Yes. Do not start Tokyo Ghoul:re. You'll be confused as hell. You have to start from chapter 1 of Tokyo Ghoul 
Season 1 left out some important info pertaining to the nature of ghouls, so that's why. And season 2... let's not even start with that horrid abomination, lol.

Uhh... First of all, it didn't follow the manga. Second, instead of being an "original" anime, it was more of a butchered representation of post-Aogiri in reversed order here and there (with a few major changes). Third... Kaneki is barely the main character of season 2 :/

It lacks continuity, Kaneki is a mute and barely shows up, rushed, and missing/random inputs that don't flow (like why would Kaneki just randomly shows up to ask a story that I won't spoil for you). I watched both seasons, but didn't know before few months when trang95 told me that season two is missing a lot of important things. So, I will read the manga to see what happens and stick with it, at least when I begin reading it.
