She needs a verbal rejection, so the message is clear to her. (and us.) I want him to answer her confession, he can't just leave it uncompleted. NH needs closure before NS becomes canon. Even if she is a side character, I want this story to be complete, with no holes.
You know, I don't think Naruto will speak to her about it, nor do i think that he will have to give her a verbal rejection.
I think Kishimoto is going to do something for Hinata that wraps up her storyline nicely. He will somehow shift her focus from Naruto onto whatever is meant for her (be it heading up her clan, catching the eye of another hyuuga or both), and then let her fulfill that goal. Then she will let go of her crush on Naruto naturally without either of them having to address it.
'Cuz I'm tellin' ya right now - Naruto ain't never gonna address it! lol!
The path has been cleared for Hinata to take over the clan, now that Neji is dead. There is no one else. Now all she needs is some other love interest....
And yeah, I fully think that Kishimoto will spend that extra time on her. She may have been a side character, but her importance has just been bumped up. We know her wants and desires. She has gained more fans. Kishimoto now has an obligation to write an ending to her story.
And no, I never thought Hinata gave up. Even after Sakura's hug. Hinata's crush on Naruto has been shown to be long lasting. Her love for him has only grown as Hinata has gained more self-confidence.
And here's the tricky part: What she likes about Naruto's nindo is that he never gives up. But to move on from Naruto and love someone else would mean she would have to go back on that nindo. What would make her do that, and still look like a strong character? I don't know....
Kishimoto has written in double standard here. Naruto's love for Sakura is deep and abiding. And for him to succeed would support his nindo of never giving up. But the same applies to Hinata. So in NS's case the nindo works, but for that to work, then Hinata cannot succeed in her love for Naruto.
I think Kishimoto will have to fill out her storyline to remedy this and make everyone feel okay about this doublestandard — yes, she's leaving behind her love for Naruto, but she's moving on to something she didn't realize she wanted more.
Before 615 I could have believed that Kishimoto might have let Hinata fade away. But not now. He's written waaaay more into her storyline than almost anyone else. And he'll have to attend to that in the end. (And we've yet to see other people's reactions to their closeness on the battlefield. Regardless of whether he gave chakra to others, they still shared an intimate moment that restarted his engines.) The waves from Hinata's public actions will still be felt in the bigger plot, even when Hinata is not around. Sakura's astonished look is proof of that.
I'm just hoping that this moment with Hinata is a gateway to more focus on Sakura. *fingers crossed*
