Yeah, poor Megumi XD In the middle of everything.
Alumni <3 I love their relationships and friendships to hold on even after a decade is really beautiful.
Sorina... one day... *sigh* I haven't felt so confident about a ship becoming cannon and live happily ever after since NaruSaku (TouKen doesn't count; can't shake of the feeling that something bad will happen).

Yeah, she's awesome. What chapter are you on? At the beginning she seems to be an elite, narrowminded, stuck up prodigy, but layers and layers of other sides of hers are slowly show to us. Yearns for love and friendship, can't let out her emotions unlike her cousin, Shojo lover but has zero idea where to get mangas, Tsundere, etc.I love Erina XD

I'm on chapter 38. She's hilarious to me. She gets so flustered around Soma.

You know I never considered the possability of Erina's father knowing Jouichiro or having a history with him, heck I didn't even expect him to be introduced in a story driven role at all. I'd always thought if there was a link it would be through Erina and Souma's mothers, I have no idea why I'd just assumed that the two mothers were linked through friendship or something. Also assumed the Nakira name was inherited through her mother as well, though that could still be the case, Erina's hair does seem similar to her grandfathers in a more feminine way.
Then again we are all assuming he's a scary person, but so is the grandfather at first glance which isn't the case at all, for all we know he could be a clumsy fool who is a Baka-Otou, and Erina's fear of him stems from him being over protective and giving her no room to do anything.
Edit: That could be a running gag, like Alice and her mother, first introduced like elegant ladies but both are very childish. Erina is a proper Ojou but in reality she very girly who has a fun side to her.
Now that I think about it, you're probably right. Such a shame.
What other cooking mangas have that?
Oh plenty, you young'un. Especially if you live in a country with the biggest manga market in the region. First off, a manga released a couple decades ago named "Mister Ajikko" which Soma is entirely lifted from. Another one is "Chuuka Ichiban!" (Cooking Master Boy) which had an "underworld" plot. I'm not surprised you guys don't know anything about them since these are really obscure.
If you guys want a really good cooking manga, I would highly recommend the Bambino! Series (it has a sequel manga too) and Nobunaga no Chef. (Note that both of them are seinen, and it's the reason why I consider it what cooking manga should be all about)

I've only read one cooking manga before that, but that was yrs ago and was a shoujo manga. Out the mangas you've mentioned, I've only heard of Cooking Master Boy so far, and I'm planning to check it out one day.

Soma always manages to make her loose her cool XD The thing that sucks is that she gets pushed back a lot (though understandable since it's the autumn election arc). Megumi comparatively has a lot more screentime.I'm on chapter 38. She's hilarious to me. She gets so flustered around Soma.
We're all pretty big fans of her in here >_<

That said that's your opinion. I would argue that "you lost me with the dislike of the series" or "give the vibe of 'what's so great about this'" but I am not like that, so I only take your advice and nothing else. At the very least, the other one sounds interesting. I would say this: this series is now getting popular. While I am happy, the hate/"tsk" will increase drastically, which is upsetting but what can you do. I noticed MAL is taking great interest of the series, so it's only matter of time. Now, Japan is finally pushing no it hard as the sales greatly expanded, which is great, but of course, the hate will now rise.
All I know is I like the series before it was cool.

Looks like Rindou-senpai could become a fan favourite, her kinda krazy looks, red hair and golden eyes, with the gluttonous behaviour, could her the really popular with the fans. plus she has fangs....So Erina's father looks like a vampire and so does Rendou-sempai...this is still a cooking manga right?

