla doesn't initiate the plot, he and all of the other characters are simply reacting to the MUTOs, the MUTOs are actually the center of what kicks off the plot.