Cooking Master Boy has a very far behind scanlation team. Finding the volumes outside Indonesia (my country) would be like finding a needle in a field of haystacks. The local publisher here hasn't reprinted it either, your best bet to find it here would be to scour message boards. Mister Ajikko or also localized as "Born to Cook" here had a short run in local channels here. Its sequel manga has also been released here a couple of years ago. For the latter, there's a team scanlating it, but only the first manga which was originally released in the eighties. You can check out the early chapters at mangafox and you'll notice that Soma's character is not entirely original.
I remember reading Bambino. I thought it was ok, though to be fair, I haven't finished it. I wasn't even aware of the sequel. Looking back, it's making me remember. The good and the bad. Perhaps I will reread everything and see how it is.
That said that's your opinion. I would argue that "you lost me with the dislike of the series" or "give the vibe of 'what's so great about this'" but I am not like that, so I only take your advice and nothing else. I'm not quite getting what you're saying, but I will say this: if you want a manga that truly delves into the heart of what cooking and being a chef means, both of those seinen series are the ones that truly delivers. Bambino's MC is not a genius. He's horribly flawed. But he grows throughout the series. Throughout the manga's run, he learns from others what cooking and being a chef means. For Nobunaga's chef, the MC cooks by considering his clients and each of his dishes is detailed to convey his thoughts to the historical figures in the manga.
They're not amazing, but if we want to seek a manga that helps us understand what being a chef is all about, they have it all covered.
To be honest, the only reason why this manga is becoming popular is because the current readership has never heard of the mangas I mentioned. Soma is the only cooking manga in the "shonen" category as well as a Jump manga hence being more accessible than most cooking manga around.
Yakitate! is more well-known for those in their 20's even. Heck, if you asked me to choose, I'd still pick Yakitate! Soma has fantastic art, but that's it. There's no personal touch from the creators for it. There's no personal spin to it. I admit, I'm coming across like a basher, but even so, when you compare past cooking mangas, Soma doesn't have anything that makes it stand out on its own.
Yakitate! Had the endless hurricane of puns and hilarious reactions,
Mister Ajikko had the "Tsubasa" of cooking.
Bambino! has a realistic behind-the-scenes look at the world of cooking
Nobunaga's chef has this time-traveler cooking for historical figures and putting his thoughts and opinions into each of his dishes.
Cooking Master Boy has this underworld plot of a nefarious organization plotting to take over a country.
And... Where does that leave this series???
Trust me, I enjoy the food porn as much as you guys do, but.... That's it. None of the characters really interest me.
Hopefully, this next arc helps the series stand on its own foot. If Erina's dad is an underworld kingpin of sorts, I'd like to see Soma & co. get into cooking matches Cutthroat-Kitchen style. Think about it, underworld cooking means anything goes. So sabotages would be perfectly allowed in their matches. It'd give the series its own refreshing spin that it needs.
Well, that was a long ramble.... Sorry about that.
The family that couldn't be.

I guess one part of it is that it has something that is hard to describe. I'm not saying you're missing out or you don't get it, but it just seem like it hits the right target. I remember that series, Yakitate. I thought it was good, anime wise. Manga, well, I remember thinking, "That's odd..." But you know, I don't want to go further because in the end, it's all opinion. Like with Fairy Tail, I thought it's decent, albeit overrated, but it is decent. I'm not wrong, but you're not wrong. Basically, I just defended this series because no one has to, but even then, I don't even go all out.
The only pet peeve of mine is comparison. If you like the other series over this one, that's fine. It's just that it always come across as "That series is popular! Screw that one! Go for this!" In other words, hate justified by the exposure. Yes, you explained your part, but the comparison is hardly needed. I can like another basketball series, but to me, nothing will top Slam Dunk. I can still like other though.
If it doesn't have your liking, that's fine. Just remember that we here have reasons to like it or even if some of us read others, we have reasons to like it more.

I understand about exposure, but what's done is done. I already said that I like it before it was cool, meaning I was not part of a bandwagon that people wants to like it just because. Oddly enough, I am not into that "food porn," rather something else. I don't need to explain myself. In fact, I was recommended by my girlfriend of all people, especially it is ecchi. I even asked why, with everything on the line, but she just told me it fascinates her. Granted, I thought "maybe it has female fan service," though after getting hit, it wasn't the case more or less.

Fully agree on most of your points.
I brought up the comparisons because I believed it is worth noticing that the series has yet to mature fully into its own character. After over a 100 chapters, it is taking an awfully long time to do so, which is why I'm hoping that Papa Nakiri's introduction gives the series what it's been lacking. Otherwise, this manga will be very easy to forget.

To me, it holds up pretty well for something this long, let alone to attract many people now. It can change for better or worse in the future, but for now, for those who likes it, it's a good thing. For those who has trouble with it and hope for something, it looks promising. I don't think the series is forgettable at all. If it was, it should not have this amount of attention from fans and media. WSJ wouldn't push this series strong if it was not worth mentioning.
It's only matter of time if this series will be remembered for its excellence or its disappointment.
